Grab your bong and rolling papers as we attempt to recall The Best Stoner Movies of All Time. Stoner movies have made a market of their own beginning in the 1970’s when the original stoner flick hit the big screen. The 1978 pot-loving film Up in Smoke has transitioned from a weeded up memory to a now High Times classic. Sure, more brainless blunt smoking comedies have hit the scene since. Just when we thought James Franco couldn’t outshine himself as the quintessential pothead in Pineapple Express, he makes a comeback in the 2013 film This is the End.

This apocalyptic 420 style story has constant hilarious energy between a large crew of self-indulgent LA actors. After getting super high, Seth Rogen and Jay Baruchel hit up an eccentric James Franco house party. Here Seth struggles to merge his old and new friends as the world goes to complete shit. An enormous hell hole swallows most of the party, leaving the survivors to fight over weed, a milky way, and who’s allowed to jizz in Franco’s place. The fourth in the franchise, titled Last Friday, is in the works for a 2018 release.

So if you have the time, get your munchies ready and watch through these all-time best stoner movies.

Marijuana has moved out of the back alleys and into the open. In some states it’s legal to grow, to sell, to smoke and marijuana could be legalized in a city near you. They live in Colorado, one of two states where it’s legal to smoke pot medically and recreationally. Medical dispensaries are everywhere; people are smoking in private clubs and public festivals. Just decades ago marijuana was a legitimate medication also called cannabis, prescribed by doctors and dispensed by pharmacies, but that all changed in 1930.

For Harry Anslinger, the United States first drug czar, public enemy number one, you guessed it, was marijuana. He got the anti marijuana message out through news reports and then came the film Reefer Madness portraying the users of marijuana as unproductive, and crazed. Marijuana then became illegal in 1937 and by 1970 it was a Schedule I controlled substance. The government was saying it had no medicinal value and had a high potential for abuse. Marijuana is made up of two ingredients: THC which is the psychoactive part that makes you high, and CBD, also called cannabidiol, that scientists think it modulates the electrical and chemical activity in the brain.

Roseanne’s Marijuana Episode Part 1

Highly Hilarious: Top 10 Cannabis Comedians

In honor of this glorious day, I hereby present my list of comics that have advance the cause of marijuana to audiences everywhere and, in the process, made us laugh. One of the official ‘Pot Comics’ working today and the Bongmeister behind the landmark marijuana documentary, ‘Super High Me’ and the theatre piece, The Marijuana-Logues, Doug works all over the world now. Mr. Chappelle may be the greatest comic working these days. A man of many foibles and contradictions who has influenced countless generations of comics, his legend will probably overtake fact.

For many of us, something happened to us, after Mr. Carlin’s transitioned from button-down comic of the Eisenhower era to long-hair free-form artist that we grew to know and love in the late Sixties or early Seventies. Maybe the stoniest comic of all-time who did his set without nary marijuana reference in his act, yet the odor was rampant throughout. His sing-song laid back approach, with emphasis on pronunciation as much as for content, has influenced many new comics. Robin Williams is simply the greatest San Franciscan comic that’s ever been.

There were many African-American comics of the ‘Chitlin’ Circuit where Richard Pryor, Moms Mabley and Flip Wilson and others worked , bringing what we know as marijuana jokes to a broader audience. Buckley earned in the process the very scary title of being Al Capone’s favorite comic. In San Francisco, the comic’s comic is Steven Pearl. There are many more famous comics, who have more money, but for the comics of San Francisco, Steven Pearl was the act we aspired to be like.

An Interview with TJ Miller About His Latest Gig, the First Openly Cannabis-Themed Comedy Tour

He’s the guy from Silicon Valley and Yogi Bear 3D. The Leafly Cannabis Comedy tour kicks off in Seattle at the Crocodile on January 2, with an opening act by Emmett Montgomery. The more mainstream [weed] gets, the more they figure out edibles and regulate them and all that kind of stuffI don’t think they have edibles in Denver anymore, ’cause some kids got into ’em. Nobody gets in a bar fight when everyone’s high. Like the Friday night late showthese are people that have worked all week, they probably went out right after work, it’s doubtful that they even went home and changed.

Like, I’m doing comedy and all that but I’m also sort of partying. Hopefully I’m doing something, this being a cannabis tour. No Yogi Bear 4D! But, y’know, I worked on How to Train Your Dragon, and Big Hero 6, and Gravity FallsI have a very broad audience on purpose, because I believe that life is fundamentally tragic and comedy is one of our best escapes from the harshness of life. That’s the new thing to talk about!

No one’s talkin’ about that on the cannabis tour! That’s the way I’m going to be different. I tell a story or two about my escapades as a very high person. When you’re high, spectacle and things that are super bizarre are fun to just relax into. So that’s the thing, I don’t talk about weed so much as I perform material that’s very fun to watch high.

If everybody’s super high, sometimes it takes them a second to get a joke.

Adam Scott To Produce Marijuana Dispensary Comedy For NBC

The burgeoning Colorado marijuana industry already has spawned several reality/docu-series projects, including TruTV’s Medicine Man pilot. It is now entering the scripted field with Buds, a comedy project bought by NBC for the 2015-16 development cycle. Parks & Recreation co-star Adam Scott is teaming with the departing NBC comedy’s writer Joe Mande on the show, which hails from Gettin’ Rad Productions, Scott’s production company with his producer wife, Naomi Scott. This marks the first sale under the first-look deal Gettin’ Rad inked with Universal TV last fall. Written by writer-comedian Mande, Buds revolves around the day-to-day operations of a marijuana dispensary in Denver, Colorado.

On the feature side, Gettin’ Rad recently produced, alongside the Duplass Brothers, indie The Overnight, which premiered at Sundance and was sold to Orchard Films. In TV, the company has produced four Greatest Event in Television History specials for Adult Swim. As an actor, Scott will next appear in the Parks & Rec series finale and Hot Tub Time Machine 2. Mande, who has 1 million Twitter followers, is with CAA and Mosiac.

Cheech and Chong move on from stoner comedy [Video]

The pro-marijuana crowd took a hit Monday night when counterculture icons Cheech and Chong announced on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Or maybe being able to buy it without having to pretend to be friends with the person selling to you took the appeal away for Cheech. So the creators and stars of such classics as Up in Smoke. Still Smokin may be evolving from something that smells like skunks to something that smells like feet. They also said they’d be getting into importing exotic reptiles and, they’re really playing with fire here, taping and distributing football games without the express written consent of the NFL.

But old habits die hard, and Cheech and Chong will still be blazing in the form of burning leaves without a permit. Now before this goes and harshes anyone’s mellow, rest assured this was just a bit playing up the fact that the kind of humor isn’t as rebellious as it used to be, especially now that former Republican Speaker of the House John Boehner has gotten involved in the weed game.

WEEDSSSHOW. Jan 2018 Welcome.Comedy Vide Show On weed/Marijuana/Cannabis/Ganja. Intense Talk On Weed

High Maintenance: the weed-smoking comedy set to change the face of the webseries

High Maintenance, the webseries created by husband-and-wife team Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair, is not a stoner comedy. An anthology set in the apartments and attic spaces of New York’s creative types, the show focuses on a sprawl of unrelated smokers, all of whom share the same dealer: a cheerful, bearded man simply known as The Guy. Instead, each episode follows the character or group of characters he’s delivering weed to, in the moments leading up to the point of sale, from the cancer sufferer looking to use the munchies to combat appetite suppression, to the homeowners needing to unwind after a exhausting time hosting Airbnb guests. Last month, the streaming site, which has hosted High Maintenance throughout its run, announced a deal to make the show its first original series, providing funding for future episodes. High Maintenance highlights the advantages the webseries has over TV.

Episodes can be as long or short as their creators want them to be, and released when they’re ready. Crucially, unlike the low-budget style of many webseries, High Maintenance looks great, filmed with a hazy dreaminess comparable with the lusher end of TV and independent film. The comic Hannibal Buress turns up in the series’ darkest episode, playing a stand-up who gets shot during one of his performances. Stevens raved about the show in a newspaper column and got in touch about appearing in an episode. The Stevens episode is perhaps the best encapsulation of what High Maintenance is about, not only in its storytelling style – the episode features a warm, expectation-confounding twist – but also in the way it reflects the spread of people who recreationally use weed.

Both Stevens’s character and his wife are affluent, family-driven people, who just happen to enjoy smoking pot, while in other episodes we see The Guy dealing to psychiatrists, doctors, even a cast member of Wicked. Blichfeld and Sinclair argue that High Maintenance is representative of shifting attitudes to the drug. High Maintenance is available to watch now on Vimeo.

Stoner Comedy Pioneer Tommy Chong Turns 80

While 4/20 might be the official ‘unofficial stoner holiday,’ May 24th remains a significant date in marijuana lore in its own right-it’s 1/2 of the legendary comedy duo Cheech and Chong’s birthday. Today especially, is an extra special celebratory day for potheads and marijuana advocates alike, as the stoner comedy pioneer Tommy Chong turns 80. Chong, who has advocated for legal marijuana since his early stoner comedy days, is now beginning to see his dreams come to fruition. By 1965, Chong and his band, Bobby Taylor and The Vancouvers, signed with Gordy Records and recorded their debut eponymous album. After releasing two additional singles, the group broke up after Chong and bandmate Wes Henderson were fired from Motown for failing to acquire green cards to become U.S.

citizens. Chong then returned to Vancouver, British Columbia, to run a couple of local strip joints with his brother. After settling on the name ‘Cheech and Chong,’ the soon-to-be-infamous comedy team released their self-titled debut comedy album in 1971, which was nominated for a Grammy. The duo would go on to release four more Grammy-nominated comedy albums, including Big Bambu, Los Cochinos, Cheech & Chong’s Wedding Album and Sleeping Beauty. He ended up serving 9 months in prison for the endeavor, with many questioning the ethics of the case and whether or not Chong’s status as a stoner comedian caused his ultimate downfall.

In 2012, Chong announced he was suffering from prostate cancer. In 2015, Chong stated that his cancer had returned, this time colorectal. Now, Chong gets to enjoy the fruits of his, and so many other cannabis pioneers’ labors, through his own special brand of weed: Chong’s Choice, which is available in dispensaries throughout several weed-legal states.

Comedy Central Picks Up Pot Comedy ‘The High Court’ With Doug Benson

Comedy Central has given the green light to The High Court, a new 15-minute strip series from comedian Doug Benson for premiere in 2017. It features Judge Doug as he gets high and rules on real small claims court cases. The concept is loosely born from Benson and JASH’s popular YouTube show, Getting Doug with High. In The High Court, both parties agree in advance to have the case settled as Judge Doug hears both sides and then retires to his chambers with a guest bailiff to get very stoned and deliberate. Actor and marijuana advocate Benson hosts podcasts, Getting Doug with High and Doug Loves Movies.

The High Court joins a growing list of pot-themed scripted comedy series including HBO’s High Maintenance, Netflix’s upcoming Chuck Lorre sitcom Disjointed, and MTV’s Mary + Jane. Amazon also recently greenlit marijuana-themed comedy pilot Budding Prospects starring Will Sasso. Benson is repped by manager Bruce Smith and attorney Lev Ginsburg.

Up in smoke: Jeff Sessions intensifies crackdown on marijuana sale

Four days after the recreational sale of cannabis became legal in California, Attorney General Jeff Sessions lifted an Obama-era policy that allowed states to legalize marijuana with minimal federal interference. Memos issued by the Department of Justice under President Barack Obama discouraged the enforcement of federal marijuana laws in states that had legalized the drug. Sessions rescinded this guidance in a memo of his own sent to U.S. attorneys. President of Berkeley Patients Group, or BPG, the longest continuously operating medical cannabis dispensary in the country, said BPG has the support of local and state officials.

California lawmakers across the political spectrum spoke out against Sessions’ memo. Comprehensive regulations about the sale of marijuana are expected to come to Berkeley City Council by April, according to Chakko. Anjali Shrivastava covers academics and administration.

Although medical marijuana is legal in New Jersey - the state started issuing medical marijuana identification cards in 2012 - adult patients currently have greater access to the drug than children. One family recently decided to move from New Jersey to Colorado to ensure their daughter would have access to the liquefied marijuana she uses to stave off potentially fatal seizures. Child marijuana patients in New Jersey are technically allowed to access edible marijuana, but marijuana in this form isn’t generally available at New Jersey dispensaries. Gov. Chris Christie recently rejected a bill that would have permitted families in a similar situation to buy marijuana in other states and transport it home to New Jersey.

Blazing stoners marijuana smoking comedy Ep17Pt2of4

McCarthy is fun in ‘Life of the Party,’ but comedy too infrequently LOL-funny

The latest comedy vehicle for Melissa McCarthy offers an appealing-enough premise: McCarthy plays a suddenly single woman who goes back to college to complete her degree at the same time her daughter is there for her senior year. It also can be quite charming, thanks also to McCarthy. Too often it’s is plagued by weak writing from McCarthy and husband Ben Falcone, who also directs. Full of emotions, Deanna states that it’s great to be back at Dan’s and her alma mater. After a binge at the bookstore for school-spirit gear, Deanna wakes in her dorm room before classes start.

While her roommate, Leonor, is an odd, live-life-in-the-dark type, Deanna immediately hits it off with her daughter’s sorority sisters Amanda, Debbie and Helen. Deanna also finds a rival in the pretty-and-bratty Jennifer, another weak plot element, this one to generate occasional conflict – and a dance-off at a 1980s-themed party. Speaking of parties, at an earlier bash at a fraternity house, Deanna is given a quick makeover by Maddie in the bathroom, indulges in some binge drinking and spends the night with a young man, Jack. Of course, it makes little sense that the handsome, kind-hearted Jack becomes obsessed with Deanna based on their night of passion. McCarthy and Falcone aren’t really in the business of making sensible plot choices.

As penned by them and performed by McCarthy, Deanna is a very likeable heroine, and her relationship with her daughter is very sweet. Rated: PG-13 for sexual material, drug content and partying.

The 50 Best Movies To Watch High

As a tribute to that activity, the experts at Honest Marijuana have put together a list of the 50 best movies to watch high. Inception is one of those movies that will blow your mind when you’re completely lucid. The Matrix trilogy is great to watch high, not for the quality of the movies, necessarily, but for the sheer wow-factor of the special effects. This movie is so absurd that the only way to truly enjoy it is to watch it high. We don’t have a lot of the stereotypical stoner movies on our list, but Up In Smoke is a must-see for all of you who want to know about weed culture before cannabis was legal. 2001: A Space Odyssey is one of those movies that can really only be understood while you’re high as a kite.

The Fountain is one of those movies that you can only understand when you’re high. This movie is an experience in itself, but it’s even better shared with friends who are all high. Trippy costumes by Jean-Paul Gaultier, crazy space action, and some great lines by Bruce Willis and Chris Tucker make this one of our go-to movies to watch high. Don’t let the trauma of high school dodgeball color your view of this hilarious movie. There’s very little humor in the movie Brazil, but the visuals alone are enough to blow your mind whether you’re sober or high.

We like watching this movie while we’re high because of all the crazy action.

Denver Post: Mutiny Seeks Marijuana Consumption Permit

By JON MURRAY of DENVER POST. For Mutiny Information Cafe on Denver’s South Broadway strip, the city’s recently passed social marijuana use voter initiative could allow for once-a-month Saturday night gatherings that mix vaping, edibles and dancing. Other businesses are considering the possibilities opened up by the successful ballot measure, ranging from one-off events to allowing pot consumption areas on-site daily. The owner of a yoga and spinning studio on East Colfax is mulling the idea of occasional special events that might couple marijuana with meditation or Thai massage. Before The Rhythm Revolution’s Jasmine Anderson decides whether to even seek a new marijuana consumption permit, she – like others whose interest is piqued – wants to see more details about how it will work.

That is the biggest question surrounding Initiative 300, which 53.6 percent of Denver voters approved Nov. 8. The city’s Department of Excise and Licenses has only begun sorting through a multitude of issues – from legal to regulatory to pragmatic – that will determine what the first-of-its-kind marijuana social use permit program looks like.

Why Hollywood And Marijuana Maintain A Stunted Flirtation

We’re four months into legal recreational marijuana in California and we’ve already seen a large ripple effect through the state, including expunging people’s marijuana convictions, exploring marijuana banks and lounges, and celebrities touting its benefits. As a collective, Hollywood hasn’t totally embraced marijuana. Stars remain at a distance from promoting any marijuana product and brand, as stigmas still surround cannabis. Aside from high heavyweights like Snoop Dogg, Willie Nelson and Whoopi Goldberg, who have been in the business of bud for a while, Hollywood has largely stayed away. MedMen is still struggling to sign an A-lister to front its growing national chain of dispensaries, while digital platform 420TV – founded by ex-WME agent Alex Nahai with an MTV DJ Quddus-hosted show and a comedy by former Simpsons animator David Silverman – continues searching for advertisers to sponsor it.

Some believe the movements of cannabis as a luxe product and wellness brand will change opinions in Hollywood. Until that normalization takes hold, it looks like the stars and the leaf won’t be uniting anytime soon.

Should I Call 911 When My Friends Start Flipping Out On Marijuana?

It seems that just about the time the second joint starts getting passed around the room, the girlfriend of the guy that nobody really wanted there in the first place goes quiet. Her situation is a little suspect, as everyone notices that she keeps feeling her chest from time to time. That’s when the quiet girl, despite knowing deep down inside that she is having some difficulty keeping up with the group’s rotation, decides she is going to try smoking high-powered concentrates for the first time. They will soon regret offering this level of encouragement. As soon as she blows out the hit, she looks as though she has been shot in the heart at close range.

It is at that point when she starts belting out a cornucopia of strange, colorful obscenities and begging for someone, anyone to call 911. Depending on which state a person lives in, calling in the cavalry when someone starts flipping out after consuming too much marijuana can bring nothing but trouble. Since it is impossible to die from a marijuana overdose, and the herb cannot cause any damage to a person’s internal organs, calling 911 for a THC terror trip is really just a waste of time. Sometimes those ever-so-popular cannabis freak-outs and subsequent calls to 911 can lead to hilarity. His video for the song The Leaf, which is a first person account of the time he called 911 following a cannabis-induced panic attack, has left the Internet in stitches.

Allport, who also works as an Associate Producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, told Forbes that he thought he was having a heart attack after smoking weed for the first time. After going through a rather tumotulous experience in an upstairs bathroom, which included a life-or-death battle with a dry tongue, he was lucky enough to reach a 911 dispatcher who understood exactly what he was going through.

‘Disjointed’ Is Like Any Workplace Sitcom – With More Pot, Sex And Language Set in a medical marijuana dispensary, the big networks all turned the show down. Chuck Lorre is, without question, television’s sitcom king. He created two of today’s top money-making syndicated shows – The Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men – and his other hits over the years include Dharma & Greg, Grace Under Fire, Mike & Molly and Mom. Lorre’s new show, Disjointed, co-created with David Javerbaum, premieres Friday on Netflix. The show’s Los Angeles set is a hippy-looking shop filled with psychedelic posters and glass cases displaying actual product.

Lorre describes his latest show, Disjointed, as just a regular workplace comedy, with wacky customers and lovable employees. The family tension in Disjointed is also more literal, deriving partly from the dynamic between Bates’ Earth mother character and her much more corporate son. Bates says she needed no such coaching; the subject matter is partly what drew her to the show. People are watching Netflix stoned with or without our show – by the millions, I would imagine. If the only people who watch us are stoned people who watch Neflix, that’s an enormous audience.

His show Mom, for example, is about a pair of recovering addicts, a mother and daughter. Javerbaum is a former head writer for Comedy Central’s The Daily Show and the Broadway play An Act of God.

Comedian Doug Benson tells more than marijuana jokes

Doug Benson releases one album per year, has appeared on numerous TV shows, hosts a popular web series, Getting Doug With High, as well as multiple podcasts, namely Doug Loves Movies, and occasionally stars in movies – like his Super High Me, a documentary in which he smokes marijuana every day for 30 days. All of this is, of course, in addition to doing stand up across the country and throughout the world. We recently caught up with the cannabis connoisseur to hear about his high functioning career. DB: You caught me right before I’m going to be operating a motor vehicle no, I don’t drive high. CP: Charleston’s comedy scene is growing, and there will be many aspiring and professional comics at your show.

CP: You’re known for your crazy hard work ethic, but you generally seem to downplay it. DB: Sometimes I stop and ask myself why I have so many projects going on all the time, and it’s because I enjoy it. If I didn’t like doing one of my five podcasts, I’d stop doing it. If I didn’t enjoy going out on the road, I’d stop. CP: You did some extra work years ago in big-budget films, and you’ve appeared on a number of scripted shows.

DB: If someone wanted to give me a dramatic acting role I would probably do it. It’s call Chronic-Con, and it’s about me trying to get high with people dressed as superheroes at Comic-Con in San Diego.

Podcast: How Gringo director Nash Edgerton made a cannabis comedy, never touched the stuff

While Gringo, a new slapstick comedy out this week via Amazon Studios, rides the well-trod trope of a mega corporation up to no good, there’s a modern and timely twist: they’re manufacturing cannabis pills, called Cannabax, down in Mexico. Gringo is chock-full of Grade-A goofiness – weird diatribes about space exploration, kidnappings gone awry, dirty Mexican slang, awkward office sex – but at its heart is some genuine commentary on the ethics of the exploding cannabis industry, and Big Business’ growing role in it. The film, which stars David Oyelowo and Charlize Theron, was directed by Australian stunt-double-turned-director Nash Edgerton. We caught up with Edgerton to learn more about how he came to direct the film, what he thinks about cannabis legalization, his own history with cannabis and more. For the juicy details, tune in to our conversation with Edgerton, in this week’s episode of the Hash podcast, below.

Killer Marijuana Movies, Anti-Marijuana PSAs, and Marijuana Comedy for Fun & Holidays

At a weekend party, we ate marijuana medibles and everybody was so high it was like we were tripping. What really made the night great was we kept finding incredible marijuana movies, stupid-funny commercials made against marijuana, and marijuana comedy. Some of these marijuana videos are only a couple of minutes long, but a few are full-length. What makes the anti-marijuana commercials so laugh-worthy is that they were meant to be serious. The people who made them actually believed the negative shit they were saying about marijuana in these videos. I suggest you inhale your favorite buds or dabs, or eat some potent medibles, put YouTube onto your wide-screen television, and get ready to laugh!!!

Marijuana for RSD

While it has given me new life, I also understand that it isn’t for everybody. You do not have access to any medical marijuana dispensaries. Never purchase marijuana from a street dealer!!!! Dispensaries provide clean marijuana and you can be confident that it wasn’t tainted with anything you wouldn’t want to put in your body. You believe that your doctor will support your decision. Although two of my physicians have not discouraged me from medicating with marijuana, they don’t necessarily support it either. One understands that it is my only choice because my body reacts so badly to prescription pain.

Kevin Smith Creates His Own

Smith wrote, directed, and stars in the project, along with Donnel Rawlings, Kristin Bauer van Straten, and Frankie Shaw. FremantleMedia North America and Starstream Media produced the project. The project joins what is now officially a glut of in-production television comedies set in the world of marijuana and especially dispensaries. Look forward to more networks and streaming services announcing their own cannabis dispensary workplace comedies, as apparently no one will rest until literally every single aspect of the business is mined in excruciating detail.

Best Stoner Comedy Movies

The stoner comedy genre has always been a voice on political times – perhaps an apathetic, lackadaisical voice, yet nonetheless, a voice. These films have plenty to offer stoned and non-stoned viewers alike. In the counterculture of the late ’70s, they set the tone for the rest of the stoner comedy genre to follow suit. As they bumble and swerve their way down the road, discussing inanities and fleeing cops, they influence entire generations of future stoners, and stoner films, to come. In a word, he became the symbol of the ’80s stoner. One of the few stoner comedies that does not revolve around marijuana, this 1989 film follows perpetual slackers Bill and Ted as they travel through time to learn about history for a high school history presentation. The film refueled the stoner comedy genre of the ’90s by first introducing the world to Matthew McConaughey as party fiend David Wooderson. By showing us the truth in suburban, middle-class banality – heavily influenced by stoner culture – Kevin Smith was able to launch his career with this low-budget classic. In the first film of this series, we follow unemployed stoners Smokey and Craig for the duration of a day as they smoke their entire stash and have to figure out a plot to pay back the money to their dealer. It also became the genre’s archetype for stoner buddy films made over the past 10 years.

Chicago USA

Because of the thousands of people like Rubén, McDonald’s had to change their coffee stirrer from a little spoon on a long stem because people like Rubén used it to snort coke, to a flat paddle and later a small straw. Anyway, thanks to Rubén, I attended my first rock concert. Led Zeppelin came to Chicago in January of 1975 and word was out that all the tickets would sell out immediately. We went to old Chicago Stadium box office about two hours before it opened at 10:00 a.m. We didn’t want to oversleep the time of the first ticket sales, so we stayed up all night drinking wine. When we arrived at the ticket office at 8:00 a.m., we were tired, but determined to obtain tickets. Rubén collected our ticket money and ran toward the Stadium like a deranged lunatic. Several policemen tried to stop him, but he dodged them, jumped onto the hood of their unmarked police car, then to the car roof, before leaping to the front of the ticket line. We waited patiently for him in my Firebird that was parked a block away, but within view of the ticket office. About four hours later, Rubén emerged from the ticket office with six concert tickets! We were going to see Led Zeppelin in concert! The last time I saw Rubén was at that Led Zeppelin concert, partying, getting high, and bouncing his head to the music.

False representations: Media portrayal of marijuana

The media consistently represents marijuana as a dangerous substance that leads to issues with psychological addiction, drug lords, mental problems and inevitable abuse of other drugs. The media paints marijuana as a drug that will inevitably lead to the destruction of lives, instead of as a viable recreational substance with potentially positive health benefits. As a recreational drug, marijuana is less dangerous than tobacco and alcohol. Last year, about 25 million Americans smoked marijuana. More than 14 million Americans smoke marijuana on a regular basis, according to the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Medical use of marijuana relies on the effects of two cannabinoids, THC and CBD. THC bolsters appetite and decreases nausea, pain and inflammation. Despite similar rates of marijuana use between blacks and whites, blacks are far more likely to be arrested for marijuana-related offenses. According to a March Pew Research Center survey, about 48 percent of adults have tried marijuana, which is a record high for the drug. In order to overcome these stigmas and stand a chance at legalization or decriminalization, we need more diverse and more accurate representations of marijuana. After his month-long cleanse, he smokes marijuana every day for a month straight to test its long-term effects.

EDITORIAL: Delay opening day for recreational marijuana

Hold on, recreational marijuana lovers, the state might not be going to pot just yet. While the Cannabis Control Commission begins public hearings concerning its proposed guidelines to regulate this new industry, two influential groups have asked that panel to delay the availability of everyday marijuana or strictly curtail how it can be sold. The commission, which remains committed to allowing legal marijuana sales on July 1, must vote on changes to its draft proposal before filing its final regulations by March 9, ahead of the March 15 statutory deadline. The alliance believes the draft regulations will make marijuana more accessible to underage consumers, contribute to pot’s black market and exacerbate health disparities in economically distressed communities. According to the State House News Service, in a message to its supporters, the alliance urged the state to postpone the opening of retail marijuana outlets pending a thorough review of the commission’s policies. Medical marijuana dispensary owners, many of whom will likely enter the legalized-pot industry, also present valid arguments. They point out that states that allow recreational marijuana limit its sale to brick-and-mortar stores. Legalized pot supporters will say medical marijuana owners want to limit the competition, which is true. Better to delay the opening of pot shops now to avoid future legal roadblocks. Given all these 11th-hour uncertainties, the prudent course should be to postpone recreational pot’s July 1 opening day.

Harvard Health Publishing

There are few subjects that can stir up stronger emotions among doctors, scientists, researchers, policy makers, and the public than medical marijuana. Marijuana is currently legal, on the state level, in 29 states, and in Washington, DC. It is still illegal from the federal government’s perspective. The Obama administration did not make prosecuting medical marijuana even a minor priority. About 85% of Americans support legalizing medical marijuana, and it is estimated that at least several million Americans currently use it. Marijuana itself has more than 100 active components. One particular form of childhood epilepsy called Dravet syndrome is almost impossible to control, but responds dramatically to a CBD-dominant strain of marijuana called Charlotte’s Web. The most common use for medical marijuana in the United States is for pain control. While marijuana isn’t strong enough for severe pain, it is quite effective for the chronic pain that plagues millions of Americans, especially as they age. Part of its allure is that it is clearly safer than opiates and it can take the place of NSAIDs such as Advil or Aleve, if people can’t take them due to problems with their kidneys or ulcers or GERD. In particular, marijuana appears to ease the pain of multiple sclerosis, and nerve pain in general. Medical marijuana is also reported to help patients suffering from pain and wasting syndrome associated with HIV, as well as irritable bowel syndrome and Crohn’s disease.

Comparing marijuana to fentanyl is social conservatism without a clue: Robyn Urback

The majestically dumb comments Conservative MP Peter Kent made about marijuana earlier this week suggest that the Tories’ re-branding efforts are not going particularly smoothly. Inconclusive, but worth read if you share concerns about young children, home-grown marijuana, home-made eatables. The last Conservative MP to make such outlandish rhetorical flourishes about marijuana – Julian Fantino, who compared weed to murder – went on to head a medical marijuana company. The best-case scenario here is that Kent is clumsily trying to appeal to the roughly one-third of Canadians who have reservations about legalized marijuana. The Conservatives have long taken very weird, hyperbolic positions when it comes to marijuana. In 2015, when the Supreme Court ruled that medical marijuana users could consume pot in ways other than smoking it – thus allowing for oils, teas, consumables, etc. Previous federal regulations only allowed for medical marijuana to be sold dried, meaning that lung cancer sufferers and children with epilepsy, for example, basically had to smoke weed if they wanted medical marijuana relief. In 2015, the Supreme Court struck down the regulation that medical marijuana be sold dried. Which, on the one hand, is fine: if the Conservatives want to double down on social conservatism – at least as it relates to marijuana – all the power to them. The problem is that, with his comments, Kent has presented them as socially conservative without a clue.

Marijuana Stand-Up Comedy – Tere Joyce Last Comic Standing

Romantic Comedy Movies for Marijuana

Relationships are a big part of stoner comedies and the common theme is the friction between men and women regarding pot use. As marijuana use in America continues to come out into the open, a slew of movies has examined this romantic dynamic, shaping popular discourse and entertaining stoners and non-stoners alike. In Half Baked, Dave Chappelle’s love interest, Mary Jane, doesn’t approve of his ganja smoking, which forces him to choose between his two lady loves. In Road Trip, Smart is the sexy co-ed who gets in between Breckin Meyer and his out-of-state girlfriend. The more mature the movie, the more likely marijuana is there to create tension between the characters. In order to appeal to Katherine Heigl’s Alison in Knocked Up, Seth Rogen’s Ben Stone has to distance himself from his stoner friends. Other films where pot plays a leading role include Van Wilder, where Ryan Reynolds’ campus party animal character woos Tara Reid, and American Beauty, where Kevin Spacey’s Lester rediscovers pot, to the consternation of his adulterous wife Carolyn. More recently, marijuana has a negative effect on Lyle and Nina in the Brooklyn indie Newlyweeds. Sometimes it’s better when weed plays a neutral role in movies. One of the top-grossing stoner films of all time, We’re the Millers, features Jason Sudeikis as a Denver pot dealer who gets ripped off and has to pay his connection by smuggling an RV stuffed with mota from Mexico into the U.S. Jennifer Aniston’s stripper character Rose comes along for the ride.

Judge Doobie: on the set of The High Court with Doug Benson

When visiting the set of the new Comedy Central series The High Court with Doug Benson – a parody of daytime courtroom shows such as Judge Judy – the thing that stood out was the ventilation system designed to filter out smoke. Benson, a standup comic best known for his podcast Getting Doug with High and the documentary Super High Me, is the drug-fueled mind behind the new series. He’s made a substantial comedy career out of embracing marijuana culture at a time when weed is the most socially acceptable it’s ever been, and on the verge of being legal in California. At first glance, one wouldn’t even guess that anything remarkable was afoot on the set, save for the generally sleepy faces of Benson and this episode’s guest bailiff, Brandon Wardell. Any fantasies of a free contact high disappear thanks to that damn ventilation system. Each of the 20 first season episodes of the High Court is a scant 15 minutes long, making it feel more like a deep cut Adult Swim show than the standard Comedy Central fare. After an uninterrupted 15-minute take in the courtroom, Benson, Wardell and Kellison get together to discuss what they might have missed and what they can pick up. Benson and Wardell are as confused about the particulars of the case as I am, though they have a medicinal reason for it. The High Court is not the first, nor will it be the last, TV show to center itself around conspicuous consumption of marijuana. The High Court with Doug Benson starts at midnight tonight ET on Comedy Central.
