Tom Segura: Completely Normal – The First 48

The Tragedy of Stoner Comedy

Fourteen states have effectively decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, and on June 4 Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Police Department announced plans to follow suit in NYC. As marijuana goes mainstream, its media portrayal has likewise softened. In the film, marijuana transforms seemingly normal, upstanding American youth into maniacs similar to the opium fiends of earlier stereotypes. Drugs were everywhere: on the strip, where people dropped microtabs of acid and then painted themselves blue; in middle schools, where young pushers did the work of the Fagin-esque masterminds of the marijuana trade; and in middle-class homes, where the sharing of one joint led a young Don and Betty Draper-esque couple to neglect its newborn in a bathtub with a running faucet, where the tot ineluctably drowned. Their straggly long hair, stoner talk, and constant fiending for the demon weed established the stereotype that prevails, in various permutations, to this day.

As happens when actors embrace caricature roles, both were typecast to such a degree that the stoner aesthetic took over their careers. Of late, the stoner comedy has become more realistic. The movie blended stoner stereotypes and broad humor with blood, gore, and violence. More than likely, the stoner comedies of the future will continue to play up the humor while conveniently overlooking the tragedy at the heart of American marijuana prohibition. Jails, especially in the South, have many occupants who are there simply for possession of marijuana.

Whatever the case, there will be no stoner comedy that deals with the harm inflicted on a family when an adult male breadwinner is sent to state prison for what is essentially a victimless crime. Marijuana prohibition has been the gateway to an exponential expansion of the prison-industrial complex, but that’s a reality silver-screen fantasies will not touch. As with romantic comedies, which give us a skewed view of love, the stoner genre is riddled with distortions and misrepresentations-a bad trip worthy of the worst directors in Hollywood.

Interview: Elizabeth Ho talks Netflix’s cannabis comedy ‘Disjointed’

Currently starring in the Netflix Cannabis Comedy ‘Disjointed’, Elizabeth talks marijuana and working with Kathy BatesInterview by Adam Crookes. When I was first attending USC, my main goal was to just get myself to Los Angeles; I was using the university as an excuse to move down there. The plan I’d hatched in my brain was to pursue an acting career, strike it famous in a year, and leave Uni.Since fame did not immediately find me during my freshman year, I found myself at a loss and really facing reality for the first time in my life. I’d always been successful in achieving my goals, and I realized this Hollywood nut was on a whole new level of figuring out how to crack. I felt like I was living a double life: trying to balance the wishes of my family to be a business major while also trying to pursue my own creative ambitions.

I hadn’t anticipated actually sticking with being a business major. I ended up taking a year off in between my freshman and sophomore year because I was so unhappy. Auditioning never fails to be a nerve-wracking process, even for those actors who’ve been doing it for their entire lives! Lucky for me, the material was fun and engaging. Working with Kathy Bates is a dream come true for me, and yes, I’m a huge fan of her work!

This woman is a legend and rightfully so. I am beyond lucky to work with her on a daily basis. She taught us how that works: from the day-to-day store activities, to how the plants needed to look during each stage of their growth. You can catch Elizabeth Ho on ‘Disjointed’ on NETFLIX..

Ngaio Bealum praised, but reviews criticize Netflix weed-cooking show

The latest Sacramento-area figure to bring his talents and expert opinion to a national audience is comedian and local columnist Ngaio Bealum. A week later, several reviews are in, and many of them are lukewarm on the execution of what was a mostly promising premise: Chefs competing head-to-head to see who can create the best edibles. The first season of the series contains 12 episodes, none longer than 15 minutes. Bealum, who performs marijuana-inspired comedy routines in Sacramento and the Bay Area and also writes a column for the Sacramento News and Review, serves as the program’s culinary weed expert. The show’s main host is YouTube personality Josh Levya.

A glance at more in-depth write-ups by many national news outlets turns up mostly negative reviews, with a few common criticisms. Here’s a quick, THC-free taste of what some reviewers have said about Netflix’s first weed-based cooking show and Bealum’s role as a panel expert. Shapiro charged that the show lacked appeal to the average viewer, and that it does a poor job of explaining things like the differences between cannabis strains or the creation of weed oil. In her view, Bealum and the gang use too much jargon that only stoners or those in the weed industry will understand. Astre agrees that the stakes are pretty low – there are no cash prizes – but she also sees little harm done by the show, as much as it may be lacking in its execution of the concept.

70’s Comedy Record about Marijuana

Where Are They Now?

The comedy wonder spent a lot of time as a boy riding his bicycle back and forth in his neighborhood along El Prado Boulevard near Manhattan Avenue. His dad owned a skating rink on North Armenia Avenue just north of Osborne and that’s where he spent lots of his time early on. Comedian Gallagher as he appeared in the 1964Plant High SchoolYearbook…. He graduated from Plant High School in 1964 and pursued a degree in chemical engineering at the University of South Florida. Dozens of companies turned him down for employment, including The Tampa Tribune despite a good word on his behalf from Zappone with the personnel people.

Stauffer Chemical Company finally put him to work but a series of tasteless jokes coupled with his keener interest in show business earned him a pink slip. In the 80’s, he used his own money to videotape a dozen one-hour comedy programs he sold to HBO, The Comedy Channel, and home video distributors. He now lives in Palm Beach with his wife but returns to Tampa often to share watermelon with family members who still live in the area. I never used my own money for my Showtime specials and I was never on HBO. I worked for Florida Nitrogen later Kaiser Agricultural Chemicals as their chief chemist when Jan C.

Uterwick left to run his dad’s worldwide shipping company in downtown Tampa. My guidance councellor who later worked as an executive for Tampa Electric helped mediate the situation before graduation night. I worked for the coach who I visit with each time I return to town. I worked as a chemist until I graduated not after, then I went to Los Angeles where I was hired by Allied Chemical to work as a salesmen out of Chicago. Jim Stafford let me get up late at night in clubs where he worked like the Elbow Room on Longboat Key to practice it.

State issues first marijuana license, steady flow predicted

BOSTON – State regulators voted unanimously Thursday to grant the state’s first recreational marijuana business license to a marijuana grower in Milford. The license approved by the Cannabis Control Commission on Thursday will allow Sira Naturals to grow between 10,001 and 20,000 square feet of marijuana at their indoor facility at 13 Commercial Way in Milford. Sira Naturals already grows marijuana for medical patients at its Milford cultivation facility and operates medical dispensaries in Cambridge, Somerville and Needham. The company grows more than 60 strains of marijuana and turns it into cookies, caramels and other edibles. The CCC has had the authority to issue business licenses to marijuana companies since June 1 and expects that retail sales will begin on or around July 1, even though the regulators have not yet licensed any retail shops.

CCC Chairman Steven Hoffman said Thursday that the CCC expects to consider license applications at its meetings for the foreseeable future. CCC Executive Director Shawn Collins said Sira Naturals plans to be fully operational within four months of being licensed, though he noted that the company is already growing marijuana for medical use and has the ability to transfer some of that product to the adult use market. The provisional license is conditional upon a fingerprint-based check of state and federal criminal databases, payment of the $5,000 annual license fee, a certification that the company is in compliance with the Department of Public Health’s regulations for medical marijuana, and other conditions. Sira Naturals submitted its application to the CCC before any other companies, on April 18, and the CCC received word from Milford June 8 that the company is following all local zoning ordinances and town bylaws, Collins said.

George Carlin’s Last Words

The Irish Catholic kid from Corpus Christi parish in Harlem-with barely more than a year of high school education-combined his own fierce and fearlessly questioning mind with the lessons he’d learned on the streets of New York to craft comedy that made audiences laugh and challenged them to think. I think it’s great that you had that reaction, because that’s really what we set out to do. So I think that was both an explosive and a very determining factor. I think his legacy is going to be that he’s every bit as popular and long-lasting as Mark Twain, and I think his work is just as voluminous in its medium, and if anything, stronger. It’s not at all the image you take of Fellini; you think he was this left-wing, French nouveau, kind of – but not at all.

George worked for the side that paid him the most, I think, but that was self-selecting, because the kind of message he grew into was not going to be any more comfortable in Las Vegas than it would be on The National Review’s annual cruise. Partly I think that’s just respect, but it’s partly that he just taught people so many things. George’s fans are hugely loyal I think, over and above other comedians, because he went and met them and performed for them live. I certainly don’t think anyone but Richie Pryor, or possibly Lily Tomlin – though she had a more comedic career rather than a comedy career, I do think that she blazed a trail that was very important, and she was an exact contemporary of Richard and George. I don’t think anyone comes close to Carlin in terms of serious intent, including Richard, actually.

He called them the plateau, and I think that’s correct. I don’t think he went very far up after the 90s, even in the early 90s. I mean, he thought that Jamming in New York was the best special he’d ever done.

Watch John Oliver Blaze Through the Problems with Marijuana Legalization :: Comedy :: Video :: John Oliver :: Paste

The issue of marijuana is like Mark Wahlberg being seen as a serious actor. That’s part of the central thesis of John Oliver’s latest piece on marijuana legalization; it’s something we’ve all grown to accept, but is still fraught with problems. In the case of Wahlberg, it’s films such as Transformers. For legalization, it’s a matter of new state laws about weed use being in serious conflict with existing federal laws about everything from shipping to paying employees of legal dispensaries, to individuals with disabilities being able to use marijuana. Many of those federal laws are decades old and were less strictly enforced under President Obama’s tenure.

Maine House overturns governor’s veto of marijuana bill

The Maine House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Wednesday to override Gov. Paul LePage’s veto of a measure to allow the commercial sale of marijuana in the state. The House overrode the veto with a 109-39 vote, according to The Portland Press Herald. The bill now heads to the state Senate, where lawmakers must vote by a two-thirds margin to overturn LePage’s veto. The newspaper previously reported that senators believe they have the support to overturn a veto.

The measure was crafted by a special legislative committee, and previously passed the House and Senate by wide margins. LePage vetoed the measure arguing that it would violate federal law. Nine states, including Maine, and the District of Columbia have moved to legalize recreational marijuana use, but the substance remains federally prohibited. Although possession of recreational marijuana has been legal in Maine since 2016, there has been no process to legally sell it in the state. The post Maine House overturns governor’s veto of marijuana bill appeared first on Cannabis Business Executive – Cannabis and Marijuana industry news.

Leftists Now Say Term ‘Marijuana’ Racist » Alex Jones’ Infowars: There’s a war on for your mind!

Leftists have set their sights on the latest problematic word in their feverish attempt to rewrite language. The word marijuana is now racist and has been expunged from the Newspeak dictionary. The article goes on to state that despite legalization, high arrests continue to be made in certain areas due to obvious racism. Of course the simple explanation is that more police officers are patrolling black neighborhoods due to high violent crime rates, meaning marijuana users are more likely to be caught in those areas. While no one denies the obvious over-the-top narrative pushed by the government during the reefer-madness era, the notion that marijuana arrests are solely the result of racism is disproven by the facts.

Twitter users were quick to criticize the story for what they felt was yet another non-issue. You damage your credibility and alienate your readers. Alexhalperin What ever you have been smoking to convince you that this was even remotely a good article, I want some. Quite possibly the stupidest thing I’ve read all day.

About a week and a half ago, the server which listology lived on suffered a catastrophic failure. Through a perfect storm of circumstances far too lengthy and tedious to explain, I found myself without an easy backup from which to restore, and my hosting provider found themselves unable to restore my site from the weekly server images that they store every week. They continue to work on that problem, however at this point I don’t have an enormous amount of confidence in their ability to succeed, and I have started to explore other options. I do have a copy of the raw database files that Listology ran on, and I am going to attempt to get these up and running. This could serve to be time consuming, and at the same time I am also hunting for a new hosting provider.

In the meantime, know that I have all your data and lists, and that one way or another we will get them back online. I do not have a timeline, and my work and personal lives are extremely busy right now. And Listology will return as soon as it can.

The Best Comedy Duos on TV Right Now – Flavorwire

After three months of cruel hiatus, Greendale reopens its doors to the best study group in the history of television. There are a lot of things we’ve missed since Dan Harmon, et al, took the piss out of Glee in a typically wonderful Christmas special: Jeff’s arrogance, Dean Pelton’s randomness, Britta’s, well, britta-ing everything she touches. Perhaps what we’ve longed for most is the heartwarmingly dorky, ridiculously culturally literate friendship between Danny Pudi’s Abed and Donald Glover’s Troy. We’re so inspired by the pair that we’ve rounded up the ten greatest comedy duos on TV right now. Let us know who you’d add to the list in the comments.

Why Jeff Sessions Hates Marijuana

More marijuana education

From growing the perfect crop to marketing within restrictive rules, Canadian colleges and universities are cultivating courses for those wanting to work in the booming marijuana industry. Kwantlen Polytechnic University started offering online courses in cannabis production, marketing and financing about three years ago after officials at the British Columbia school realized there was a need for training and education around medicinal marijuana, said David Purcell, the university’s director of emerging business. About 1,200 people have taken the classes, most of whom are between 25 and 40 years old and were working full-time in another industry, he said. The university isn’t alone in offering marijuana-related courses. Niagara College is working on a certificate in marijuana production and the New Brunswick Community College is already teaching cultivation.

There’s been a void in the educational marketplace when it comes to training specifically for the burgeoning marijuana market, said Debbie Johnston, dean of the school of continuing education at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont. Durham College recently began offering a two-day course that provides an introduction to all things marijuana. Marijuana companies are looking for professionals, like accountants or business managers, who have industry-specific knowledge, from the terminology and history of the industry to the regulatory framework and basics of cannabis plants, Johnston added. Alison McMahon runs Cannabis at Work, a recruiting agency for marijuana companies, and said completing cannabis courses can help candidates stand out from the crowd. There aren’t a lot of job seekers with cannabis education on their resumes, McMahon noted, but that’s likely to change as both the industry and educational offerings grow.

Kwantlen and Durham College are both planning to expand the variety of marijuana classes on offer. A course teaching responsible retail sales, safe handling and strain identification will soon be offered through Kwantlen, and the school is also working on a cultivation course that will see students go out and work with cannabis plants at licensed production facilities, Purcell said.

marshydro LED grow light, grow tent,Hydroponic,Grow light

For over 9 years led grow light manufacture experience, we have provided a lot OEM service to different brands, worked with a lot indoor growers, universities, specialist growers, commercial growers and research labs. Today, we have got enough experience on LED grow light, so we decided to make our own products, own brand-Marshydro to provide service to different growers directly. We have saw a lot low quality LED grow lights are using unknown LEDs or Epistar LEDs and got very high failure in short time, LEDs burnt out or lenses got melt very fast. It is really embarrassing to ask warranty during grow. We decided to make a safe, high quality, low heat, low power consumption, high penetration, high yield , high power, truly full-spectrum LED grow light, so our first series LED grow light –Mars hydro led grow light series is comprised of the two top brand LEDs,CREE and OSRAM.We are different from other brands also, they prefer using double or triple lenses to increase lumens, PAR, PPF or PPFD at one point to tell a lie, while we avoid using lens to increase the output of our LED grow light and truly increase the lumens , PAR ,PPF and PPFD in the coverage area.

We want to make things simple and lower the failure of Mars hydro led grow light series, we did not build unnecessary complex remote control program in , we only put two modes–veg&bloom on the light for flexible use. We are on the boat of growers, so we are thinking what growers are thinking. Led grow light is a product built with our confidence, experience and growers expectation. With Mars hydro series, We considered five factors: fabric quality, reflective rate, pole quality, lighting leaking and flexible use, especially the light leaking, we gathered a lot information from growers and competitors and we know how important to avoid light leaking. We do not want your plants can not sleep well and the grow tent drop down to damage your plants.

For your health, we will never and ever use any bad smell and toxic fabric to make our grow tents. Mars Hydro is a new brand but we are not newer in indoor growing , we are professional on business, service ,products, growing, etc.

Studies Link Legal Marijuana With Fewer Opioid Prescriptions « CBS Dallas / Fort Worth

Pot can relieve chronic pain in adults, so advocates for liberalizing marijuana laws have proposed it as a lower-risk alternative to opioids. Some research suggests marijuana may encourage opioid use, and so might make the epidemic worse. The new studies don’t directly assess the effect of legalizing marijuana on opioid addiction and overdose deaths. Over-prescribing is considered a key factor in the opioid epidemic. One looked at trends in opioid prescribing under Medicaid, which covers low-income adults, between 2011 and 2016.

Results showed that laws that let people use marijuana to treat specific medical conditions were associated with about a 6 percent lower rate of opioid prescribing for pain. That suggest the medical marijuana laws didn’t reach some people who could benefit from using marijuana instead of opioids, said Hefei Wen of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, one of the study authors. Every year from 2010 through 2015, researchers compared states with a medical marijuana law in effect to those without one. Researchers found that Medicare patients in states with marijuana dispensaries filled prescriptions for about 14 percent fewer daily doses of opioids than those in other states. W.

David Bradford, an economist at the University of Georgia in Athens who’s an author of the second study, said the results add to other findings that suggest to experts that marijuana is a viable alternative to opioids. For one thing, they don’t reveal whether individual patients actually reduced or avoided using opioids because of the increased access to marijuana. They called for states and the federal government to pay for more studies to clarify the effect of marijuana use on opioid use, saying such research is needed for science to guide policy-making.

I’m not against Medical Marijuana and the people who need it formedical purposes, but I’m not all for it. I’m especially not for having close to 1,100 dispensaries in the city. While living in New York City, Man Ray was visually influenced by the 1913 Armory Show and galleries of European contemporary works. In 1915, Man Ray had his first solo show of paintings and drawings. Man Ray abandoned conventional painting to involve himself with Dada, a radical anti-art movement. For Man Ray, Dada’s experimentation was no match for the wild and chaotic streets of New York. In 1913, Man Ray met his first wife, the Belgian poet Adon Lacroix, in New York. In July 1921, Man Ray went to live and work in Paris, France. In 1934, surrealist artist Méret Oppenheim, known for her fur-covered teacup, posed nude for Man Ray in a well-known series of photographs depicting her standing next to a printing press. With Lee Miller, his photography assistant and lover, Man Ray reinvented the photographic technique of solarization. In René Clair’s film Entr’acte, Man Ray appeared in a brief scene playing chess with Duchamp. Duchamp, Man Ray, and Francis Picabia were friends and collaborators.

The article said that medical marijuana will now cover Autism and sleep apnea. I am not 100% sure people with Autism should be smoking pot. The two kinds of pot are THC and CBD. THC is the one that stoners use to get high. THC is used for things like anxiety and is used in clinical trials. There are multiple things that can deter doctors from prescribing the drug. Some of the effects of smoking medical marijuana include: Your heart rate increasing by 20 to 100% for up to three hours. It can actually increase the risk of a heart attack in the first hour after using the drug. According to the article, statistically one in 11 users of medicinal marijuana become addicted, and that number increases to ONE IN SIX people who start smoking pot as teenagers. Again, I don’t know if prescribing medical marijuana to people on the Spectrum is a good idea or a really bad one, but there are a lot of variables. I have never smoked pot, but a few of my friends in High School did.

The Recovery Through Wholeness Chalkboard

The Maine Supreme Judicial Court will decide if state law requires Workers’ Compensation Insurance to pay for a millworker’s medical marijuana or if the insurer could be charged as an accessory in a drug deal under federal law. Justices are set to hear arguments in the case Wednesday at the Capital Judicial Center in Augusta, which will be the first time the state’s highest court has considered the question of insurance reimbursement for the cost of medical marijuana. The case pits a former Madawaska mill employee, injured on the job, against the company that administers the mill’s insurance for injured workers. Gaetan Bourgoin, now 58, of Madawaska, in 2015 sought reimbursement for medical marijuana prescribed for pain due to a back injury suffered in 1989 when he was 29 and working at what is now Twin Rivers Paper Co. Bourgoin tried a variety of opioid-based painkillers over the years without relief, according to briefs filed in Portland.

marijuana – Gerbil News Network

WASHINGTON, D.C. For Evan Wolentz, this day in the history of American criminal law was a long time coming. In his view all that changed this morning when it became legal to possess small amounts of marijuana in Washington. Wolentz is one of a number of young men and women who took to the streets here late last night to celebrate the new law only to be surprised when District of Columbia policeman cited them for illegal drug possession and took them into custody. O’Herlihy reads the young man his rights then patiently tries to explain away the confusion that clouds the minds of the assembled suspects as they are loaded into a police van for arraignment at a night session of the District’s Criminal Court. Sergeant Jim Hampy tries to give the potheads a lesson in American government when O’Herlihy fails to get through to them. His remark is greeted with an outburst of laughter, as if he’s just quoted a line from a late-night comic.

Alan Moore interview in Mustard comedy mag

14,800 words ~. Originally published in Mustard #04. Part I: Comedy in comic books Alan Moore sinks into a chair behind the coffee table in his home, an unassuming terraced house in Northampton. Then Jim got bought out by DC. There’s a brilliant book that I’d advise you to get called Men Of Tomorrow by Gerard Jones. Working on The Book Of Magic has been mine and Steve’s only magical practice for some years. If you think of our lives as a book, a narrative, when you finish the last page of the book, ‘The End’, and close it, the book doesn’t self-destruct. Immediately after we last spoke, I decided it was insane to work on the cover of what was going to be a 35-chapter book, so I’d better stop. I’m really glad that I did, because a cover for what the book was going to be about then wouldn’t have been appropriate to what the book has developed into. Part VII: Moore on Moore Alan’s thoughts on some of his classic works. I’m proud of the work me and the artists did on all the books, but the fact that I don’t have the moral right to declare myself owner of the work rankles to such a point that it’s quite painful to think about. As far as I know it’s the first time anyone’s attempted a book like that. Part VIII: Steve Moore &The Moon and Serpent Book of Magic I just wanted to say I was very sad to hear about Steve Moore passing.

At Denver’s Smokin 94.1FM, marijuana is on the air

In May, Paskin moved to Denver, bought a radio station for $875,000 and christened it Smokin 94.1, declaring it the state’s only pot-themed FM station. Marc Paskin bought a radio station in Colorado and converted it to a marijuana-themed format. In May, he moved to Denver, bought a radio station for $875,000 and christened it Smokin 94.1, declaring it the state’s only pot-themed FM station. In addition to classic rock and music to get stoned by, the station plays marijuana-laced comedy bits. In starting a cannabis-themed FM radio station, Mr. Paskin is trying to succeed with a largely unexplored model. Attracting advertisers would be a challenge, he said, since anyone from a dental office to a Walmart might decide to stick with a safer option – like a top-40 station that plays Taylor Swift songs. At least two other stations in Colorado experimented briefly with marijuana-centric formats, but quickly left the air. The station’s website displays similar imagery. Scott Greene, a former president of a cannabis legalization and advocacy group called Mile High Norml, said the station’s lazy-stoner vibe promotes an outdated notion of the state’s marijuana users, who include mothers, high-level executives and even children on medical treatment. Mr. Greene said he took particular offense to the station’s cartoon stoner.

The Top Pot TV Shows For Bud Smokers

In more recent years, the bar has been raised as to what constitutes a good TV show. This list contains not only TV shows that features reefer in its plot lines, but all are also immensely enjoyable, whether that means laughing your ass off or gasping your ass off. Out of the three main characters on this show, all three of them smoke regularly. The show includes dealing, growing, smuggling, eating, and of course smoking, in every way imaginable. A hybrid of both a reality show and game show, Kenny vs. Spenny is about two friends who live together, and compete in one on one competitions. About once per episode he makes a weed joke, or makes an off-handed comment about getting high after the show with his guests, so I always make it a point to light a blunt during his opening monologue. Sketch comedy shows are some of the best to watch baked, and this one at times seems like it was made for stoners. Out of all the TV shows I have previously mentioned, this is the only one where you won’t be laughing. What makes me love this show is that when characters smoke herb, they don’t make a big deal out of it or draw attention to the fact that they are. For the record, I didn’t include Entourage, Family Guy, or South Park just because I figured everyone has already seen those shows and I wanted to include some that maybe you haven’t heard of before.
