Radical Acts: The Art of Cheech Marin

Cheech Marin was from a quick-witted family where you had to be on stage to get a word in at the dinner table. Cheech remembers South Central as being easier for him, racially, in a Biography Channel documentary about his life. Father Oscar respected his adult son’s right to make the decision for himself, and Cheech was later granted immunity from federal prosecution and returned to LA. The dope comedy and films of Cheech and Chong that rode a rocket to fame in the 1960s and ’70s, by the 1980s, had played out. Knowing this helps put what would come later into perspective, as Cheech relied on his analytical mind, rapid-fire consciousness, and spirit of personal revolution, to re-find his audience and step from being a performer in a role to that of a guide and leader amidst a complex social and cultural environment.

Born in East LA, is a parable about immigration that nails our current discourse and policies because that’s what Cheech saw around him. It is this inequity that sparked a response from the largest and, as Cheech says, wealthiest generation. Cheech came into the studio at High Times Magazine to be interviewed by David Burkart on a variety of topics. These short video clips provide an insightful understanding of the thought process of Cheech Marin, the man, and the artist, though the art of his own making. Cheech Marin, the artist, teaches us more radical acts, remaining faithful to the craft, and to the inner journey, from a time when many, not just a few, were shot down cold in the streets.

Here we might see in the same frame, Cheech’s escape from stereotypes, labels, typecasting, racial conflicts, cultural restraints, political myopia, the country as a whole, the fog of war, stoner roles, the cops, and finally, as understood through his works and time. Cheech Marin’s cultural legacy is to be included. It may be reviewed and enjoyed through his personal collection and long embrace of Chicano art, documenting the cultural perspective of Americans as a movement and as peoples, at The Cheech Marin Center of the Riverside Art Museum.

How much marijuana can you possess in Massachusetts? Here are the restrictions.

After the passage of a November ballot measure, recreational marijuana is now legal in Massachusetts. While state lawmakers voted to delay the opening of recreational marijuana stores until June 2018 – which still makes it technically illegal to sell marijuana – possessing, consuming and growing marijuana is now allowed under state law. Here’s what you need to know about the law’s limitations, as specified in the text of the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act, before enjoying the benefits of the new law. According to the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act, it is now legal for residents aged 21 and over to possess, use, purchase, process and manufacture up to one ounce of marijuana. Residents, the law states, can possess up to 10 ounces of marijuana in their personal residence; however, any amount over one ounce must be secured by a lock.

The law also allows residents to assist other adults over the age of 21 with marijuana purchase, manufacture, use or possession, and also makes it legal for a Massachusetts resident to give away or transfer up to one ounce of marijuana to another adult. Once Massachusetts residents have their legal marijuana there are some restrictions on where they can use it. The law also specifies that individuals cannot consume or hold marijuana and marijuana accessories on public or private school property where children attend preschool, kindergarten or grades 1-12, or on the property of a correctional facility. The law also has strict restrictions on marijuana usage and motor vehicles. Massachusetts cannabis enthusiasts who choose to grow their own plants will also face restrictions under the Regulation and Taxation of Marijuana Act.

Residents can have up to six marijuana plants for personal use at their primary residence, the law dictates, but a household cannot grow more than 12 total marijuana plants at once. In total, residents may possess up to 10 ounces of marijuana and any marijuana that is cultivated by the plants on their premises at their primary residence.

Marijuana businesses to go before Planning Board

FITCHBURG – Five marijuana businesses looking for approval to sell, cultivate, or process in the city will go before the Planning Board Tuesday night. The public hearings will take place at 6 p.m. at the Fitchburg Fire Department headquarters community room at 33 North St. Existing medical dispensaries Revolutionary Clinics on Oakhill Road and Garden Remedies on Airport Road are seeking site plan review to cultivate and process recreational marijuana. It has one floor to grow medical marijuana and another with a commercial kitchen to manufacture marijuana products.

The company went before the Planning Board a few weeks ago to receive approval to grow on the upper floors of its industrial space, O’Hara said. Garden Remedies has been producing medical marijuana in the city since 2016. He said it received board approval before the city had a medical marijuana ordinance. The board will also consider special permits and site plan review for Colonial Cannabis to open an adult-use retail store on Water Street and medical cultivation and processing businesses for Cypress Tree Management on Westminster Street and Native Sun Wellness on Industrial Road. Special permit approval requires a two-thirds vote from the board, O’Hara said.

Boston-based Cypress Tree Management has plans for a nearly 50,000 square-foot facility at 431 Westminster St., he said. If the businesses receive approval from the Planning Board, O’Hara said, they will be able to move forward with building plans. To open, the businesses will need certification or licensing from the state Department of Public Health for medical marijuana or the Cannabis Control Commission for the sale of recreational marijuana. O’Hara said the Planning Board has already reviewed and approved at least six applicants with marijuana businesses. Applicants have told him that Fitchburg seems to be a good place for the marijuana business.

The reason for this is quite simple – there is a difference in classification between hemp, and between cannabis. Despite the fact that hemp is cannabis, this problem of classification exists. Hemp is anything below 0.3%. They don’t care about height, size, anything else – it’s just the THC factor that comes into play. The CBD oil industry is growing and changing all the time, and with hemp legal to grow, things could change in the near future. Since the most prevalent cannabinoid in hemp is CBD, not THC, we are on the right path. As it stands, we can create CBD oil in the UK; so long as it’s from hemp alone. If CBD oil is portrayed to the public as cannabis, then negative changes will most likely occur to legislation that will hamper the industry massively. This could go one of two ways; a hyper-conservative government could ban all use of CBD oil or hemp. They may go the other way and start moving towards a far more liberal attitude to the use of CBD oil and assorted products. Since hemp is legal in the UK and you can easily go and buy hemp seed oil in the UK, change may come sooner than we are expected here.

Jettison Me To The Paddies

Megan Fox’s only comment on the matter was to agree that, yes indeed, she is very hot. San Jose, CA – Yesterday a stoner ‘discovered’ that Billy Mays had died; seven minutes after his buddy said, ‘Hey, Billy Mays died. Sitting in his living room with two other buddies, hardcore stoner Johnny Blumington was alerted to the fact that Mr. Mays had died when he finally starting paying attention to the news story that had been running on the TV for a half hour. ‘Wow, that Oxiclean guy died,’ he said, to which his buddy Aaron responded, ‘Dude, I just said thatyou’re so stoned. Much laughter was had by all three stoners as they packed another bowl. ‘I was so hungry yoI didn’t even think about smelling the Miracle WhipI didn’t even think about it. Houston, TX – A local stoner attempted suicide upon hearing that ‘MJ’ had died. Harvey Pedophilia was told on the day of Michael Jackson’s death by a buddy that ‘MJ’ had died. Thinking his beloved Mary Jane was dead, this very baked stoner, or stoned baker, proceeded to dive head first out of an open third story window. ‘Hey man,’ his buddy said, ‘don’t hate on Michael.

Netflix cancels pot comedy ‘Disjointed’ after one season

Netflix announced that they would not be bringing back Disjointed for a second season. The show was unusual for Netflix for both portraying the marijuana industry, but also because it was a multi-camera sitcom, which the streaming service had not really tried before. They were even able to attract Academy Award winner Kathy Bates to the project, so things looked good. The show currently holds a 43 out of 100 rating on review aggregator site Metacritic, with many criticizing the show’s lame and predictable jokes that largely revolved around run-of-the-mill marijuana/stoner stereotypes and clich├ęs. Still, Disjointed was one of the few TV shows that portrayed the legal marijuana industry in any way. While meth makers and other drug dealers get glamorized TV portrayals, the cannabis industry has been mostly ignored by studios. So even if Disjointed wasn’t the greatest comedy in the world, it’s still unfortunate that nothing is around to take its place. The studio behind Disjointed says they’re going to try and sell the show to a new home, so there may still be a chance more episodes are made in the future.

The president’s marijuana proposal, unveiled by White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs early Tuesday morning, touts increased tax revenues and the potential to add up to five million jobs in its first year. The proposal needs to pass both the House and Senate, coming at a time when Obama is already trying to sell lawmakers on his $3.6 trillion budget. Gibbs said the president will hold special meetings with top government officials in the coming days to further discuss the plan. If passed, the American people can expect to start buying legal marijuana as early as the fall, Gibbs said. The plan calls for the Food and Drug Administration to have total control of all marijuana in the country. Tax rates still need to be hammered out, bur experts say there could be as much as a 50 percent tax on street value of the drug popular on college campuses around the country. Marijuana would be treated similar to alcohol and tobacco, meaning stores will have to be licensed to sell it. It will also carry an age limit, likely 21 and over. More details of Obama’s pot proposal are expected in the coming days.
