Robin Williams – Alcohol and Marijuana – Live Stand Up Comedy

Now That Weed Is Legal in Canada, We Asked College Students if It’s Still Cool

Forty years after singer Peter Tosh’s immortal call to action, Canada’s about two weeks deep into the promised land of legal weed, and aside from a few hiccups-rogue dispensaries courting police raids, national cannabis shortages, and mass mail delivery delays-it’s been everything we’ve dreamed of. Like obviously it wasn’t legal but Vancouver has a weed culture already. I feel like the reason that nobody really cares that much is that people didn’t really care that much in the first place here because it was so lenient with the rules that it’s not like nobody was really afraid to smoke weed in the first place. My mom was telling me-she works at Safeway-she said that all of a sudden in her break room, everyone’s talking about weed when that would never be a topic of conversation before legalization. I wasn’t even smoking weed entirely before, but I had smoked weed openly in a park before it was legal.

So that’s the only thing that’s lame about it I would say, but weed itself isn’t lame. At the same time, it is funny that every time I had smoked weed before legalization, it was something I wasn’t supposed to be doing and now it’s like it’s lost some of its charm. So high schoolers smoking weed, they’re going to be in the same camp as their moms and dads. I’m glad for high schoolers smoking weed, they still get to experience that novelty, whereas for me I’m old [laughs]. I think stoner culture is completely a product of the effects of marijuana, it’s very legitimate that you smoke weed and you get the munchies, and you want to watch unintelligent comedy that’s easy to enjoy, I guess.

More people smoke it, more people enjoy the humor and basically start eating half-baked Ben & Jerry’s and watching old Cheech & Chong movies. They’ll never get that feeling that I got when I was smoking weed for the first time.

Doctors warn parents about marijuana mixed in with Halloween candy

SAN DIEGO: With recreational marijuana now legal in California, doctors are warning parents to be extra vigilant when checking their kids’ candy on Halloween. They worry that the kids may confuse edibles for candy. State law allows edibles but has strict guidelines for how much THC can be in them. A package can’t contain more than 100 milligrams, and each piece can’t have more than 10. Marijuana vendors say new rules also make it harder for the edibles to be confused for candy.

Packaging for marijuana-infused food must also be child resistant and clearly labeled. Dr. Elia recommends keeping edibles locked away, similar to the way people treat medicine they don’t want kids to get. He says the side effects of THC on children could be devastating. Elia also says parents should be extra vigilant when checking their kids’ trick-or-treat candy, to make sure an edible didn’t wind up in their collection.

Funny Marijuana Nicknames, According to the DEA – Rolling Stone

U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions hasn’t exactly taken a progressive stance on marijuana since taking office. Not only did the former senator from Alabama rescind an Obama-era policy aimed at curbing sentences for non-violent drug offenses, his understanding of marijuana is trapped squarely in the 1950s. The federal government feels similarly, as marijuana is still categorized as a Schedule I narcotic alongside heroin, LSD and peyote. The most robust compendium of street code belongs to marijuana.

Some are non-English or refer to specific marijuana strains rather than general code. If one should overhear a few teens conspiring to purchase some lime pillows, they will know that they are talking about drugs, not home decor, and the authorities can be alerted. Rolling Stone reached out to the DEA with some questions about the report, but the agency has yet to respond.

Tesla shares reel as executives quit and CEO smokes pot on webcast

Reuters) – Tesla Inc Chief Executive Elon Musk was filmed smoking marijuana and wielding a sword on a webcast, just hours before the automaker said its recently-appointed accounting chief would leave, the latest in a string of unusual behaviour and executive departures that have stunned investors. Shares of the electric carmaker tumbled more than 6 percent on Friday to $263.24, with investors on edge after a tumultuous August during which Musk proposed and then abruptly pulled the plug on a go-private deal. Chief Accounting Officer Dave Morton resigned after just one month in the job because of discomfort with the attention on the company and pace of work during that time, Tesla said in a filing on Friday. Later on Friday, Tesla named a new president of automotive operations, promoting eight-year Tesla employee and former Daimler truck exec Jerome Guillen into the role overseeing all automotive operations and reporting to Musk. That move, described in a company blog with several other promotions as a result of board and management discussions, gives Musk a seasoned auto industry veteran to lean on at a time when some investors have called for a new chief operating officer. Shares barely moved after hours, when the promotions were announced.

Morton and Toledano, whose departures come shortly after the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission opened an inquiry into Musk’s aborted privatisation plan, join dozens of senior executives who have left Tesla. Late on Thursday, Musk was filmed drinking whiskey, briefly smoking marijuana and wielding a Samurai sword during a 2-1/2-hour live Web show with comedian Joe Rogan that swiftly spread across social media. Analysts on Friday reiterated their call for Tesla to bring in another senior leader. SOBERING EFFECT ON INVESTORS.Tesla’s $1.8 billion junk bond maturing in August 2025 plunged as much as 4 cents on the dollar to below 82 cents, a record low, in Friday trading, pushing the yield above 8.8 percent.

Coupled with an upfront cost of 21 percent of insured value, it now costs an investor around $280,000 to insure $1 million of Tesla debt for a year. With Tesla’s stock falling to its lowest level since April, short sellers added 810,000 shares to their positions, bringing the total as of Thursday to about 32.6 million shares, according to S3 Partners, a financial technology and analytics firm. Tesla has told investors it expects to turn a profit in the second half of this year, a forecast the company’s head of investor relations, Martin Viecha, reiterated at a conference earlier this week sponsored by RBC Capital Markets, RBC analyst Joseph Spak wrote in a note on Thursday.

7 Comedians Who Enjoy Marijuana

Although weed can definitely highlight what’s weird about your surrounding or amplify already-comedic situations, it can’t instill a fully-developed sense of humor. Doug Benson’s comedy career revolves almost entirely around his love of cannabis. Benson created the 2008 documentary Super High Me, a druggy take on Morgan Spurlock’s McDonald’s exposé Super Size Me, in which Benson smokes weed in huge quantities every day for a month. Like a trippy version of Mike Nichols and Elaine May, collaborators Kate Berlant and John Early showcase a weird brand of character-based comedy in seemingly improvised skits like Family Dinner and Reunion. Berlant and Early’s deadpan comedy is deeply rooted in the same pseudo-intellectual and fame-obsessed millennial culture that it satirizes, making for an especially meta comedy experience.

Each of the two wrote and starred in full episodes of the 2016 Netflix original comedy The Characters – Early’s episode totally nails some cringe-worthy identities like a self-absorbed yuppie party host and a sassy but depressed Christian comedienne. Dave Chappelle staked a claim to stoner fandom early on in his career, having written, produced, and starred in the 1998 cannabis classic Half Baked. Chappelle briefly bowed out of the spotlight after Chappelle’s Show was canceled in 2006 and now lives a low-key life with his family in suburban Ohio. A recent GQ interview with Chappelle yields some other great nuggets: he may have bought weed from Idris Elba back in the day, and once requested permission to smoke weed onstage from crack-smoking Toronto mayor Rob Ford. Jason Segel doesn’t just play a cannabis enthusiast on TV.

He’s well known for his love of weed, and has made a name for himself as a leading man in comedies like Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Jeff, Who Lives At Home, blending bumbling antics with undeniable sincerity. George Carlin is one of the first and arguably best full-fledged observational comedians. Carlin’s countercultural humor was at least partially fueled by cannabis: in a retrospective interview with Jon Stewart, he claimed to.

Rick and Morty’s Cannabis Subculture Warps Into Los Angeles

Trip out and chill in the Meatwad 4D Dome, or dive into a virtual-reality experience inspired by Dream Corp LLC, the Adult Swim show set in a sketchy dream-therapy facility. At 9 p.m. on Sunday, October 7th, Rick and Morty get a live showcase as composer Ryan Elder leads a 37-piece orchestra through musical highlights from the show in a Musical Ricksperience. As we prepare to run around at the Adult Swim Festival, we asked ourselves: why is there such a solid Rick and Morty. Just as cannabis helps connect us to the present moment, and enjoy things as they unfold, Rick and Morty deems friends, family, and doing what we love much more important than unanswerable questions about why we’re here in the first place.

Take the McDonald’s Szechuan sauce debacle, for instance. Twitter had a meltdown, and everyone had a good time making fun of Rick and Morty. Fan art is one of the most wonderful interpretative things in the world, and the weed-loving creatives who watch Rick and Morty have left no artistic pickle unjarred. To the fan art pot-culture pantheon with his collection of joints in the shape of Rick, Morty, and iconic characters Mr. Meeseeks and Mr.

Poopybutthole. To pairing a different strain of cannabis with each episode of the show. If you think your love of a TV show makes you better or smarter than other people, you should smoke a joint, and think about how you’re missing the point. Tickets to the Adult Swim Festival Oct. 5-7 are available here. The festival does not permit medical or recreational cannabis onsite.

Medical Marijuana Is Not Compassionate Comedy

Report: 1 in 5 Mass. adults use marijuana

BOSTON – About 21 percent of adults in Massachusetts have used marijuana in the last 30 days, and of those who have consumed the drug, about a third reported having driven under the influence, according to a new Department of Public Health report. The study found that more than half of adults in Massachusetts perceive marijuana to have slight or no risks, and more than half of marijuana users consume it for non-medical purposes. The DPH reported that 26 percent of men and 17 percent of women have used marijuana in the last month, a total of roughly 21 percent of adults in the state. The study, required by the marijuana law legislators put on the books a year ago, began in early 2017 and found that the rate of marijuana use is greatest among people aged 18 to 25. DPH said baseline data suggest that about 7 percent of all adults drove under the influence of marijuana in the past 30 days and that about 12 percent of all adults rode with a driver who was under the influence of marijuana.

Nearly 35 percent of adults who reported using marijuana in the past 30 days also reported driving under the influence of marijuana, DPH said. There is currently no roadside test, similar to a breathalyzer test for alcohol, for law enforcement to check for marijuana impairment. Legal non-medical marijuana sales were expected to start July 1 in Massachusetts, but that target will not be met. The Cannabis Control Commission meets Monday and is expected to license the state’s first retail marijuana shop. In total, 3,022 individuals responded to the survey, DPH said.

About 71 percent of the state’s marijuana users are white, 12 percent are Hispanic, 7 percent are black and 3 percent are Asian, the report found. The report said white non-Hispanic men and people between ages 18 and 20 have the highest prevalence of marijuana use.

Marijuana-friendly campuses? I don’t think so

In the run-up to the legalization of recreational marijuana in Canada on Oct. 17, 2018, many universities and colleges are still in a wait-and-see position concerning marijuana use on campus. TRU’s 20-person Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, of which I am a member, unanimously voted on March 5, 2018, to ban all smoking of marijuana products on campus – for health and safety reasons. Pro-marijuana smokers on the TRU committee argued that marijuana smoke is no different than cigarette smoke and that smoking areas designated for cigarette smoke should also be used for marijuana. Naïve bystanders cannot tell the potency of the marijuana smoked just by smell alone. Most animal studies demonstrate the ease with which such second- hand marijuana smoke can negatively affect behaviour.

Very few know that marijuana smoke has 300 to 500 per cent more carcinogens than tobacco smoke. Marijuana has been linked to addiction, drops in grades, slips and falls and car accidents. The JOHSC at Thompson Rivers University is considering individual ingestion of medical marijuana – via brownies, gummy bears or pills – on campus because the consumption of such medicinal products doesn’t negatively impact others directly. Marijuana is an intoxicant and therefore is analogous to drinking alcohol on campus. Smoking marijuana should therefore fall under the Liquor Control and Licensing Act Section 40, 1996, chapter 267.

As TRU did not allow the open consumption of alcohol in public places on campus, neither would it allow marijuana to be smoked on campus. Marijuana has been linked to impaired motor co-ordination, altered judgment and risky sexual behaviour.

High Maintenance Archives

Joel Fernando, a Brooklyn filmmaker with hipster hair and bright red aviators, pitched his marijuana venture at a popular Colorado Springs coffee shop, reports Rebecca Celli of The Colorado Independent. Fernando’s plan is two-fold: to start up a major pot production operation in Colorado and to chronicle his process for a new web series, to be distributed by Slate this January,. The series will explore Fernando’s business endeavor through numerous short documentary installments. Each episode will be less than 10 minutes, and will feature people and policies central to Colorado’s budding marijuana economy. Fernando is not the first aspiring marijuana entrepreneur to drive cross-country on a whim.

He’s also not the first young urban filmmaker to create a pot-oriented web series. If New York is the fifth character in Sex and the City, then pot is the third in the YouTube web series turned half-hour-long Comedy Central show, Broad City. The series, which follows the female twenty-somethings in New York City trope, is known for its crude humor and memorable scenes of pot-smoking through Skype. The episodes of High Maintenance, the most intricate rendition of the pot web series trend, are the well-crafted vignettes of diverse New Yorkers – middle-aged bird watchers, Passover seder-goers, couch surfers, a cross-dressing father – all subtly bound together by the narrative of a nameless pot delivery man. The best web series sell out, or at least begin to sell.

Slate, the distributor of Fernando’s series, publishes stories commenting on all of these shows. As for Joel Fernando, his upcoming series will be free and relatively unpublicized.

Marijuana-based businesses continue development – Las Vegas Review-Journal

Marijuana-based businesses in Southern Nevada are continuing to expand in the region as the gates to recreational sales opened less than a year ago. Another facility being built in Las Vegas is by Canadian-based Marapharm Ventures Inc. The company’s wholly owned subsidiary, Marapharm Las Vegas LLC, is constructing on a 7-acre site in Apex Industrial Park that will contain a roughly more than 300,000-square-foot project for the cultivation and production of recreational marijuana. Klassen said the company sees Las Vegas as a massive market, comparing his native Canada’s population of about 36 million spread across hundreds of miles versus the more than 40 million tourists who come to the Strip. Riana Durrett, executive director of the Nevada Dispensary Association, said the survey was based on property improvements since the medical marijuana program began in Nevada.

Findley estimates there could be as much as 1 million to 2 million square feet of space under development in the Southern Nevada region for facilities being used for the medical and recreational marijuana demand in the region. Most of the local operators were anticipating that recreational marijuana would become legal in the state according to Jack, which it did in the 2016 election cycle. Jack is projecting a higher growth rate for development in the local area compared with other markets that have had recreational in place for some time. Marijuana Business Daily reports that compounded annual sales growth is expected to increase by 14 percent to 25 percent over the next five years on a nationwide basis. Projections from Marijuana Business Daily show 2018’s national recreational and medical marijuana sales to range from $6.7 billion to $8.8 billion.

In early January, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions announced that he was rescinding guidance set during the Obama years that kept a policy of not interfering with state marijuana laws. Sessions has been an opponent of marijuana operations. In March, Congress gave protections to medical marijuana, extending provisions that doesn’t allow Sessions to use funding to go after states with legalized medical marijuana in a $1.3 trillion spending bill that funds the government through September.

Monday in Marijuana

We’re still monitoring the fallout of last week’s momentous decision that signaled the end of the federal prohibition on medical marijuana, a stipulation buried deep in the 1,603 page bipartisan federal spending package, and it seems as if the news has barely stirred a ripple in the pond for the reefer madness set. The families of those suffering from ailments that could be relieved by marijuana are wondering exactly what the hold up is. Colorado continues to be the epicenter for the legalization movement. Instead of government money being spent to investigate the negative effects of marijuana, an $8M research grant was awarded by the Colorado Board of Health to look at whether the plant can truly help with epilepsy, brain tumors, Parkinson’s disease and post-traumatic stress disorder. With a locally-based economy booming, teen use of cannabis dropping, and crime rates falling, and governments reaping a windfall of tax profits throughout Colorado, neighboring states have finally decided that enough was enough.

Two teenagers from Gaylesville, Alabama were arrested last week on felony possession of marijuana as they worked off a cruel case of the munchies in a Waffle House. File under parliamentary governmental systems: the editor of a popular marijuana news website in Israel is running for Knesset with a predictable agenda. In Canada, the Conservative government lost its latest appeal aimed at preventing medical marijuana users from growing their own, because you know, what the hell and how dare they and everything. The court passed down an unanimous decision, which prevented medical users from buying their drugs off the streets from young kids who hang out in Waffle Houses, or Tim Hortons, as the case may be. The epileptics of Brazil are slowly succeeding in making their own case that some future politicians will sue over, seeking the legalization of medical pot.

Brian Borncamp contributed this thoughtful article to us last week, which imagines a future economy on Buffalo’s East Side featuring good pal cannabis. By all intents and purposes, the marijuana biz is a slow train coming, laden with long-term and localized economic benefits that far outweigh the negative effects, and Borncamp’s piece is a slice of that future.

If Jeff Sessions Got Caught With Marijuana: Stoner Comedy

VIPblog2009

December 2 – More on MarilynWhile CNN aired a story neglecting to mention marijuana, other outlets have uncovered more about Marilyn Monroe’s alleged marijuana use, uncovered in a home movie made in the late 1950s. July 9, 2009 – Ads Call for Legal Pot in CAThe Marijuana Policy Project has launched a TV ad campaign in support of legalizing marijuana to help solve California’s budget crisis. Over the objections of her own Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs, Smith announced in a May 2008 speech to Parliament that her government would seek to reclassify marijuana as a Class B drug, four years after Tony Blair’s government downgraded it to Class C. The NORML blog picked up on the news that Smith lied about increased potency of marijuana when she successfully pushed for harsher laws. Geraldo Rivera, who smoked pot on camera in 1974 will reportedly resume his research on Fox’s Geraldo at Large tonight Rivera interviewed VIP Rob Van Dam for a recent story on marijuana legalization and noted in another that VIP Montel Williams lobbied New Jersey for a medical marijuana law.

The Mayor of Castro Street: The Life & Times of Harvey Milk by Randy Shilts confirms that, as in the movie, Milk swore off marijuana as he took the public stage, but remained allied with marijuana activist Dennis Peron while Republicans were hammering away against the three G’s: gays, grass and Godlessness. Because of law enforcement taken against people that have used marijuana for medicinal purposes, DiMaria would not say when she used marijuana or how she obtained it, but she did say it was medically beneficial to her. Marijuana reformers won’t be so celebratory this year, since on April 17 U.S. government lawyers said its prosecution of medical marijuana club operator Charles Lynch was consistent with DOJ policy, despite recent pronouncements to the contrary. After Califano said more teens are in treatment for today’s super-strong marijuana, Rebagliati said he thought marijuana was the safer choice than alcohol or tobacco, that it was fat free and didn’t make you feel bad the next day.

What Is the Best Way to Smoke Weed?

Stoners have argued and debated about the best way to smoke weed for decades. Everyone should now how to roll a decent joint, even if they don’t smoke. Knowing how to roll a joint is a life skill, like knowing how to change a tire or how to poach an egg. Pipes are probably the most convenient way to smoke marijuana. A good hit from a clean pipe is my preferred method for fancy-pants weed tasting.

My friend Michael Backes, author of Cannabis Pharmacy: The Practical Guide to Medical Marijuana recommends a good hit from a clean glass pipe. One good inhale and exhale should give you exactly what you need. The nicotine from the cigar wrapper and the THC from the cannabis combine to give an intense high. Blunts aren’t for everyone, and be careful that you don;t develop a nicotine addiction to go along with your cannabis habit. Maybe people claim that a good vape gives the best flavor, but I feel like the high from a vaporized cannabis is not the same as the high from incinerating the whole flower.

Ngaio Bealum is a writer, comedian, cannabis activist, and a decent juggler. You can catch him on the road and MCing the International Cannabis Business Conference.

California marijuana CEO resigns following #PermitPatty controversy

The CEO of a California marijuana company resigned abruptly Tuesday after several days of controversy spawned by a viral video in which she appeared to be calling police to report an 8-year-old girl who was selling bottled water without a permit in San Francisco. TreatWell, based in San Francisco, manufactures marijuana tinctures for humans and pets. Ettel sparked a national firestorm last week when she allegedly threatened to call authorities on Erin Austin and her daughter Jordan because the girl was selling water without a permit to people on their way to a San Francisco Giants game at AT&T Park. Some of the criticism surrounding Ettel stemmed from the fact she is white and the girl is African-American. The hashtag #PermitPatty began trending on Twitter over the weekend as a nickname for Ettel, and she garnered criticism from nearly every corner of the country.

Ettel was even lampooned by Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. TreatWell was also dropped by multiple California retailers, and it was unclear whether the company would be able to survive the controversy.

RTD to double trains on G-line tracks between Denver and Arvada as testing ramps up

Residents of the west Denver suburbs will notice more trains on the tracks for RTD’s yet-to-open G-line beginning Thursday as the transit district moves into the next phase of testing. The commuter rail line, which will provide service from downtown Denver to Arvada, Wheat Ridge and parts of Adams County, has now been federally approved to carry six trains for up to 10 hours a day, RTD said in a news release. The trains will run along the 11.2-mile train line roughly every 15 minutes between 3 a.m. and 1 p.m., according to RTD. The new testing doubles the amount of trains and the frequency with which they run over the previous phase that began July 20.

The district is ramping up to a full service day’s worth of testing, a period of 21 consecutive hours. The public is asked to abide by proper safety protocols around the tracks. The G-line was originally expected to open in fall 2016 but safety concerns have repeatedly delayed it.

Does Marijuana Cause Permanent Brain Damage in Adults?

Below is an approximation of this video’s audio content. You don’t know, until you put it to the test. For a few hours after smoking, one’s learning, memory, and attention may also be impaired. The same with cognitive impairments-gone within a month or two after stopping, unless they started regularly using as a teen. Those with the most persistent cannabis use starting as an adolescent may end up losing up to eight IQ points-significantly more than if they started as an adult, and even if they then quit, starting that young appears to cause permanent brain damage.

Sounds like if you start using as an adult there don’t seem to be any irreversible neurological problems-unless, perhaps, you smoke like 16 joints a day. In 2017, a study was published on extreme chronic and heavy cannabis use, and their poor brains really did seem to go to pot. This was at 10 times the average daily dose in Colorado-for example, a total lifetime consumption of around 75,000 joints.

Cheech and Chong Say ‘Pot’s Over’ Now That Republicans Like John Boehner Are Supporting Marijuana Reform

The age of marijuana’s rebellious and cool status is officially over, according to Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. It all started when late-night host Colbert asked Marin and Chong what they thought about the push for legalized pot now that Republicans like former House Speaker John Beohner-a longtime opponent of marijuana reform-were starting to support pot’s legalization. The company grows and sells legal marijuana and services 11 states. According to 68-year-old Boehner, he decided to join the company in effort to get veterans legal access to the drug. Although Beohner’s newfound acceptance of marijuana raised eyebrows, his sentiments regarding the medical value of the plant falls in line with a growing number of Americans who believe patients and adults should be able to legally consume cannabis.

A Pew Research Center report in January found 61 percent of U.S. adults were in favor of legal marijuana.

Funny pot smokers marijuana comedy Ep51Part3

Marijuana-friendly campuses? I don’t think so …

Naive bystanders cannot tell the potency of the marijuana smoked just by smell alone.

Paid content: Unlock Plenty of Perks with Your Medical Marijuana Card

Medical cannabis was legalized in California way back in 1996 with Prop. Now two years years into recreational, the medical cannabis market hasn’t disappeared. More municipalities are in favor of MMJ. Current numbers show that only 14% allow recreational cannabis dispensaries and 19% allow recreational cannabis deliveries, while 20% allow storefront medical dispensaries and 32% allow medical cannabis deliveries. As a MMJ patient, you’re allowed to buy and possess more cannabis due to less restrictive purchase limits and increased possession limits.

There’s significant legal framework protecting medical cannabis patients. You’re allowed to grow more of your own cannabis; dispensaries can only give free cannabis to medical cannabis patients; and you’re protected from prosecution, as long as you posses/carry/grow the legal limit. Cannabis is still illegal for anyone under the age of 21 without a medical cannabis card. If you are, you’ll need a medical cannabis card to buy marijuana anywhere in California. You’re also protected by HIPPA regulations so your medical cannabis records won’t show up in a background or pre-employment check.

A medical marijuana ID card, or MMIC, is state-issued and puts you in a California database with a unique ID number; no personal and private info required! Plus, as mentioned, it saves you from state or local cannabis sales taxes. These cannabis experts are available everyday to address any questions or concerns you have about being a marijuana patient – legislation, products, prices, storefront vs cannabis delivery like Nugg. Check out NuggMD today and find out for yourself if medical cannabis right for you!

Museum Dedicated To Comedy Opens In Lucille Ball’s Hometown

Celebrate all comedy, and establish Jamestown as a destination for that. She’s executive director of the brand-new National Comedy Center. Gunderson says it’s chock-full of comedy history. GUNDERSON: In the first wing alone visitors encounter a dress and joke cards from Phyllis Diller, Joan Rivers’ personal and creative papers, Jack Benny’s tuxedo, Charlie Chaplin’s cane, Seinfeld’s puffy shirt and Emmy award, Harold Ramis’…. CORNISH: Whether you’re a casual fan or a comedy nerd, Gunderson says there’s enough within the walls of the National Comedy Center to keep you occupied for days.

No. CORNISH: Joking aside, Black says his favorite part of the collection is George Carlin’s extensive personal archive. BLACK: You’ll see notes that he wrote of his comedy sketches. CORNISH: It’s a peek into the process of a comedy genius, something Black says is important to save for the next generation. BLACK: There’s a real possibility that a lot of the work in terms of comedy, in terms of the history of comedy is going to get lost.

So what this provided was a space in which that through line could be maintained and expanded on so that a kid could go back and see if they’re doing comedy or they love comedy, you know, where it came from. Lewis Black has been coming to the area for a long time for the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival. If you’re devoted to comedy, the trip is well worth it. CORNISH: The National Comedy Center is open as of this week in Lucille Ball’s hometown, Jamestown, N.Y. Transcript provided by NPR, Copyright NPR..

Comedy finally has a home

It may be as good a reason as any for the construction of the new high-tech center devoted to what has made people laugh from Vaudeville to now. The nonprofit center in Jamestown was inspired by hometown hero, Lucille Ball, who envisioned a place where comedy would be celebrated as an art form. The city of about 30,000 people in the southwest corner of New York already is home to the annual Lucille Ball Comedy Festival and the Lucille Ball Desi Arnaz Museum. Located in a repurposed 1930 art-deco train station, the center is part museum, part hall of fame and part video arcade, keeping visitors smiling as they move through displays of comedic artifacts. There also are plenty of chances to laugh at the pros in action.

A club-like comedy lounge shows stand-up bits, and a movie theater has clips of classic scenes with celebrity commentary. A hologram theater initially will feature Jim Gaffigan’s evolution as a performer. The 37,000-square-foot, $50 million center received $9 million in funding from New York state, along with private and federal support. The House of Representatives on July 23 unanimously approved a bill designating it as the nation’s official comedy center. U.S.

Sen. Charles Schumer, whose cousin, comedian Amy Schumer is in the opening-week lineup, is working on Senate action. He is part of the center’s largely celebrity advisory board, along with Gaffigan, Carl Reiner, Laraine Newman, W. Kamau Bell, Paula Poundstone and others. Among displays is the trench coat Lenny Bruce would wear in anticipation of going from stage to jail.

DISJOINTED Official Trailer (HD) Kathy Bates Netflix Marijuana Sitcom

Netflix Marijuana Strains Used to Market Comedy That’s All Smoke and No Fire

If you regularly keep up on weed news, you’ve probably heard a bit about the new Netflix marijuana strains that were available last weekend as part of a promotion for their original comedy series Disjointed. While it’s always a welcome opportunity when a show attempts to normalize the use of weed, Disjointed may not be the best example of this, sadly. If thousands of personalized Instagram photos of people excitedly or nervously standing in front of a haunted house can reach horror fans, it stands to reason that Netflix is considering stoners a target audience for their marijuana-centric show by offering limited edition official Netflix marijuana strains. Three strains tie directly into Disjointed while other Netflix marijuana strains reference additional original programming such as Arrested Development and Orange is the New Black. The strains were available at West Hollywood’s Alternative Health Herbal Services over the weekend and Netflix received no profit from their sale, meaning their stake in this was purely promotional.

The creative minds behind the marketing for Disjointed weren’t paralleled by the show’s writers. With this kind of lazy humor on a show set in a medical marijuana dispensary, you can probably guess how they handle stoner humor. It’s here that the idea to market official Netflix marijuana strains may have skipped a beat. The show is interrupted by fake commercials for marijuana products and bizarre segues that almost echo That ’70s Show. Not exactly the kind of jokes you’d hope for from a show about a marijuana dispensary in 2017.

I recognize that Disjointed is a comedy show but its premise tackles some volatile situations, and placing the show in a unique position to actually broadcast a certain reputation for medical marijuana. Shows like Broad City, Six Feet Under and even Legends of Tomorrow seem to do more by showing regular people smoking weed and functioning normally in the greater plot of things.

Legal marijuana: Fresno City Council passes ban on pot businesses

Retail marijuana dispensaries and other businesses related to recreational use of marijuana will be barred from setting up shop in Fresno after the City Council voted 4-3 Thursday to prohibit such establishments. Councilmen Bredefeld, Steve Brandau, Paul Caprioglio and Luis Chavez voted for the commercial prohibition, while Council President Clint Olivier and council members Esmeralda Soria and Oliver Baines voted no. The code amendment still must return to the City Council for a second reading and final approval, most likely at the council’s Sept. 21 meeting. Testing labs in industrial areas of the city would be allowed, provided that marijuana testing represents 20 percent or less of their business. Prior to Thursday’s vote on the ban, the council approved a proposal by Olivier to seek a consultant to help the city study issues related to marijuana and Proposition 64.

While the council approved the search for a consultant, a majority of the members also favored moving forward with a ban now. Caprioglio said the council has the freedom to modify its actions depending on what a consultant may recommend in the coming months. Public comments were cut short just before noon so the council could vote before several members had to leave for already-scheduled lunch meetings. Brand reminded the council and the audience that the ban only deals with recreational uses of marijuana. Existing city laws prohibit medical marijuana dispensaries – a subject of many of the comments from the public in recent weeks.

A Fresno ordinance to cap at six the number of plants that can be cultivated for personal use, and regulate where and how marijuana can be grown by residents, was initially approved in June but has yet to clear a final vote. The second reading of that ordinance, also backed by Bredefeld, has been beset by delays, including infighting among council members.

NZ On Air: History of Kiwi comedy, Patrick Gower’s look at marijuana among the projects funded

A history of New Zealand comedy, a Stuff Circuit interactive documentary series and a two-part Patrick Gower investigation into marijuana are among the Kiwi factual projects which have received funding in the latest round of handouts from NZ On Air. The independent broadcast funding agency announced a $9m investment in 24 new projects on Monday, amounting to more than 7600 minutes of content. Among the most eye-catching were Funny As: The Story of New Zealand Comedy, a series chronicling what has made Kiwis laugh throughout the years, destined for TVNZ1, and Three’s Patrick Gower: The High Road. The latter will explore the opportunities for New Zealand if marijuana was legalised, with Gower looking at the overseas experience, exploring the pros and cons of legalising marijuana for recreational, as well as medicinal, use. MediaWorks chief content officer Andrew Szusterman said with marijuana use likely to be legalised here in the future they felt it was important for New Zealand society to explore how such a decision has impacted other communities.

For his own part, Newshub’s national correspondent Gower said while he always had his doubts that marijuana wasn’t good for anything more than people getting stoned, every day there seemed to be headline from somewhere in the world proving him wrong. Ironically, The High Road comes hot on the heels of another similarly themed two-part documentary In Pot Pursuit which screened on TVNZ earlier this month. It will be distributed on Stuff and will also screen on Māori Television. Prime will screen Recovery 29, a documentary about the potential re-entry to the Pike River Mine, while The Coconet. Tv’s Talune: Ship of Death will be aiming to enlighten younger generations about the story of a New Zealand ship that arrived in Samoa in 1918 carrying an influenza strain that wiped out a quarter of the Samoan population.

Newly funded lifestyle series include Māori Television’s Pio Terei-hosted Off the Grid and a six-part show following New Zealand NBA star Steven Adams’ Kiwi-based basketball camps, a TVNZ medical information series The Check Up and one on teenagers at a high school teen pregnancy unit, which will also air on the state broadcaster. Existing shows funded for another series include Anika Moa: Unleashed, Prime’s Making New Zealand, reality competition Design Junkies and long-running rural lifestyle series Country Calendar. NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says the 24 funded projects demonstrated the wealth and diversity of ideas of content creators.

Cannabis cruising: five weed-friendly places to get stoned in the Big Smoke

The good news is that this situation has a built-in solution: there are many lounges and cannabis-friendly businesses already operating that allow customers to consume weed. They do have some things in common, like ID-ing and prohibiting tobacco use, alcohol use and cannabis sales. The Hotbox has knowledgeable, friendly staff to answer any questions you may have and a range of events, including Nintendo competitions, live music and comedy shows. Owner and long-time cannabis activist Abi Roach, who spoke at the Municipal Licensing and Standards committee last month, isn’t nervous about the future – she believes councillors are actually beginning to come around on weed lounges. On October 2, Ward 20 Councillor Joe Cressy was able to push a motion through the Board of Health to re-open the issue of cannabis lounges, albeit through a back door.

People who want to learn more about cannabis concentrates and dabbing can do so here with the proper accessories. Owner Joanne Baker is adamant about putting comedy at the forefront of her business and keeps a fresh lineup of big names coming through her doors. Special rules Bring your own bud for the class offering; be quiet and respectful. Before students at this airy space get down to downward dog, they can take cannabis-infused tea or puff on cannabis using a top-of-the-line vaporizer that creates an environment with nearly no haze or smell. Students are asked to donate sativa or more uplifting strains of cannabis for a communal puff before class to help stimulate focus and energy.

Ganja Yoga student Antuanette-Gomez says she got hooked after her first class – but not to the cannabis she was already used to consuming. Owner Lu Pancini has been teaching yoga for 12 years and tells NOW she is proud of her family-run business, which also offers Thai Yoga Massage, Thai Massage School and Yoga School.

America’s marijuana policy isn’t funny. It’s racist.

When NBC’s Meet the Press over the weekend held a roundtable about the New York Times Editorial Board’s decision to endorse marijuana legalization, participants seemed to take the issue very lightly – regularly making jokes between a few serious policy points. The chuckles are typical in conversations about marijuana policy. Hillary Clinton got in some jokes about marijuana before answering a similar question at a CNN-hosted town hall in the spring. It’s easy to joke about marijuana policy when the idea of legalization feels more like a new freedom, which might be the case for whiter and wealthier populations. Poorer populations, marijuana policy is much closer to a civil rights issue.

Marijuana isn’t just a drug that they would like to be able to use and carry out in the open. Marijuana criminalization has historically been used to harass and arrest people in minority and poor communities at hugely disproportionate rates. A 2013 report from the American Civil Liberties Union found that, even though white and black people use pot at similar rates, black people are 3.7 times more likely to get arrested for marijuana possession. New York decriminalized marijuana in 1977, but as of 2012 had one of the highest arrest rates for pot possession. The problem: New York law allows arrests for marijuana that’s within public view.

Police officers in New York City regularly used this exception to arrest people, particularly minorities, by getting them to empty their pockets during stop-and-frisk searches and expose marijuana that would otherwise have remained hidden. Because for a large chunk of the US population, marijuana policy is simply no joking matter.
