420 Day 2018 in San Francisco

Today, hundreds of thousands of stoners across the globe celebrate April 20th as a cannabis Christmas. In the United States, 420 Day San Francisco throws a party unlike any other festival in the world, just 20 miles away from the Waldos’ old hangout. 420 Day San Francisco boasts a slew of 420 Day parties like 420 Celebration on Hippie Hill. Located in Golden Gate Park, Hippie Hill provides potheads with scenic and psychedelic views while offering them a chance to sit in drum circles and let the wind blow through their hair. More active reefer regulars blaze trails to 420 Day celebrations like San Jose HempCon, arguably America’s largest medical marijuana show. Other smoky 420 Day events include WOMP Island 420 Music Festival, where crowds burn doobies and sway to chill funk, hip-hop, and rap music.

The most fitting way to honor the innovative high school students from San Rafael is to smoke up, down, and all around San Francisco.

The Mystery of Love & Sex

They’re in college and have been close friends since they were nine. As the play opens, Lucinda and Howard have arrived at college for a visit with their daughter. When Charlotte tells them that her long friendship with Jonny is taking a romantic turn, they don’t take it too well. These questions are among the many mysteries of love and sex that Bathsheba Doran’s new play takes on. Deeply insightful and very funny, the play captures both the aimless yet headstrong swagger of the twentysomethings, as well as the guarded, practiced veneer of their parents.

We will find that all four are carrying secrets and resentments that affect the others. The answer they’ll all find eventually is that the path forward is not always the one right in front of you. The play was directed by Sam Gold, whom LCT audiences know from The Coward at LCT3 and also from his many productions on and off-Broadway including The Real Thing and Fun Home.

204 Augusta Avenue, Kensington Market, Toronto, ON

If you smoke marijuana and wants to chill with people, you’re at the right place. I love this place! We stumbled upon Hot Box Cafe a year ago visiting Kensington market. A total gem located inside Kensington Market in Toronto. If you’re in Toronto this is a place you would want to check out at least once for the experience.

Place was crowded but staff continued to accept more people without informing them that there is no actual space to sit or put your things down. Decent place to sit and smoke with friends if its cold out and you’re in the neighborhood. I visited the Hot Box Cafe as a non-smoker, hanging out this Sunday just past with a visitor to Toronto who had visited this place at its Baldwin Street location and liked it. I like the place, too, simply as a place to hang out if you want to smoke a joint, or hang out with people who do. I’d not go back unless I was with someone who wanted to smoke a joint, but it struck me as a comfortable and safe place to do so.

Despite seeming run-down, the place has a certain charm. Often they play chill beats from various genres but sometimes they play shitty dubstep/ popular music For what it is, its a nice place. Not a place I will be frequenting but I am not adverse to visiting again either.

Top 11 Marijuana Documentaries

UPDATED WITH NEW LINKS. These are by far some of the best marijuana documentaries to date. All of them are eye-opening and most of them make a serious case for the legalization of marijuana and/or medical marijuana. Except for Reefer Madness, I threw that in for a different reason. Sit back, spark a fat one up, and get ready to have your mind blown.

Reefer Madness – A great look at the scare tactics used against marijuana. For the last two I couldn’t find anywhere online to watch, but they are both very good. You can probably rent it through Netflix or something like that. Waiting to Inhale covers medical marijuana and the life of Robert Randall, the first medical marijuana patient in the United States. He won a court case back in the 1976 to use cannabis on the basis of medical necessity for his glaucoma.

Not only did he receive a monthly supply of marijuana, it was supplied by none other than the federal government. Not many people know, but there was a federally run medical marijuana program that ran for only a few years that started with his victorious court case in 1976. In all there were 13 that received medical marijuana, and of those 13, the ones still living still receive that marijuana to this day legally.

Top 10 Good Movies About Addiction

It follows the frenetic, spiraling demise of three Coney Island heroin junkies and a woman addicted to diet pills, in what has been lauded as the most accurate portrayal of addiction ever made. The strobe-like filming melts its viewers into what feels like a bad acid trip, as the characters’ simple dreams-a dress shop, a TV spot, a nest egg-slip further and further away. Jared Leto and Jennifer Connelly star as the addicts whose hopes of a big score are slowly, painfully chipped away. Connelly and Leto’s initially sweet young love soon decays into prostitution and jail time. Ellen Burstyn’s Oscar-nominated role as Leto’s elderly mother begins with a simple dream of being on her favorite television show; hope morphs into obsession and eventually into a pill-fueled hallucinatory nightmare in which her household appliances are closing in on her.

Where Requiem for a Dream never cracks a smile, Trainspotting is one seedy, yellow-toothed grin. Irreverent and chock-full of stellar performances, Danny Boyle’s early film documents the lives of a group of young Scottish heroin addicts. An emaciated, punked-out Ewan McGregor stars as the blue-collar Renton, who steals from his mother in order to feed his habit.

Top Canadian Marijuana Lounges – The Chill Bud

One of few marijuana lounges I have had the pleasure of visiting in Canada, and it did not disappoint. Set up, chill out and enjoy the view of West Hastings street while you toke. Conveniently located beside the 7,500 square foot Cannabis Culture Superstore, you can pick up a new piece and test it out at the vapor lounge. They claim to be the largest, coolest and greatest vapor lounge in Toronto, warmly welcoming any medical cannabis users, cannabis enthusiasts and activists alike. Besides the tasty treats and cool beverages, they offer some pretty awesome live entertainment.

Because you should be able to toke while you enjoy some local stand-up comedy. Probably the newest vapor lounge in Canada, BuzzOn took up shop in the nation’s capital on 4.20.2015. They are operating one of the only vape lounges in Ottawa and offer some live stand-up comedy on Saturday nights. Located about 2 blocks from Lake Ontario, this aptly named vapor lounge is one of many in the Toronto area. The Hot Box Cafe has a Arizer V-Tower on every table.

Rotten Tomatoes

You’re always trying as a film reviewer to rationalise or explain why you might like or dislike a particular film. In spite of our best efforts, there are always some films whose appeal is hard to pin down. Saving Grace is one of those films, like so many British comedies, which you enjoy almost in spite of yourself. You certainly wouldn’t advertise it as one of your favourite films if the topic came up in conversation. In amongst its flaws there is genuine enjoyment to be had, even if it is slightly embarrassing for so-called film buffs to admit it.

The film has a familiar stock of British dramatic and character actors, making it feel like the sort of work people take in between series of Midsummer Murders. Bill Bailey, who also appears in Hot Fuzz, turns up for a brief cameo as a drug dealer and almost steals the entire film. On this basis, you would expect Saving Grace to be a flimsy blancmange of a film, barely hanging together on the strength of a few famous faces. There is no more damning criticism of any film, let alone a comedy, to say that it would be improved if watched through a cloud of illegal chemicals. For all his frequent concessions to cliché and sentimentality, Cole has a good track record with making films which play to a female audience, and which are genuinely about woman rather than simply having women in them.

The real proof of the film’s steadiness of tone and belief in the central story comes in the scene involving the two elderly ladies in the post office, who in a previous scene accidentally drank some of Grace’s hemp after mistaking it for tea. You couldn’t argue that Saving Grace was a great film, or indeed a very good film.

Satire: The Real Problem With Legalizing Marijuana – Langley Today

Still others dismiss the idea of charging people with a crime for the recreational use of marijuana as just one more absurd and failed part of the war on drugs. Those opposed to legalizing marijuana talk about it being a ‘gateway’ drug that eventually leads users to harder, more dangerous drugs like crack cocaine. Some talk about safety issues related to things like smoking marijuana while driving while others decry what they see as the road to addiction. The only real difference is that the marijuana pictures will be of people freaking out as they search frantically for chocolate chip cookies and potato chips after smoking a joint. University campuses will be aflame with protest that marijuana is not permitted in the classroom and the cost subsidized by government and AdBusters will protest the commercialization of Mother Nature.

People Against Marijuana will form and begin a concerted campaign against the smoking of marijuana. This will not be the same people as those currently opposed to legalizing marijuana. PAM will lobby provincial and federal governments for new laws restricting the use of marijuana in various public locations. They’ll start with the workplace and then move to ban smoking marijuana in malls and parks. Eventually, PAM will be successful at getting government to ban marijuana from rock concerts.

Marijuana Farming IndustryMarijuana will fall out of favour; more and more people will quit resulting in declining sales which will undermine the marijuana farming industry. Eventually, all of the fun of tokin’ with a few friends will be lost as marijuana users stand shivering outside in winter where the smokers used to stand.

Bill Hicks – Mandatory Marijuana

Study: Millions Of Americans Can Buy Marijuana Online, And The Demand Has Never Been Higher

From 2005 to 2017 marijuana shopping searches nearly tripled. A new study, led by San Diego State University Graduate School of Public Health associate research professor John W. Ayers, demonstrates how easy it is for Americans to purchase marijuana online. Searches were also geotagged by state, and the study analyzed search activity in almost every American State. Study co-author, Mark Dredze, told Science Daily the following.

From 2005 to 2017, marijuana shopping searches in the United States nearly tripled, peaking at 2.4 million searches in June 2017. The search volume was highest in Colorado, Washington, Oregon, and Nevada. The overall annual growth-rate for marijuana shopping searches, researchers found, was significantly positive since 2005, in all studied states, bar Alabama and Mississippi. This, authors assert, suggests a growing demand across the nation. Forty-one percent of all monitored search results linked to retailers selling marijuana.

Retailers occupied 50 percent of the first page of Google search results. For some searches, all links on the first page of Google were pointing to online marijuana retailers. State and local tax revenue – some of which could be used to fund public health programs – could be negatively impacted.

Chilean Fisherman Finds an “Underwater Field of Marijuana”?

I’m no botanist, but unless a field of marijuana was insulated by a sand bar and within a tent, I highly doubt marijuana could grow underwater because plants need sun to grow. Considering seaweed and other ocean things grow in the water, perhaps weed growing in the bottom of ocean is just as feasible as Finding Nemo. The fisherman is believed to have been fishing for turbot when he caught unidentified vegetation in his net, which was later identified by marine biologists at the Chilean Aquaculture Centre as a strain of cannabis sativa. The strain has been affectionately named ‘Amigo de pescador’ by locals, which roughly translates to Fisherman’s Friend in English. Research suggests that a naturally occurring genetic defect in the plant, coupled with small hydrothermal vents in the proximity and epipelagic location, have created serendipitous growing conditions that you wouldn’t find anywhere in nature and would be difficult to reproduce artificially.

I have no idea what that means or if it’s really possible, but it sounds cool and scientific. I’m assured by my more familiar peers that the levels of THC aren’t particularly high but the plants do produce female flowers. So unless he hides from the internet, this is likely a fake.

Lawmakers In Illinois Embrace Medical Marijuana As An Opioid Alternative

A painkiller prescription could become a ticket for medical marijuana in Illinois. Lawmakers there passed a bill making anyone with a prescription for opioids eligible for its medical cannabis program. With this move, Illinois joins a growing number of states turning to legal cannabis in the fight against painkiller addiction. The Alternatives to Opioids Act would allow millions of patients to apply for temporary access to the state’s existing medical cannabis pilot program. The bill, which passed on May 31st, is now awaiting Republican Gov.

Bruce Rauner’s signature. Though the bill has bipartisan support, marijuana advocates have some doubts whether he’ll sign it, given his past opposition to medical cannabis. Lawmakers in several states have taken action to initiate or expand their medical marijuana programs in light of the opioid crisis. Among them, in Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal signed a law adding PTSD and intractable pain to the list of conditions covered in its medical marijuana program in May.

Robert Schimmel: Medical Marijuana

MarijuanaDoctors.com Airs First Marijuana Television Commercial Ever Shown on a “Major Network”

Securing the airtime for our commercial on a major network was extremely difficult and at the same time, extremely satisfying. The spot began airing in New Jersey and is believed to be the first time that any major television network in the U.S. has allowed a commercial addressing the controversial subject matter and advertising the first ever medical marijuana service. MarijuanaDoctors.com draws this parallel in an attempt to prove the severity of consulting physicians in order to obtain medical marijuana for terminal & debilitating medical conditions where the doctor may recommend that the benefits of medical marijuana outweigh the risks of in order to improve a patients overall health. According to the company’s website, MarijuanaDoctors.com seeks to help patients with documented medical conditions, such as HIV/AIDS, cancer, chronic pain or any other ailment that is approved by their state of residence as a qualifying medical condition for cannabis, locate and book appointments with licensed doctors who are willing to recommend marijuana as a treatment for their ailments.

The company does not promote the casual or recreational use of marijuana or any other prescription medication. The company condones only the use of marijuana as a medication for recognized ailments in accordance with state law, as it believes it is a proven treatment for many medical conditions. 20 states and Washington, DC have legalized medical marijuana for specific terminal and debilitating conditions. MarijuanaDoctors.com was founded as the trusted gateway for patients searching for medical marijuana treatment in legal medical marijuana states. The company provides patients visibility and transparency in selecting a doctor and setting an appointment for a medical marijuana evaluation including detailed profile information, scheduling information, and ratings and reviews. MD understands the uncertainty associated with the process and that medical marijuana is often the only effective treatment for many ailments for which traditional medicine provides little relief or is accompanied by uncomfortable and dangerous side effects.

MD is dedicated to legitimizing the process for the booking and selection of medical marijuana doctors by standardizing the criteria and selection process for doctors allowed to join the company’s trusted network of quality physicians. MD also focuses on providing comprehensive scheduling and marketing services for doctors that are both already established medical marijuana physicians and those looking to expand practices into alternative medicine.

Marijuana Movies |

Marijuana and the movies have had a long, mostly potent relationship. Cannabis has inspired any number of cinematic artists, and it’s important to note how public perception of pot has changed throughout the years, with evolving laws and a recent explosion of smoker-friendly content. Marijuana has been used in an erudite fashion by filmmakers, woven into the narrative like a character in Curtis Hanson’s masterpiece Wonder Boys, the iconic Coen brothers sensation The Big Lebowski, and the underrated Leaves of Grass. Oliver Stone’s entire cannon feels especially indebted to ganja, as does Terry Gilliam’s psychotropic adaptation of Hunter Thompson’s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Self-professed cannabis enthusiast Robert Altman left a misty haze over much of his work, most notably The Long Goodbye, California Split, and M*A*S*H, while his protégé, Paul Thomas Anderson, crafted a pot-infused ode to private eye cinema with Inherent Vice.

F. Gary Gray’s sly, smart, and hilarious pot comedy Friday still stands as one of the most influential cannabis narratives. The Seth Rogen/Judd Apatow connection has helped to legitimize marijuana to the masses, with box-office hits Pineapple Express and Knocked Up majorly emphasizing marijuana, treating it like a character as much as any of the leading actors. Musical biopic spoof Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story has some hilarious moments concerning reefer, the two Neighbors movies nearly give off a contact high, and the meta-comedy This Is The End carried a lit-joint torch of pro-pot components. Let’s not forget Danny McBride getting stoned with some sheep in Your Highness, which shared the skunky whiffs of 80’s cult-classics Krull and The Beastmaster.

High school comedies have consistently thrown marijuana into the equation, with Amy Heckerling’s Fast Times at Ridgemont High and Richard Linklater’s Dazed and Confused standing as cultural touchstones. Nearly all of Kevin Smith’s films seem to have been born out of a cloud of bong smoke, with the Jay and Silent Bob characters feeling like zeitgeist-tapping creations of cannabis-happy comedy. Greg Araki’s Smiley Face with Anna Faris is one of the more perceptive and giggle-inducing movies to feature a stoner at its center, while Jonathan Levine’s unique 90’s time capsule The Wackness painted a portrait of people’s lives fully dictated by marijuana, and how it can be used both for good and bad. Written by Nick Clement.

Birthplace: Winterset, Iowa, USA. Arguably the most popular – and certainly the busiest – movie leading man in Hollywood history, John Wayne entered the film business while working as a laborer on the Fox lot during summer vacations from U.S.C., which he attended on a football scholarship. Wayne was cast in small roles in Ford’s late-’20s films, occasionally under the name Duke Morrison. It was Ford who recommended Wayne to director Raoul Walsh for the male lead in the 1930 epic Western The Big Trail, and, although it was a failure at the box office, the movie showed Wayne’s potential as a leading man. It was in action roles that Wayne excelled, exuding a warm and imposing manliness onscreen to which both men and women could respond.

In 1939, Ford cast Wayne as the Ringo Kid in the adventure Stagecoach, a brilliant Western of modest scale but tremendous power, and the actor finally showed what he could do. Wayne nearly stole a picture filled with Oscar-caliber performances, and his career was made. He starred in most of Ford’s subsequent major films, whether Westerns; war pictures; or serious dramas. Most of these films were extremely successful, and included such titles as Angel and the Badman, Island in the Sky, The High and the Mighty, and Hondo. The 1958 Western Rio Bravo, directed by Howard Hawks, proved so popular that it was remade by Hawks and Wayne twice, once as El Dorado and later as Rio Lobo.

At the end of the 1950s, Wayne began taking on bigger films, most notably The Alamo, which he produced and directed, as well as starred in. During the early ’60s, concerned over the growing liberal slant in American politics, Wayne emerged as a spokesman for conservative causes, especially support for America’s role in Vietnam, which put him at odds with a new generation of journalists and film critics. McLintock!, which, despite well-articulated statements against racism and the mistreatment of Native Americans, and in support of environmentalism, seemed to confirm the left’s worst fears, but also earned more than ten million dollars and made the list of top-grossing films of 1963-1964.

Jimmy Kimmel & Seth Rogen List Top 4 People to Smoke Weed With

Nash Edgerton’s “Gringo” – Millennial Movie Man

Along with Joel, Gringo delivers a top-billed list of performers, including David Oyelowo playing the lovable yet naïve lead, Charlize Theron in a Cruella Deville style supporting role, Amanda Seyfried doing her good girl next door routine, and Sharlto Copley being the badass we knew him to be. A film named for the obvious purpose of addressing an American out of his comfort zone in Mexico, Gringo could very well have been called anything for all the absolute craziness that it covers. TABLE SETTING/FIRST-ACTOyelowo plays Harold Soyinka: a middle-management, play-by-the-rules Nigerian Immigrant living in Chicago determined to pay his dues and to secure his own slice of the American dream – at least until he is held hostage on a business trip in Mexico. The corporate vampires and deplorable individuals that are Richard and Elaine have commenced in closing talks on a company merger looking to clean house, with the more than gullible Harold first to go on the chopping block. After finally starting to see the writing on the wall in respect to his fading job security,, good-guy Harold attempts to take his future by the balls and decides to formulates an amateurish, half-cocked extortion scheme to secure money from his crooked bosses while in Mexico.

Before you know it, a slew of wacky characters become thrown into the mix and right into Harold’s self-destructive path while in Mexico – including sweet girl Sunny, Richard’s mercenary tracking brother Mitch, and a couple of money-grubbing knuckleheads who manage a local Mexican motel. The real fun and gun style stuff is all happening with Harold south of the border, with semi-hilarity coupling with brutally explosive violence unfolds; Gringo manages to find some stable footing and a good-natured stride in its Mexican setting for a while, making the first two-thirds of the film admissibly enjoyable. To couple with the chubby plot and scattered cast, Gringo begins shedding its narrative and character weight once certain plot point requirements are met for forward momentum. Some of what were supposed to be defining aspects of Gringo just falls to the wayside to make room for the bloated and messy storytelling. Gringo’s strengths happen to reside in the cast and their brilliant chemistry with one another, particularly with the duos of Edgerton/Theron and Oyelowo/Copley.

Gringo is at its best when its characters are riffing and vibing; however, it evidently erupts these moments with a hurried narrative that never seems to allow the film a chance to breathe, nor its characters the ability to ever really develop within their restricted frameworks. This film has some memorable moments, but due to its inefficiencies, poorly-devised promotional strategy, and its vaguely obscure film title, Gringo may not be one to remember years down the road. Gringo is available everywhere, including Redbox.

The effort borrows the sanctuary idea from a controversial California law passed last year limiting local law enforcement’s efforts to work with federal authorities to arrest and deport illegal immigrants. Assemblyman Reggie Jones-Sawyer, a Democrat who represents part of Los Angeles, is determined to protect the burgeoning billion-dollar marijuana industry in the state from federal prosecution by reviving a bill that stalled in the Senate in June after passing in the Assembly. While many states have decriminalized or legalized marijuana use, the drug is still illegal under federal law. Attorney General Jeff Sessions earlier this month moved to rescind the Obama-era hands-off policy on states with marijuana-friendly state laws just as California’s law legalizing recreational use went into effect. The California Police Chiefs Association and the California State Sheriffs’ Association also came out against the marijuana sanctuary state bill last year, deriding it as another effort to tie their hands.

Fifty-seven percent of Californians voted in favor of making recreational marijuana use legal in a 2016 state ballot initiative. Like the sanctuary state law, which restricted law enforcement’s ability to cooperate with federal authorities to locate, arrest and deport illegal immigrants, Joes-Sawyer’s bill would prevent state and local agencies from working with federal drug enforcement agencies to arrest and prosecute legal marijuana growers and sellers without a federal court order. Jones-Sawyer has said he has no problem with Sessions trying to target illegal marijuana businesses trying to operate in California. Last week, Assemblyman Rob Bonta, a Democrat from Oakland, Calif., also took action to try to undercut any federal prosecutions against the state’s marijuana growers, sellers and users. If the federal government begins a new wave of enforcement against the marijuana industry in the state it could have a chilling effect on an industry that is expected to hit $6.5 billion in sales by 2020, according to New Frontier Data, a research firm that analyzes the industry.

State Attorney General Xavier Becerra, who is engaged in a court fight with Trump over legal protections for immigrants in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, has said he is considering filing suit against Sessions on the marijuana issue as well. He also has requested information from U.S. attorneys located in California who represent the federal government on how they plan to implement Sessions’s marijuana policy-whether they plan to aggressively go after marijuana growers and sellers or only in cases that involve other serious criminal allegations.

Seth Rogen’s Marijuana Knowledge Tested By Anna Faris | PopFest | Entertainment Weekly

Film Review: A good cast can’t save contrived marijuana flick ‘Gringo’

Oyelowo plays Harold, a Nigerian immigrant and middle manager for a pharma company run by his friend Richard. His bosses are mass producing a marijuana pill so that they’ll be ready to conquer the market when it’s legalized in the U.S., but unbeknownst to him they’re sustaining their business on illegal sales in Mexico facilitated by a local drug lord. We know Harold’s life is sad because we’re introduced to him in the middle of a bitter Chicago winter. He takes his pup out in the freezing cold in the morning and then goes to meet with his accountant, who informs Harold that his wife, Bonnie is digging them into massive debt with her costly and unsuccessful interior design business. When Harold suggests that perhaps Bonnie not rent out expensive office space while she’s still launching the business and has only one client, she scoffs and it’s the end of the discussion.

Elaine, Richard and Harold go off to Mexico to cut off the illegal arm of their business, which Harold knows nothing about. None of them speak Spanish, even Harold, who is supposed to be the main liaison there. Naturally, the drug lord they’re in business with, the Black Panther, is not ready to give up this weed pill supply and sets off to kidnap Harold. Every character we meet there, whether it’s the office manager with a half dozen kids, the sleazy hotel managers, the bartender, etc. It never really pays off or connects in any meaningful way, other than the fact that they happen to run into Harold a lot.

There’s a lot of gun violence, casual racism, and hatefulness in general, especially toward women. Oyelowo is the one who comes off without a scratch and actually has some quite amusing moments.

Toronto’s Marijuana Infused Comedy Scene

The center of Canada’s comedy universe is home to a series of weekly rooms where audience members can openly smoke marijuana while enjoying some of the best standup the city has to offer. Third Klass Thursdays along with Weedy Wednesdays and Stoner Sundays are three of the biggest weekly standup shows in Toronto, vapor lounge or not and all three happen at Vapor Central on Yonge Street. Despite hosting three of the biggest weekly shows in the city, Chris won’t take credit for creating the weed-infused comedy circuit. Joey aka Puff Mama is a former comedy club employee at the now defunct Comedy Wood in Toronto. She started producing her own shows once the club shut down.

The Underground Comedy Club quickly became a popular stop for touring pros coming to Toronto. Local comedian Rob Mailloux has performed on and produced several shows at Underground. With consistently sold out rooms featuring touring pros and stacked lineups of local acts, the Vapor Lounge series of shows are some of the strongest and most successful in the city. It’s a community of shows that’s thriving in the heavily saturated Toronto comedy scene. Sold out rooms full of comedy fans openly smoking weed, carefree.

There are a few rules that everyone must follow at the shows. Whether visiting Toronto as a comedian, comedy fan, marijuana enthusiast or curious cat, the Vapor Lounge series of shows are worth checking out.

Remembering Miloš Forman, The First Marijuana Comedy Director

You may never have heard of Miloš Forman, but you should have. At least if you think movies about weed are funny, you should have heard of him. Miloš Forman did win two Academy Awards for directing two amazing films, Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next of course starring Jack Nicholson. The movie you may never have heard of and may become a quick favorite is Taking Off from 1971. Mr.

Forman passed away last week at the age of 86. In his movie Taking Off, rich New Yorkers just do not know what to do about their out of control children that are regular potheads. They seek out guidance from a support group led by Vincent Schiavelli to discover how to manage their young stoners. They are advised by their support group to learn and understand what could be drawing their teenagers to marijuana by indulging in a smoke session themselves. Joints are passed around the group that do not seem entirely turned off by the idea and hilarity ensues.

On top of winning two Academy Awards, Miloš Forman won the Grand Prix award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival for Taking Off. The Grand Prix award virtually makes Taking Off to most acclaimed stoner movie of all time. It makes movies like Pineapple Express make a lot of sense even though they may never had planned on it making sense in the first place.

Marijuana Smoking on Caribbean Princess – Funny Comedy – Hypnotist Fernandez

Stoner comedy “Super Troopers 2,” opening on 4/20, has an unexpected Denver connection

The event also provided valuable, on-brand PR for Khalatbari, who is challenging Mayor Michael Hancock in the May 2019 election and has raised more funds than the embattled Hancock this year. Khalatbari, who made his money with the Sexy Pizza chain before co-founding the Denver Relief dispensary, was quick to strike the sort of unprompted, wonky tone befitting an elected official. Also potentially catching fire: Actual marijuana in the WeedStream trailer in the Sie’s parking lot that night – a modified Airstream trailer where the cast did interviews, and the public could hang out and legally get high before the screening. While Fox Searchlight Pictures brought the trailer to the Sie, Khalatbari has been using his own connections to market the film. The original was made for just over $1 million and did middling business at the box office, but has gone on to become a dorm-room classic thanks to home video and streaming.

That means the sequel has a lot to live up to – including an incredibly high reputation among stoners. The crowd at the Sie FilmCenter on Sunday was not quite so breezy. Some of the fans had whole swaths of the original film memorized, judging by the quotes overheard in conversation. Most hustled into the theater long before the start time. We need more than 54,000 people to show up this weekend.

That explains Broken Lizard’s relentless road trip to promote the movie, which continued on to Chicago after the Denver premiere Sunday. You can also stack the deck by getting really, really high before watching.

The Late Miloš Forman Was A Stoner Comedy Pioneer

Cheech and Chong often get credited for inventing the stoner comedy, but the cannabis sub-genre actually began long before they crashed the scene. Two-time Academy Award winner director Miloš Forman – who passed away last night at the age of 86 – directed the marijuana-themed comedy ‘Taking Off’ seven years before ‘Up in Smoke’ debuted. Forman’s film features a group of wealthy suburban New Yorkers who join a support group to cope with the stress caused by their rebellious kids. To understand their troubled teens, the group takes a crash course on marijuana offered by a guest speaker played by Vincent Schiavelli. After a lecture on cannabis etiquette, the guest speaker – – encourages the uptight crowd to light up a dozen spliffs while portraits of affluent ancestors look on pensively.

The film won the coveted Grand Prix award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival- making it one of the most critically acclaimed stoner comedies of all time. Check out the hilariously awkward scene below, which probably introduced terms like ‘joint,’ ‘bogart’ and ‘roach’ to moviegoers who identified with the squares on screen.

Berkeley to discuss how to make marijuana regulations equitable

Berkeley City Council will discuss proposed regulations for the operation of recreational and medicinal cannabis businesses at its special meeting Tuesday. The proposed regulations and selection process for cannabis business licenses are designed to enable efficient and timely implementation, as well as create opportunities for historically disadvantaged communities to contribute to and benefit from the industry, according to the report. New local regulations would govern how and where both medicinal and recreational cannabis businesses could operate in Berkeley, in addition to providing requirements for security, record keeping and reporting. Current regulations only allow existing medical cannabis dispensaries and manufacturers to apply for temporary adult-use cannabis permits. The city of Oakland has already implemented cannabis regulations that prioritize applications for dispensary permits based on a number of criteria – for example, the city gives preference to low-income individuals or those previously incarcerated for marijuana-related offenses in Oakland.

Kalb said the regulations have so far been met with a positive response and that many of the city’s applicants qualify for the equity criteria. Harrison said she plans to inquire about making the criteria for low-income and formerly incarcerated individuals simpler. The council will also decide on the number of dispensaries Berkeley will have and where they will be placed. Both Harrison and Worthington emphasized that the city is only setting a maximum, not a minimum, for the number of dispensaries possible. The question of where to place the dispensaries addresses concerns regarding secondhand smoke, according to Harrison.

She added that she was also hoping to find a way to preserve Berkeley’s tradition of marijuana collectives – places where people traded and sold marijuana. Worthington’s main concern lies with the timing of the regulations.

Doctor 420- fight for medical marijuana with a twist of comedy. The dispensary will be called Roseanne’s Joint and will sell marijuana products bearing its name, said partner Aaron Herzberg, 46. Barr joins a growing number of celebrities trying their hand at medical marijuana ventures, in Santa Ana and beyond. Last week, actor Woody Harrelson applied for a marijuana dispensary license in Hawaii. The building is 5,000 square feet, about three times the average dispensary size, said Francey, who’s already opened his first medicial marijuana shop in the city, OC3 at 3122 S.

Halladay St. He and Herzberg said they hope the city will consider allowing cultivation or a coffee shop operation at licensed dispensaries. In 1937, the first marijuana seller was arrested and convicted under a federal Law. As cannabis disappeared from pharmacy shelves as a pain-treating medicine, and with the government driving lies about it home the plant became a source of fear, marijuana began starring in horror films that years later would become cult comedy classics. Six years later, in 1942, marijuana was removed from the United States Pharmacopeia, discrediting of its therapeutic legitimacy by the American Medical Association.

In 1978, New Mexico passed the first state law recognizing the medical value of marijuana under the Controlled Substances Therapeutic Research Act. Eventually, marijuana gained more and more popularity as a sub-culture, complete with Tommy Chong selling his own bongs on the internet. Within a 70-year time period, the subject of marijuana took the notion of a drug dealer from a homicidal maniac to a cuddly BFFF. At the same time, the plant itself has gone from being viewed as a menace to being viewed as medicine. Now, even whole publications like The National are taking a stand against the War on Drugs, calling it a complete failure and demanding full marijuana legalization.

Marijuana at the movies

Don’t look to Hollywood history for a nuanced depiction of the average marijuana user. Seth Rogen reigns as the current king of stoner comedies, though he owes his success to the trails blazed by Cheech & Chong, Bill & Ted, Harold & Kumar, and those poor, poor teenagers infected with reefer madness generations ago. Memorable marijuana use in cinema rarely crosses into heavy drama. Dopeheads on film may act, well, dopey, but many users and non-users alike remember them because they’re bigger than life, and their humor transcends the stoner stereotype. In many ways, the expanded legalization of marijuana and ease of access may fly in the face of weed’s anti-establishment roots, meaning the golden age of ‘stoner comedies’ may actually be waning.

Rogen still makes room for pot in most of his movies, but the stories themselves are becoming more about growing up and being responsible Marijuana still matters, just not as much as, say, taking care of family. Writer/director Kevin Smith created a memorable duo of stoner heroes: Jay and Silent Bob. While the director now proudly touts his own regular marijuana use, the movies lack the punch and basic cohesiveness of even his laziest Jay and Bob bits. Rogen’s cannabis indoctrination of Hollywood works mostly because the comedian manages to make consistent films. Rogen may be the figurehead of the stoner film genre, but he’s ushering in an era where the genre fits more comfortably in the broader comedic landscape.

As marijuana continues its rise to the mainstream, there may be less need for lovable, anti-establishment stoner heroes. So long as the Dude abides, movies will always welcome them for the occasional shenanigans.

Thoughts From A Daily Marijuana Smoker

People have been turning to marijuana throughout history for a number of different reasons. Despite legalization efforts and the mainstreaming of marijuana use in America, there is still a prevalent negative perception of its users. The typical stoner stereotypes of lazy, shiftless, irresponsible individuals immediately come to mind for many people, with others viewing users as drug addicts and even as criminals. Proponents are fighting back against this unfair perception citing the very beneficial aspects of marijuana especially when compared to substances like alcohol. Despite how destructive it can be, most people won’t bat an eye if they hear that someone drinks every day to calm down and relax.

If the same person said that they smoked marijuana everyday for the same reasons, like the essay’s author confesses that they do, it could prove to be both socially and professionally problematic. Be sure to follow the link below for the author’s full essay on marijuana’s positive effects on their life! I moved to Northern California when I was 18 and was plunged into the world of marijuana. I have dealt with anxiety and OCD for most of my life, and I found it really quelled any stresses I was managing. In her learnings, she had encountered a lot of studies that had shown weed in moderate amounts was helping people sleep better, reduce anxiety, and even have better sex.

I decided to try smoking a bit of weed before bed, and within days, it completely transformed my life. Before I started smoking weed, I would sometimes lie in bed until 3 a.m. just going over everything I had to do the next day and not getting any rest.
