Grab your bong and rolling papers as we attempt to recall The Best Stoner Movies of All Time. Stoner movies have made a market of their own beginning in the 1970’s when the original stoner flick hit the big screen. The 1978 pot-loving film Up in Smoke has transitioned from a weeded up memory to a now High Times classic. Sure, more brainless blunt smoking comedies have hit the scene since. Just when we thought James Franco couldn’t outshine himself as the quintessential pothead in Pineapple Express, he makes a comeback in the 2013 film This is the End.

This apocalyptic 420 style story has constant hilarious energy between a large crew of self-indulgent LA actors. After getting super high, Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel hit up an eccentric James Franco house party. Here Seth struggles to merge his old and new friends as the world goes to complete shit. An enormous hell hole swallows most of the party, leaving the survivors to fight over weed, a milky way, and who’s allowed to jizz in Franco’s place. The fourth in the franchise, titled Last Friday, is in the works for a 2018 release.

So if you have the time, get your munchies ready and watch through these all-time best stoner movies.

Marijuana has moved out of the back alleys and into the open. In some states it’s legal to grow, to sell, to smoke and marijuana could be legalized in a city near you. They live in Colorado, one of two states where it’s legal to smoke pot medically and recreationally. Medical dispensaries are everywhere; people are smoking in private clubs and public festivals. Just decades ago marijuana was a legitimate medication also called cannabis, prescribed by doctors and dispensed by pharmacies, but that all changed in 1930.

For Harry Anslinger, the United States first drug czar, public enemy number one, you guessed it, was marijuana. He got the anti marijuana message out through news reports and then came the film Reefer Madness portraying the users of marijuana as unproductive, and crazed. Marijuana then became illegal in 1937 and by 1970 it was a Schedule I controlled substance. The government was saying it had no medicinal value and had a high potential for abuse. Marijuana is made up of two ingredients: THC which is the psychoactive part that makes you high, and CBD, also called cannabidiol, that scientists think it modulates the electrical and chemical activity in the brain.

Rotten Tomatoes

You’re always trying as a film reviewer to rationalise or explain why you might like or dislike a particular film. In spite of our best efforts, there are always some films whose appeal is hard to pin down. Saving Grace is one of those films, like so many British comedies, which you enjoy almost in spite of yourself. You certainly wouldn’t advertise it as one of your favourite films if the topic came up in conversation. In amongst its flaws there is genuine enjoyment to be had, even if it is slightly embarrassing for so-called film buffs to admit it.

The film has a familiar stock of British dramatic and character actors, making it feel like the sort of work people take in between series of Midsummer Murders. Bill Bailey, who also appears in Hot Fuzz, turns up for a brief cameo as a drug dealer and almost steals the entire film. On this basis, you would expect Saving Grace to be a flimsy blancmange of a film, barely hanging together on the strength of a few famous faces. There is no more damning criticism of any film, let alone a comedy, to say that it would be improved if watched through a cloud of illegal chemicals. For all his frequent concessions to cliché and sentimentality, Cole has a good track record with making films which play to a female audience, and which are genuinely about woman rather than simply having women in them.

The real proof of the film’s steadiness of tone and belief in the central story comes in the scene involving the two elderly ladies in the post office, who in a previous scene accidentally drank some of Grace’s hemp after mistaking it for tea. You couldn’t argue that Saving Grace was a great film, or indeed a very good film.

Satire: The Real Problem With Legalizing Marijuana – Langley Today

Still others dismiss the idea of charging people with a crime for the recreational use of marijuana as just one more absurd and failed part of the war on drugs. Those opposed to legalizing marijuana talk about it being a ‘gateway’ drug that eventually leads users to harder, more dangerous drugs like crack cocaine. Some talk about safety issues related to things like smoking marijuana while driving while others decry what they see as the road to addiction. The only real difference is that the marijuana pictures will be of people freaking out as they search frantically for chocolate chip cookies and potato chips after smoking a joint. University campuses will be aflame with protest that marijuana is not permitted in the classroom and the cost subsidized by government and AdBusters will protest the commercialization of Mother Nature.

People Against Marijuana will form and begin a concerted campaign against the smoking of marijuana. This will not be the same people as those currently opposed to legalizing marijuana. PAM will lobby provincial and federal governments for new laws restricting the use of marijuana in various public locations. They’ll start with the workplace and then move to ban smoking marijuana in malls and parks. Eventually, PAM will be successful at getting government to ban marijuana from rock concerts.

Marijuana Farming IndustryMarijuana will fall out of favour; more and more people will quit resulting in declining sales which will undermine the marijuana farming industry. Eventually, all of the fun of tokin’ with a few friends will be lost as marijuana users stand shivering outside in winter where the smokers used to stand.

Joe Rogan on California Weed Regulations “It’s Dumb!”

Best Stoner Movies

The story follows Jenkins and his stoner roommates Brian and Scarface, who start selling marijuana in a scheme to bail their friend Kenny out of jail. Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon’s 2012 scary movie subversion is filled with twists and turns that are even more mind-blowing after a few blunts. Plus the film’s reluctant hero ends up being Marty Mikalski, an affable stoner who is introduced by folding his enormous bong into a cop-proof travel mug. There’s even an epic gun battle between a perpetually stoned woman and some of the most brutal London gangsters ever depicted on film. While there’s plenty of laughs to be had, watching the movie in an altered state could also be confusing, as the fast-talking thugs have thick English accents and use so much British slang that some scenes come with subtitles.

There is not a stoner in the world who does aspire to live more like The Dude, the role that will never escape Jeff Bridges. That appeal hasn’t waned, and we’re still hungry for more. Martin Scorsese’s 1978 rock doc is stuffed with stoner rock icons crushing a tribute to The Band during their farewell performance. Watch Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Emmylou Harris, Eric Clapton, Ringo Starr, and many more shred so hard that you’ll take a big bong hit and air guitar along to this legendarily drug-fueled concert. There’s also plenty of great vibes and groovy fashion that’s catnip for old-school potheads who still wish it was the ’70s.

Columbia Pictures. The pairing of Seth Rogen and James Franco was an inspired choice by Green and executive producer Judd Apatow, and putting Danny McBride in a neck brace is a one-way ticket to comedy gold. Throw in some shockingly blunt violence and you have a recipe for stoner success.

CDC: Fake Marijuana Contaminated With Rat Poison Kills 3, Sickens More Than 100 « CBS Philly

CHICAGO – The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that fake marijuana likely contaminated with rat poison has killed three people in Illinois and caused severe bleeding in more than 100 others, including a few in four other states. The CDC has alerted doctors nationwide that patients with severe, unexplained bleeding may be additional cases. The CDC is helping Illinois authorities investigate the outbreak in that state, which began in early March. Illinois reported seven more cases on Tuesday, bringing the nationwide total to at least 116. Several patients and samples of so-called synthetic marijuana from Illinois have tested positive for a lethal ingredient often used in rat poison, the CDC and Illinois authorities said.

Symptoms include coughing up blood, blood in the urine, severe bloody noses, bleeding gums and internal bleeding. CDC’s alert says outside Illinois, emergency rooms in Indiana, Missouri, Wisconsin and Maryland have treated affected patients since March 10. Illnesses have been linked to fake marijuana before but this is the first outbreak involving rat poison contamination, said the CDC’s Renee Funk. Fake marijuana, also called synthetic cannabinoids, contains man-made chemicals that produce a high similar to marijuana. Tests on fake pot bought at a Chicago convenience store by undercover agents detected the rat poison ingredient, the U.S.

attorney’s office said in a news release. Illnesses from fake marijuana have increased in recent years; a CDC report noted at least 456 cases between 2010 and 2015. The products are up to 100 times more potent than the active ingredient in marijuana and severe reactions have included seizures, coma and delirium.

Marijuana Joke: Mike Marino Tells Funny Marijuana Jokes! – Stand Up Comedy

DA to streamline review of felony marijuana convictions for dismissal

After clearing hundreds of misdemeanor marijuana convictions, District Attorney George Gascon has a new tool that will automate the labor-intensive process for reviewing thousands of felony convictions for possible dismissal. In an announcement Tuesday morning, Gascon said the computer program will automatically determine whether nearly 5,000 felony marijuana convictions in San Francisco are eligible for dismissal or reduced sentencing and, if so, generate paperwork for the District Attorney’s Office to file with the court. Gascon’s office has cleared 428 misdemeanor marijuana convictions since January, when the district attorney began retroactively applying California’s new cannabis legalization laws under Proposition 64 to old cannabis cases. 64 legalized recreational cannabis for adults over the age of 21 and also allowed people convicted of marijuana-related misdemeanors and felonies to petition their cases for dismissal or reduction to a lesser offense. Rather than have individuals petition the court on their own, Gascon directed his office in January to review all 3,038 misdemeanor and 4,390 felony convictions in San Francisco dating back to 1975. As of Monday, the San Francisco Superior Court has granted 428 of the 528 motions to dismiss misdemeanor marijuana convictions that the District Attorney’s Office has filed since January.

The process for reviewing felony cases is more labor intensive, since prosecutors have to analyze criminal histories to determine whether a case can be dismissed or reduced under state law. The effort is also meant to remedy the disproportionate impacts of the war on drugs on people of color in San Francisco, where researchers have found that black people remain more than twice as likely to be arrested on suspicion of a drug offense than elsewhere in California. A recent study from the Center on Juvenile and Criminal Justice shows that black people were not only 2.4 times more likely to be arrested on a drug offense in San Francisco than in California in 2016, but 10 times more likely to be the subject of a drug arrest in The City than residents of other races. The disparities persisted even as the number of drug arrests in San Francisco plummeted by 92 percent over the last three decades, from 29,200 in 1988-89 to just 2,414 in 2015-16. Code for America plans to partner with three to five other California counties in addition to San Francisco, according to the District Attorney’s Office.

The group aims to clear 250,000 convictions by 2019.

Since the first statewide medical marijuana laws went into effect in California in 1996, the number of Americans with legal access to what for many is a pleasurable drug has been steadily growing. As a Schedule I drug, under federal law, marijuana is considered to have no medical use, although there are thousands of patient testimonials to the contrary. Today, in states with the most liberal marijuana laws, citizens’ access to the drug now resembles that of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, before the first attempts at federal regulation. Changes in federal drug policy during the Nixon administration loosened penalties for some kinds of drug violations, while expanding the powers of law enforcement and reshaping the federal anti-drug agencies to be more directly responsive to White House control. In 1970, Congress passed the Comprehensive Drug Abuse Prevention and Control Act, which placed marijuana in the most restrictive category of drugs having no permissible use in medical practice.

The scheduling of marijuana was suggested by an Assistant Secretary of Health pending the report from a Commission on Marijuana and Drug Abuse, headed by a former governor of Pennsylvania Raymond Shafer with members appointed by the president, speaker of the House, and the president pro tem of the Senate. As Carter pointed out in a message to Congress in 1977, anti-marijuana laws cause more harm to marijuana users than the drug itself. Ronald Reagan had opposed decriminalization of marijuana as governor of California and, as president, showed no sympathy for drug use or users. Drugs were drugs, albeit federal sentencing guidelines made some drugs much worse. The Drug Abuse Resistance Education program, which brought police into schools to lecture against drugs, was also founded during this period, as were clubs in many schools that enticed pupils to sign anti-drug pledges.

Concern over drug use appeared to peak in September the following year, when 64 percent of respondents in a New York Times/CBS News poll identified drugs as the single most pressing issue facing the nation, not long after Bush gave an Oval Office speech on the subject. Following the anti-drug campaigns of recent years, it is fascinating to note that today’s liberalization efforts have largely succeeded not by trying to shift attitudes about drugs, but by redefining marijuana as medicine and by focusing on the economic and social costs of the incarceration that has resulted from drug laws.

Back to the Movies

Marijuana and the movies have had a long, mostly potent relationship. Cannabis has inspired any number of cinematic artists, and it’s important to note how public perception of pot has changed throughout the years, with evolving laws and a recent explosion of smoker-friendly content. Marijuana has been used in an erudite fashion by filmmakers, woven into the narrative like a character in Curtis Hanson’s masterpiece Wonder Boys, the iconic Coen brothers sensation The Big Lebowski, and the underrated Leaves of Grass. Oliver Stone’s entire cannon feels especially indebted to ganja, as does Terry Gilliam’s psychotropic adaptation of Hunter Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Self-professed cannabis enthusiast Robert Altman left a misty haze over much of his work, most notably The Long Goodbye, California Split, and M*A*S*H, while his protégé, Paul Thomas Anderson, crafted a pot-infused ode to private eye cinema with Inherent Vice.

F. Gary Gray’s sly, smart, and hilarious pot comedy Friday still stands as one of the most influential cannabis narratives. The Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow connection has helped to legitimize marijuana to the masses, with box-office hits Pineapple Express and Knocked Up majorly emphasizing marijuana, treating it like a character as much as any of the leading actors. Musical biopic spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has some hilarious moments concerning reefer, the two Neighbors movies nearly give off a contact high, and the meta-comedy This Is The End carried a lit-joint torch of pro-pot components. Let’s not forget Danny McBride getting stoned with some sheep in Your Highness, which shared the skunky whiffs of 80’s cult-classics Krull and The Beastmaster.

High school comedies have consistently thrown marijuana into the equation, with Amy Heckerling’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused standing as cultural touchstones. Nearly all of Kevin Smith’s films seem to have been born out of a cloud of bong smoke, with the Jay and Silent Bob characters feeling like zeitgeist-tapping creations of cannabis-happy comedy. Greg Araki’s Smiley Face with Anna Faris is one of the more perceptive and giggle-inducing movies to feature a stoner at its center, while Jonathan Levine’s unique 90’s time capsule The Wackness painted a portrait of people’s lives fully dictated by marijuana, and how it can be used both for good and bad. Written by Nick Clement.

Marijuana-logues – 01.Ah, Marijuana

Marijuana cannabis jokes humor

So the devil took the man and showed him to a room full of hundreds upon thousands of georgeous and beautiful naked women. 100 years later the devil came by to let the three men out. He opened the door to the first man’s room and found the man collapsed on the ground, passed out with empty bottles laying around him and puke all over him. Finally the devil came to the third man’s room and opened the door. Sitting in the middle of all the bud, in the exact same position the devil had left him in was the man. A stoner would say, „Take me stoned, I’m home.

A stoner was relaxing next to a cactus with his horse standing next to him. This white stoner guy is heading off to Jamaica for a week with his buddies. His fiancee, Wendy, is really worried about her man being unfaithful, so she asks him to tattoo her name to his penis. When his penis isn’t erect you can see the letters W and Y. The woman feeling secure knowing that her name is tattooed on her man’s penis says good-bye to her fiancee and he leaves for Jamaica.

One day, while in Jamaica, the guy is at the urinal and a black Jamaican comes and stands at the urinal next to him. The drunk said, „I think I’m gonna pretend I’m a bottle and just roll down the hill so he did it the stoner thought for a minute then rolled down the hill when he got to the bottom he seen the drunk was in pieces on the ground so he walked over to him the drunk looks up and says how did you make it without getting hurt the stoner said I pretended I was a joint!

Agricultural Hemp vs. Marijuana: Cultivation Techniques

When it comes to cannabis, there is a lot of information and misinformation circling the internet. With growing support for marijuana legalization, America is running into the desperate need for readily available information on the plant responsible for so much controversy. One of the biggest misconceptions is that all cannabis gets you high. Agricultural hemp is produced for textiles, CBD Oil extracts, paper and a number of other uses. The plant most commonly used in the hemp industry is Cannabis Sativa, growing between 10 and 15 feet tall before harvesting.

Industrial hemp plants also have little to no THC, meaning that they have no psychoactive properties. One of the biggest differences between industrial-scale hemp production and marijuana growing operations is the environment in which you grow it. Industrial hemp is clutivated outdoors due to the massive size the crops can reach. The point of this type of hemp production is to get the greatest quantity for the lowest cost. Since the fibers and CBD contents will largely remain the same if using one hemp strain unilaterally, the deviation between each plant will be negligible.

Robert Schimmel: Medical Marijuana

MarijuanaDoctors.com Airs First Marijuana Television Commercial Ever Shown on a “Major Network”

Securing the airtime for our commercial on a major network was extremely difficult and at the same time, extremely satisfying. The spot began airing in New Jersey and is believed to be the first time that any major television network in the U.S. has allowed a commercial addressing the controversial subject matter and advertising the first ever medical marijuana service. MarijuanaDoctors.com draws this parallel in an attempt to prove the severity of consulting physicians in order to obtain medical marijuana for terminal & debilitating medical conditions where the doctor may recommend that the benefits of medical marijuana outweigh the risks of in order to improve a patients overall health. According to the company’s website, MarijuanaDoctors.com seeks to help patients with documented medical conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, chronic pain or any other ailment that is approved by their state of residence as a qualifying medical condition for cannabis, locate and book appointments with licensed doctors who are willing to recommend marijuana as a treatment for their ailments.

The company does not promote the casual or recreational use of marijuana or any other prescription medication. The company condones only the use of marijuana as a medication for recognized ailments in accordance with state law, as it believes it is a proven treatment for many medical conditions. 20 states and Washington, DC have legalized medical marijuana for specific terminal and debilitating conditions. MarijuanaDoctors.com was founded as the trusted gateway for patients searching for medical marijuana treatment in legal medical marijuana states. The company provides patients visibility and transparency in selecting a doctor and setting an appointment for a medical marijuana evaluation including detailed profile information, scheduling information, and ratings and reviews. MD understands the uncertainty associated with the process and that medical marijuana is often the only effective treatment for many ailments for which traditional medicine provides little relief or is accompanied by uncomfortable and dangerous side effects.

MD is dedicated to legitimizing the process for the booking and selection of medical marijuana doctors by standardizing the criteria and selection process for doctors allowed to join the company’s trusted network of quality physicians. MD also focuses on providing comprehensive scheduling and marketing services for doctors that are both already established medical marijuana physicians and those looking to expand practices into alternative medicine.

Rotten Tomatoes

Birthplace: Winterset, Iowa, USA. Arguably the most popular – and certainly the busiest – movie leading man in Hollywood history, John Wayne entered the film business while working as a laborer on the Fox lot during summer vacations from U.S.C., which he attended on a football scholarship. Wayne was cast in small roles in Ford’s late-’20s films, occasionally under the name Duke Morrison. It was Ford who recommended Wayne to director Raoul Walsh for the male lead in the 1930 epic Western The Big Trail, and, although it was a failure at the box office, the movie showed Wayne’s potential as a leading man. It was in action roles that Wayne excelled, exuding a warm and imposing manliness onscreen to which both men and women could respond.

In 1939, Ford cast Wayne as the Ringo Kid in the adventure Stagecoach, a brilliant Western of modest scale but tremendous power, and the actor finally showed what he could do. Wayne nearly stole a picture filled with Oscar-caliber performances, and his career was made. He starred in most of Ford’s subsequent major films, whether Westerns; war pictures; or serious dramas. Most of these films were extremely successful, and included such titles as Angel and the Badman, Island in the Sky, The High and the Mighty, and Hondo. The 1958 Western Rio Bravo, directed by Howard Hawks, proved so popular that it was remade by Hawks and Wayne twice, once as El Dorado and later as Rio Lobo.

At the end of the 1950s, Wayne began taking on bigger films, most notably The Alamo, which he produced and directed, as well as starred in. During the early ’60s, concerned over the growing liberal slant in American politics, Wayne emerged as a spokesman for conservative causes, especially support for America’s role in Vietnam, which put him at odds with a new generation of journalists and film critics. McLintock!, which, despite well-articulated statements against racism and the mistreatment of Native Americans, and in support of environmentalism, seemed to confirm the left’s worst fears, but also earned more than ten million dollars and made the list of top-grossing films of 1963-1964.

Marijuana at the movies

Don’t look to Hollywood history for a nuanced depiction of the average marijuana user. Seth Rogen reigns as the current king of stoner comedies, though he owes his success to the trails blazed by Cheech & Chong, Bill & Ted, Harold & Kumar, and those poor, poor teenagers infected with reefer madness generations ago. Memorable marijuana use in cinema rarely crosses into heavy drama. Dopeheads on film may act, well, dopey, but many users and non-users alike remember them because they’re bigger than life, and their humor transcends the stoner stereotype. In many ways, the expanded legalization of marijuana and ease of access may fly in the face of weed’s anti-establishment roots, meaning the golden age of ‘stoner comedies’ may actually be waning.

Rogen still makes room for pot in most of his movies, but the stories themselves are becoming more about growing up and being responsible Marijuana still matters, just not as much as, say, taking care of family. Writer/director Kevin Smith created a memorable duo of stoner heroes: Jay and Silent Bob. While the director now proudly touts his own regular marijuana use, the movies lack the punch and basic cohesiveness of even his laziest Jay and Bob bits. Rogen’s cannabis indoctrination of Hollywood works mostly because the comedian manages to make consistent films. Rogen may be the figurehead of the stoner film genre, but he’s ushering in an era where the genre fits more comfortably in the broader comedic landscape.

As marijuana continues its rise to the mainstream, there may be less need for lovable, anti-establishment stoner heroes. So long as the Dude abides, movies will always welcome them for the occasional shenanigans.

Thoughts From A Daily Marijuana Smoker

People have been turning to marijuana throughout history for a number of different reasons. Despite legalization efforts and the mainstreaming of marijuana use in America, there is still a prevalent negative perception of its users. The typical stoner stereotypes of lazy, shiftless, irresponsible individuals immediately come to mind for many people, with others viewing users as drug addicts and even as criminals. Proponents are fighting back against this unfair perception citing the very beneficial aspects of marijuana especially when compared to substances like alcohol. Despite how destructive it can be, most people won’t bat an eye if they hear that someone drinks every day to calm down and relax.

If the same person said that they smoked marijuana everyday for the same reasons, like the essay’s author confesses that they do, it could prove to be both socially and professionally problematic. Be sure to follow the link below for the author’s full essay on marijuana’s positive effects on their life! I moved to Northern California when I was 18 and was plunged into the world of marijuana. I have dealt with anxiety and OCD for most of my life, and I found it really quelled any stresses I was managing. In her learnings, she had encountered a lot of studies that had shown weed in moderate amounts was helping people sleep better, reduce anxiety, and even have better sex.

I decided to try smoking a bit of weed before bed, and within days, it completely transformed my life. Before I started smoking weed, I would sometimes lie in bed until 3 a.m. just going over everything I had to do the next day and not getting any rest.

Netflix Orders Marijuana Comedy Series Starring Kathy Bates

TV, making a 20 episode series order for the show that has the veteran skills of Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum at the helm. Disjointed is a stoner comedy based around an L.A. cannabis dispensary. The excellent Kathy Bates will take the lead role as the store owner, managing a group of constantly high employees -undoubtedly the source for ensuing dope centrist humor. Deadline reports that Bates’ character is a long-time campaigner for marijuana legalization, who is taking advantage of the relaxed cannabis laws in California and achieving her ambitions by running a dispensary. This will not be the first time Lorre has acquired the notable talent of Bates for one of his projects; the Oscar-nominated actress earned an Emmy for her guest appearance on Two And A Half Men in 2012. Lorre has found previous success working on various sitcoms, writing several episodes of Roseanne in the early 1990s and cycling through various series before ending up at the helm of the hugely popular Big Bang Theory. Netflix has a growing collection of original sitcoms, such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Grace And Frankie. The network’s open minded attitude towards traditionally controversial subject matter should make it a great fit for a weed orientated show, allowing Lorre more freedom to explore this potentially hilarious context than his usual home on CBS. It should be fun to see Bates take on a lead role in a sitcom and spread her comedic wings within this role as a marijuana matriarch. With Bates on board and the proven comedic expertise from its showrunners, this series has the potential to be something special. With luck, Lorre will be able to land some equally good talent to play the other regulars at Bates’ dispensary, and it will be interesting to see how the showrunner handles the move to a streaming platform like Netflix.

The Tragedy of Stoner Comedy

Fourteen states have effectively decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, and on June 4 Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Police Department announced plans to follow suit in NYC. As marijuana goes mainstream, its media portrayal has likewise softened. In the film, marijuana transforms seemingly normal, upstanding American youth into maniacs similar to the opium fiends of earlier stereotypes. Drugs were everywhere: on the strip, where people dropped microtabs of acid and then painted themselves blue; in middle schools, where young pushers did the work of the Fagin-esque masterminds of the marijuana trade; and in middle-class homes, where the sharing of one joint led a young Don and Betty Draper-esque couple to neglect its newborn in a bathtub with a running faucet, where the tot ineluctably drowned. Their straggly long hair, stoner talk, and constant fiending for the demon weed established the stereotype that prevails, in various permutations, to this day. Of late, the stoner comedy has become more realistic. The movie blended stoner stereotypes and broad humor with blood, gore, and violence. More than likely, the stoner comedies of the future will continue to play up the humor while conveniently overlooking the tragedy at the heart of American marijuana prohibition. Whatever the case, there will be no stoner comedy that deals with the harm inflicted on a family when an adult male breadwinner is sent to state prison for what is essentially a victimless crime. Marijuana prohibition has been the gateway to an exponential expansion of the prison-industrial complex, but that’s a reality silver-screen fantasies will not touch. As with romantic comedies, which give us a skewed view of love, the stoner genre is riddled with distortions and misrepresentations-a bad trip worthy of the worst directors in Hollywood.

Stewart Richlin’s Long Strange Trip To Become a Weed Lawyer

On any given night, past security and down a long corridor emanating a skunky, aromatic haze, attorney Stewart Richlin can be found in the lounge of a cannabis speakeasy comedy club. The people who select themselves into the cannabis community are groovy people who have a nice aura around them. After studying at UCLA and Southwestern Law before becoming an attorney in 1986, Richlin quit his job in 1995 to become a yoga teacher. Without a break between kindergarten and law school, Richlin says he was beginning to feel burned out after taking the bar exam. Though he practiced law for a few years, yoga offered the kind of break he needed and re-inspired his law practice later on. In 2002, Richlin reopened his own law practice, focusing on the then-brand new medical marijuana industry, helping growers and dispensary owners comply with state regulations. Until the implementation of Assembly Bill 266, which requires growers, dispensaries, delivery services, manufacturers and others in the medical marijuana industry to obtain state and city licenses while forcing some to shut down by 2018, when it takes effect, California’s largely unregulated medical marijuana program gave Richlin an opportunity to apply what he learned from yoga to his law practice. L.A. County alone is home to the city of Los Angeles, 88 independent cities and county land, so there are 90 different sets of medical marijuana rules, he says. If the opportunity presents itself, Richlin will also try to make the jury laugh – a little comedy goes a long way in the courtroom, bringing the court and jury down to basic human interaction. It’s part of Richlin’s greater move back into comedy as he prepares for the next stage of his career, which involves writing a TV pilot about opening up a yoga studio.

cal’s blog. about movies.

So i just picked up an adam sander/jim carrey four pack dvd for ten bucks at the local wal-mart. Regardless of personal feelings about wal-mart, i’ll drop 2.50 a movie for billy madison, happy gilmore, liar liar and bruce almighty. I’ve decided i prefer the adam sandler films both better than either jim carrey film. Perhaps that’s not a fair sampling as happy gilmore and billy madison are my two favorite adam sandler films. In addition to grandma’s boy, which is without a doubt my favorite adam sandler film of all time. I don’t think either one of liar liar or bruce almighty is near jim carrey’s best. So it gets the nod of the better of the two carrey films. As a matter of fact, i hardly recall jim carrey from that movie at all. Because anyone with a brain knows jim carrey’s best film is once bitten. Either way, these four movies in total are worth ten bucks for sure.

David Peel & the Lower East Side

At first, second and third listen the debut record by New York street musician and John Lennon protégé David Peel seems pretty ridiculous. Then there’s the lyrics, all of which are juvenile, dated and delivered in an erratic Tiny Tim-meets-Cheech & Chong style. Somewhere around the fourth or fifth listen Peel and his merry band of misfits begin to grow on you. Perhaps it’s because Peel, a marginal figure born to be a cultural relic, is a much more interesting, exciting and entertaining ’60s icon than all the overblown, bloated characters like David Crosby and Grace Slick. Unlike them, Peel never came in from off the streets. He can still be found singing these songs in New York’s Tompkins Square Park to this day. While that’s mildly pathetic, it’s also heartening. When he sings about smoking some grass and getting harassed by lame cops you tend to believe him.

Considered THE archetypal sensationalized anti-drug movie, but it’s really an exploitation film made to capitalize on the hot taboo subject of marijuana use. If you like this movie, try Maniac, which is also fun. Great as an exploitation movie as well as a b movie. A title that perfectly suits the movie, but not in the way it was perceived when this piece of propaganda was released. This movie is all about the dread marihuana, as they call it in the movie. There’s just too much madness in the movie. During the entire movie you’re being presented to an extreme version of all the prejudice there is against marihuana. Reefer Madness is a movie with players and a script. This movie, long-noted for it’s camp value and unintentional humor was a chore to watch. There are over a DOZEN ‘reefers’ or ‘marihuana cigarettes’ consumed in this movie, not for the faint of heart.

New Marijuana Report Finds No Link Between Weed And Lung Cancer

A recent report from the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine found that there is no link between weed and lung cancer. Their cannabis research also unearthed 100 other conclusions, many of which will make pot smokers really happy. It’s been proven that nicotine in cigarettes has been linked to many different cancers. Cigarette smokers know what they are getting into when they take a puff. The research shows that smoking marijuana will not increase your chance of getting cancer. There is minimal evidence that smoking weed is linked to one subtype of testicular cancer though. The research also showed that the use of cannabis is extremely helpful to treat many different ailments that plague many people on a daily basis. The research showed moderate evidence that cannabis is effective in helping people with sleep disorders and fibromyalgia. Plus, if Half Baked taught us anything, smoking weed will make you feel like you are floating through the air above New York City. Even though cannabis use isn’t linked to lung cancer, that doesn’t mean users are free of respiratory diseases.

Stoner film

Stoner film is a subgenre of comedy films that revolve around the use of cannabis. Typically, such movies show cannabis use in a comic and positive fashion. Generally, cannabis use is one of the main themes, and inspires much of the plot. High Times magazine regularly sponsors the Stony Awards to celebrate stoner films and television. Many stoner movies have certain elements and themes in common. The template involves a protagonist or protagonists who have or are attempting to find marijuana and have some task to complete. Often stoner films involve evading authority figures, sometimes law enforcement agents, who are portrayed as comically inept, but also parents, co-workers, friends, and security guards who disapprove of the protagonists’ marijuana usage usually out of a greater lack of acceptance of their lifestyle of leisure and innocence. Most serious moments are intended ironically, often to parody overwrought counterparts in mainstream cinema. The comic story arcs often approach or fall over the line into slapstick. Nine to Five was the first stoner film to feature a female protagonist.

Ralphie May On Marijuana, TMZ and Changing the Face of Comedy

If you haven’t seen this interview I did with the Beacon News out of Chicago, check it out. He was busted in Guam for pot possession after petting a drug dog at the airport. The Tennessee shock comic is brutally, hilariously honest about his podcast, his recreational drug use, his kids and balancing on life on the road with his family. So I got down and I walk 68 feet out of my way to pet a drug dog and while I was there I called another drug dog over. They’re both sitting in front of me and that’s their cue that they’ve found drugs. So I got busted with bringing marijuana into Guam and petting a drug dog. I know all the places where celebrities have gotten caught with drugs, like Sierra Blanca, Texas, where they pulled over Willie Nelson and pulled over Snoop that’s why when I go through there, there’s nothing on my bus at all. It’s one of the few plants that actually inserts nutrients back into the soil as opposed to leaching them out. If we just took away the shame, we could really tax the hell out of it and make a lot of money. A:. Exactly, and Richard was on good drugs.

Seth Rogen: Legalization won’t make marijuana any less funny

We haven’t found any real difference in the way people react to it on screen. I think right now probably more people are trying it than ever have because it’s becoming a little more socially accepted than it was. It’s probably less taboo than it’s ever been in some ways, but I think its popularity outweighs it’s taboo-ness. It’s honestly the thing that made us think it was a good idea in the first place. There are some jokes in this that definitely threaten to cross a line. If we are achieving that line, that is the way we are achieving it – through diligence and through showing the jokes to audiences and really seeing what people respond to and don’t respond to. If jokes don’t get laughs, then we don’t keep them in the movie. We don’t pretend that we, even after all these years, really know what people are definitively going to be OK with and not OK with. I’m honestly surprised with what more people are OK with more than anything. I wasn’t even sure people were going to get that joke, and the first time we screened it I was blown away by the reaction it got and was really surprised.
