Rotten Tomatoes

You’re always trying as a film reviewer to rationalise or explain why you might like or dislike a particular film. In spite of our best efforts, there are always some films whose appeal is hard to pin down. Saving Grace is one of those films, like so many British comedies, which you enjoy almost in spite of yourself. You certainly wouldn’t advertise it as one of your favourite films if the topic came up in conversation. In amongst its flaws there is genuine enjoyment to be had, even if it is slightly embarrassing for so-called film buffs to admit it.

The film has a familiar stock of British dramatic and character actors, making it feel like the sort of work people take in between series of Midsummer Murders. Bill Bailey, who also appears in Hot Fuzz, turns up for a brief cameo as a drug dealer and almost steals the entire film. On this basis, you would expect Saving Grace to be a flimsy blancmange of a film, barely hanging together on the strength of a few famous faces. There is no more damning criticism of any film, let alone a comedy, to say that it would be improved if watched through a cloud of illegal chemicals. For all his frequent concessions to cliché and sentimentality, Cole has a good track record with making films which play to a female audience, and which are genuinely about woman rather than simply having women in them.

The real proof of the film’s steadiness of tone and belief in the central story comes in the scene involving the two elderly ladies in the post office, who in a previous scene accidentally drank some of Grace’s hemp after mistaking it for tea. You couldn’t argue that Saving Grace was a great film, or indeed a very good film.

Satire: The Real Problem With Legalizing Marijuana – Langley Today

Still others dismiss the idea of charging people with a crime for the recreational use of marijuana as just one more absurd and failed part of the war on drugs. Those opposed to legalizing marijuana talk about it being a ‘gateway’ drug that eventually leads users to harder, more dangerous drugs like crack cocaine. Some talk about safety issues related to things like smoking marijuana while driving while others decry what they see as the road to addiction. The only real difference is that the marijuana pictures will be of people freaking out as they search frantically for chocolate chip cookies and potato chips after smoking a joint. University campuses will be aflame with protest that marijuana is not permitted in the classroom and the cost subsidized by government and AdBusters will protest the commercialization of Mother Nature.

People Against Marijuana will form and begin a concerted campaign against the smoking of marijuana. This will not be the same people as those currently opposed to legalizing marijuana. PAM will lobby provincial and federal governments for new laws restricting the use of marijuana in various public locations. They’ll start with the workplace and then move to ban smoking marijuana in malls and parks. Eventually, PAM will be successful at getting government to ban marijuana from rock concerts.

Marijuana Farming IndustryMarijuana will fall out of favour; more and more people will quit resulting in declining sales which will undermine the marijuana farming industry. Eventually, all of the fun of tokin’ with a few friends will be lost as marijuana users stand shivering outside in winter where the smokers used to stand.
