Chelsea Handler’s First Experience Trying Marijuana Edibles – Late Night with Seth Meyers

WeedGeist

The new research, published Monday in the journal JAMA Internal Medicine, finds that deaths associated with the use of opiate drugs fell in 13 states after they legalized medical marijuana. Compared to states with no formal access to marijuana, those that allowed certain patients legal access to cannabis saw a steady drop in opiate-related overdoses that reached 33%, on average, six years after the states’ medical marijuana laws took effect. That apple cart has already been shaken by a growing body of research that suggests marijuana’s psychoactive ingredients may enhance the pain-killing effects of opiate drugs, allowing patients using marijuana for pain to take lower – and less dangerous – doses of opiate medications. In a small study published in 2011, Abrams found that cancer patients taking morphine and oxycodone experienced greater pain relief at lower opiate blood concentrations when a vaporized form of marijuana was added to their drug regimen. He has just begun recruiting for a study that will explore whether the same formulation can reduce pain, inflammation and opiate doses in patients with sickle-cell disease.

Marijuana Math

Naomi and Adam Scott are poised to explore the world of marijuana for NBC. The couple has set up scripted comedy Buds at NBC. The comedy, which received a script commitment, revolves around the day-to-day operations of a marijuana dispensary in Denver, Colo. It marks the first sale for the Parks and Recreation star and his producer-wife under their Gettin’ Rad Productions’ two-year first-look deal with Universal Television. Parks and Recreation’s Joe Mande – also a successful stand-up comedian and Twitter sensation – will pen the script and executive produce alongside Naomi and Adam Scott.

It keeps Scott and Mande in business with the network and studio following next week’s series finale of the veteran comedy starring Amy Poehler. Gettin’ Rad recently teamed with the red-hot Duplass brothers on the Sundance standout The Overnight, which sold to Orchard Films. On the TV side, the company also has four incarnations of Adult Swim’s viral specials Greatest Event in Television History. On the acting side, Scott will wrap up NBC’s Parks and Rec and next appear in Hot Tub Time Machine 2.

Watch John Oliver Blaze Through the Problems with Marijuana Legalization :: Comedy :: Video :: John Oliver :: Paste

The issue of marijuana is like Mark Wahlberg being seen as a serious actor. That’s part of the central thesis of John Oliver’s latest piece on marijuana legalization; it’s something we’ve all grown to accept, but is still fraught with problems. In the case of Wahlberg, it’s films such as Transformers. For legalization, it’s a matter of new state laws about weed use being in serious conflict with existing federal laws about everything from shipping to paying employees of legal dispensaries, to individuals with disabilities being able to use marijuana. Many of those federal laws are decades old and were less strictly enforced under President Obama’s tenure.

Should I Call 911 When My Friends Start Flipping Out On Marijuana?

It seems that just about the time the second joint starts getting passed around the room, the girlfriend of the guy that nobody really wanted there in the first place goes quiet. Her situation is a little suspect, as everyone notices that she keeps feeling her chest from time to time. That’s when the quiet girl, despite knowing deep down inside that she is having some difficulty keeping up with the group’s rotation, decides she is going to try smoking high-powered concentrates for the first time. They will soon regret offering this level of encouragement. As soon as she blows out the hit, she looks as though she has been shot in the heart at close range.

It is at that point when she starts belting out a cornucopia of strange, colorful obscenities and begging for someone, anyone to call 911. Depending on which state a person lives in, calling in the cavalry when someone starts flipping out after consuming too much marijuana can bring nothing but trouble. Since it is impossible to die from a marijuana overdose, and the herb cannot cause any damage to a person’s internal organs, calling 911 for a THC terror trip is really just a waste of time. Sometimes those ever-so-popular cannabis freak-outs and subsequent calls to 911 can lead to hilarity. His video for the song The Leaf, which is a first person account of the time he called 911 following a cannabis-induced panic attack, has left the Internet in stitches.

Allport, who also works as an Associate Producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, told Forbes that he thought he was having a heart attack after smoking weed for the first time. After going through a rather tumotulous experience in an upstairs bathroom, which included a life-or-death battle with a dry tongue, he was lucky enough to reach a 911 dispatcher who understood exactly what he was going through.

‘Disjointed’ Is Like Any Workplace Sitcom

‘Disjointed’ Is Like Any Workplace Sitcom – With More Pot, Sex And Language Set in a medical marijuana dispensary, the big networks all turned the show down. Chuck Lorre is, without question, television’s sitcom king. He created two of today’s top money-making syndicated shows – The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men – and his other hits over the years include Dharma & Greg, Grace Under Fire, Mike & Molly and Mom. Lorre’s new show, Disjointed, co-created with David Javerbaum, premieres Friday on Netflix. The show’s Los Angeles set is a hippy-looking shop filled with psychedelic posters and glass cases displaying actual product.

Lorre describes his latest show, Disjointed, as just a regular workplace comedy, with wacky customers and lovable employees. The family tension in Disjointed is also more literal, deriving partly from the dynamic between Bates’ Earth mother character and her much more corporate son. Bates says she needed no such coaching; the subject matter is partly what drew her to the show. People are watching Netflix stoned with or without our show – by the millions, I would imagine. If the only people who watch us are stoned people who watch Neflix, that’s an enormous audience.

His show Mom, for example, is about a pair of recovering addicts, a mother and daughter. Javerbaum is a former head writer for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and the Broadway play An Act of God.

Comedian Doug Benson tells more than marijuana jokes

Doug Benson releases one album per year, has appeared on numerous TV shows, hosts a popular web series, Getting Doug With High, as well as multiple podcasts, namely Doug Loves Movies, and occasionally stars in movies – like his Super High Me, a documentary in which he smokes marijuana every day for 30 days. All of this is, of course, in addition to doing stand up across the country and throughout the world. We recently caught up with the cannabis connoisseur to hear about his high functioning career. DB: You caught me right before I’m going to be operating a motor vehicle no, I don’t drive high. CP: Charleston’s comedy scene is growing, and there will be many aspiring and professional comics at your show.

CP: You’re known for your crazy hard work ethic, but you generally seem to downplay it. DB: Sometimes I stop and ask myself why I have so many projects going on all the time, and it’s because I enjoy it. If I didn’t like doing one of my five podcasts, I’d stop doing it. If I didn’t enjoy going out on the road, I’d stop. CP: You did some extra work years ago in big-budget films, and you’ve appeared on a number of scripted shows.

DB: If someone wanted to give me a dramatic acting role I would probably do it. It’s call Chronic-Con, and it’s about me trying to get high with people dressed as superheroes at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Podcast: How Gringo director Nash Edgerton made a cannabis comedy, never touched the stuff

While Gringo, a new slapstick comedy out this week via Amazon Studios, rides the well-trod trope of a mega corporation up to no good, there’s a modern and timely twist: they’re manufacturing cannabis pills, called Cannabax, down in Mexico. Gringo is chock-full of Grade-A goofiness – weird diatribes about space exploration, kidnappings gone awry, dirty Mexican slang, awkward office sex – but at its heart is some genuine commentary on the ethics of the exploding cannabis industry, and Big Business’ growing role in it. The film, which stars David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron, was directed by Australian stunt-double-turned-director Nash Edgerton. We caught up with Edgerton to learn more about how he came to direct the film, what he thinks about cannabis legalization, his own history with cannabis and more. For the juicy details, tune in to our conversation with Edgerton, in this week’s episode of the Hash podcast, below.

Marijuana comedy skit

Netflix Orders Marijuana Comedy Series Starring Kathy Bates

TV, making a 20 episode series order for the show that has the veteran skills of Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum at the helm. Disjointed is a stoner comedy based around an L.A. cannabis dispensary. The excellent Kathy Bates will take the lead role as the store owner, managing a group of constantly high employees -undoubtedly the source for ensuing dope centrist humor. Deadline reports that Bates’ character is a long-time campaigner for marijuana legalization, who is taking advantage of the relaxed cannabis laws in California and achieving her ambitions by running a dispensary. This will not be the first time Lorre has acquired the notable talent of Bates for one of his projects; the Oscar-nominated actress earned an Emmy for her guest appearance on Two And A Half Men in 2012. Lorre has found previous success working on various sitcoms, writing several episodes of Roseanne in the early 1990s and cycling through various series before ending up at the helm of the hugely popular Big Bang Theory. Netflix has a growing collection of original sitcoms, such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Grace And Frankie. The network’s open minded attitude towards traditionally controversial subject matter should make it a great fit for a weed orientated show, allowing Lorre more freedom to explore this potentially hilarious context than his usual home on CBS. It should be fun to see Bates take on a lead role in a sitcom and spread her comedic wings within this role as a marijuana matriarch. With Bates on board and the proven comedic expertise from its showrunners, this series has the potential to be something special. With luck, Lorre will be able to land some equally good talent to play the other regulars at Bates’ dispensary, and it will be interesting to see how the showrunner handles the move to a streaming platform like Netflix.

The Tragedy of Stoner Comedy

Fourteen states have effectively decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, and on June 4 Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Police Department announced plans to follow suit in NYC. As marijuana goes mainstream, its media portrayal has likewise softened. In the film, marijuana transforms seemingly normal, upstanding American youth into maniacs similar to the opium fiends of earlier stereotypes. Drugs were everywhere: on the strip, where people dropped microtabs of acid and then painted themselves blue; in middle schools, where young pushers did the work of the Fagin-esque masterminds of the marijuana trade; and in middle-class homes, where the sharing of one joint led a young Don and Betty Draper-esque couple to neglect its newborn in a bathtub with a running faucet, where the tot ineluctably drowned. Their straggly long hair, stoner talk, and constant fiending for the demon weed established the stereotype that prevails, in various permutations, to this day. Of late, the stoner comedy has become more realistic. The movie blended stoner stereotypes and broad humor with blood, gore, and violence. More than likely, the stoner comedies of the future will continue to play up the humor while conveniently overlooking the tragedy at the heart of American marijuana prohibition. Whatever the case, there will be no stoner comedy that deals with the harm inflicted on a family when an adult male breadwinner is sent to state prison for what is essentially a victimless crime. Marijuana prohibition has been the gateway to an exponential expansion of the prison-industrial complex, but that’s a reality silver-screen fantasies will not touch. As with romantic comedies, which give us a skewed view of love, the stoner genre is riddled with distortions and misrepresentations-a bad trip worthy of the worst directors in Hollywood.

Stewart Richlin’s Long Strange Trip To Become a Weed Lawyer

On any given night, past security and down a long corridor emanating a skunky, aromatic haze, attorney Stewart Richlin can be found in the lounge of a cannabis speakeasy comedy club. The people who select themselves into the cannabis community are groovy people who have a nice aura around them. After studying at UCLA and Southwestern Law before becoming an attorney in 1986, Richlin quit his job in 1995 to become a yoga teacher. Without a break between kindergarten and law school, Richlin says he was beginning to feel burned out after taking the bar exam. Though he practiced law for a few years, yoga offered the kind of break he needed and re-inspired his law practice later on. In 2002, Richlin reopened his own law practice, focusing on the then-brand new medical marijuana industry, helping growers and dispensary owners comply with state regulations. Until the implementation of Assembly Bill 266, which requires growers, dispensaries, delivery services, manufacturers and others in the medical marijuana industry to obtain state and city licenses while forcing some to shut down by 2018, when it takes effect, California’s largely unregulated medical marijuana program gave Richlin an opportunity to apply what he learned from yoga to his law practice. L.A. County alone is home to the city of Los Angeles, 88 independent cities and county land, so there are 90 different sets of medical marijuana rules, he says. If the opportunity presents itself, Richlin will also try to make the jury laugh – a little comedy goes a long way in the courtroom, bringing the court and jury down to basic human interaction. It’s part of Richlin’s greater move back into comedy as he prepares for the next stage of his career, which involves writing a TV pilot about opening up a yoga studio.

Police Bust Gift Wrapped Marijuana Delivery

I guess we can expect more of these marijuana Holiday shenanigans. Just a few days ago police in Ohio busted two men with a car full of gift-wrapped weed – I guess they forget to make that shit airtight, the police smelled it as soon as they approached the car. Now police in Colonie, Colorado have a similar story to tell. Colonie police were tipped off by the USPS that a package headed for the Desmond Hotel had a very specific odor coming from it that usually emanates from a green leafy, plant, no not mistletoe – WEED. After getting that tip it was like shooting fish in a barrel for the police. They set up a sting at the hotel and when the David Malchow checked in and went to claim his parcel the cops pounced and busted him. In the package police found several smaller packages of gift-wrapped marijuana. Now I have no idea why someone either living in Colorado or visiting Colorado would need to have weed sent through the mail when they could just head to any of the numerous dispensaries in the area. All in all the bust netted about 17 pounds of weed, and one really, really unhappy guy.

Telling Teenagers the Truth about Smoking Pot

Much of my creative writing starts from things I though of while smoking Pot. My smoking Pot has resulted in a decrease in teem smoking. There is a real correlation with lazy dopers and Pot but I’m not sure if the Pot makes you a lazy doper or if you are a lazy doper type first and are therefore attracted to Pot. If Pot is messing up your life, or you don’t have the self control to use it moderately and appropriately, don’t use Pot. Pot affects different people in different ways and if Pot is having a detrimental effect on you, you should not smoke it. If Pot were legal, many people would switch from alcohol to Pot. If Pot were legal you immediately eliminate the illegal Pot market and get rid of crime associated with Pot money. The Government – Pot has been illegal for so long that no politicians have the political courage to tell the truth about Pot. Law Enforcement – There are a lot of people who make a living fighting Pot who would have to go get a real job if Pot were legalized. Pot Dealers – If Pot were legalized then people making money off of selling Pot illegally would be out of business.

Colorado Retail Marijuana Sales Finally Beat Medical Sales

Sales of legal retail marijuana have topped sales of medical marijuana in Colorado for the first time since the state’s recreational pot shops opened their doors on Jan. 1, according to tax figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue. During the month of July, the state received $838,711 from a 2.9% tax on medical marijuana, meaning that patients spent an estimated $28.9 million at dispensaries. The state meanwhile raked in $2.97 million from a 10% sales tax on retail marijuana, putting those sales at about $29.7 million, according to calculations by the Cannabist. Though that amounts to a less than $1 million gap between retail and medical sales, this is a small victory for champions of legalization who have argued that the experiment will be profitable for the state, as revenues have lagged behind some expectations. If that trend holds for the entire year, it will present state officials with a challenge: How to prod a portion of those medical marijuana users into the retail market where they almost certainly belong. Medical marijuana privileges should be confined to genuine patients, particularly now that the retail option exists, and not to those merely seeking a break on price because the taxes are lower. For the legalization experiment to be a success, it needs to be profitable for the state and lure buyers from the black market, a migration that should be reflected in sales figures. Tvert says that prices of retail marijuana, currently around $35 for 1/8 ounce, are far from finalized. Because there is only data about the first six months of sales in an unprecedented market, conclusions about success or failure are impossible to draw. If retail sales continue to increase, while medical marijuana sales hold steady, expectations of a windfall from legal pot are less likely to go up in smoke.

Harmony Korine Wants to Show His Matthew McConaughey Stoner Comedy The Beach Bum in Theaters Full of Marijuana Smoke

Matthew McConaughey and Snoop Dogg’s new stoner film The Beach Bum will truly be an experience. That’s because director Harmony Korine plans to show it with-bongo drum roll-puffs of marijuana smoke in the air in the theaters. Impressively, the trailblazing auteur has currently secured 30 rooms in which he’ll be able to do so. It is possible in some states, such as California, that have legalized this drug for. We already have about thirty rooms that have accepted. It’s likely though that none of those rooms are in Miami, Florida, where The Beach Bum is filming and where recreational marijuana use is not yet legal. No doubt McConaughey will have an easy time slipping into the mindset of that character as the actor famously lived through a somewhat public depressive marijuana smoking episode. It was the marijuana, bong and pipe that got him into trouble when the cops arrived, who later booked him on suspicion of possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and resisting transportation.

Comedy Central Picks Up Pot Comedy ‘The High Court’ With Doug Benson

Comedy Central has given the green light to The High Court, a new 15-minute strip series from comedian Doug Benson for premiere in 2017. It features Judge Doug as he gets high and rules on real small claims court cases. The concept is loosely born from Benson and JASH’s popular YouTube show, Getting Doug with High. In The High Court, both parties agree in advance to have the case settled as Judge Doug hears both sides and then retires to his chambers with a guest bailiff to get very stoned and deliberate. Actor and marijuana advocate Benson hosts podcasts, Getting Doug with High and Doug Loves Movies. The High Court joins a growing list of pot-themed scripted comedy series including HBO’s High Maintenance, Netflix’s upcoming Chuck Lorre sitcom Disjointed, and MTV’s Mary + Jane. Amazon also recently greenlit marijuana-themed comedy pilot Budding Prospects starring Will Sasso. Benson is repped by manager Bruce Smith and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

Netflix Orders Chuck Lorre and Kathy Bates Pot Comedy

If there’s one constant in this crazy, meaningless world, it’s Netflix throwing money at new projects like they can’t give the dough away fast enough. On Wednesday, the streaming giant ordered to series Disjointed, a new comedy from The Big Bang Theory’s Chuck Lorre set at an L.A.-based pot dispensary. Oscar and Emmy winner Kathy Bates will star as the dispensary’s proprietor. In addition to Bates’ pot-shop owner, the workplace comedy will feature the shop’s three budtenders, Bates’ character’s 20-something-year-old son and the shop’s security guard. Netflix stubs out weed comedy Disjointed – TBI Vision

Netflix has axed marijuana store comedy Disjointed after one season on the platform. The multi-camera comedy series hosts Kathy Bates as a lifelong advocate for legalisation who’s finally living her dream as the owner of an LA cannabis dispensary. Disjointed received a 20-episode first season order at the streamer in 2016, with the first half of the season debuting this past August and the second half premiering in January. Despite its seemingly edgy themes, the sitcom format is closer to creator Chuck Lorre’s other shows such as Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang Theory than most SVOD comedies. Lorre and Daily Show alum David Javerbaum served as writers and executive producers on the series, with Chuck Lorre Productions and Warner Bros. Lorre is also prepping comedy series The Kominsky Method for Netflix, starring Michael Douglas and Alan Arkin.

‘Disjointed’ review: Kathy Bates stars in pot comedy

The writers also play with those conventions, such as incorporating commercial spoofs for pot-themed products, which is probably the cleverest recurring bit the show has to offer. The show veers back to more familiar terrain with the prickly relationship between Bates’ free spirit and her MBA son Travis, who has his own ongoing flirtation with a coworker. TV’s increasingly casual attitude toward pot can be seen in a number of reality shows devoted to the business of medicinal marijuana, as well as its use within premium series.
