Cheech and Chong

As an actor, director, writer, musician, art collector and humanitarian, Cheech is a man who has proven that he has the intellect and wit to make a simple smile appear in any situation. At the side of his partner Tommy Chong, he enjoyed immense off-color comedic success in the 1970’s before moving into a diverse range of roles, having appeared in more than 20 films, including Spy Kids, Tin Cup, and Once Upon A Time In Mexico. His television credits include co-starring with Don Johnson in the popular CBS drama, Nash Bridges, a recurring role on the hit series Lost, and a guest appearance on Grey’s Anatomy. Marin has also become a well-known collector of Chicano art, and is thought to own one of the more prevalent private collections. Much of it formed the core of his traveling exhibition Chicano Visions: American Painters on the Verge, which broke attendance records during its groundbreaking 15-city tour during 2001-2007 to major art museums across the United States. Selections from his collection can also be seen in his Los Angelenos/Chicano Painters of L.A., an exhibition on view at LACMA in Los Angeles, now through November 2, 2008. A third-generation Mexican American, Cheech has received numerous awards for his work on behalf of Latinos, including the 2000 Creative Achievement Award from the Imagen Foundation and the 1999 ALMA Community Service Award from the National Council of La Raza and Kraft Foods. He serves on the boards of the Smithsonian Latino Center and the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. The duo regrouped at the world-famous Troubadour in L.A. and announced their first tour in over 25 years!

Synthetic Marijuana removed from Northampton head shops – Massachusetts Daily Collegian

For a month now, the police department has been going around to local head and smoke shops in the city to urge merchants to withdraw synthetic marijuana, which has recently been called dangerous by various medical organizations. Three individuals were hospitalized in Westfield after using it, which increased concern over the health hazards of the substance in western Massachusetts, McMahon said. The substance is being marketed with many prominent aliases – such as K2, K3 and Spice – said Joey Kennedy, an employee at Shop Therapy, a Northampton store that sold synthetic pot until a month ago. Since becoming available to the public two years ago, synthetic pot has gained popularity in western Massachusetts, Kennedy said, especially with teens on probation and with veterans who want to smoke marijuana but do not want to lose their benefits from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Cooke said he has seen people get hurt after using synthetic pot. The Hempest does not sell synthetic pot, Cooke said. According to McMahon, stores have been cooperative with the police department for the removal of synthetic pot in Northampton. He consulted the health department and consequently removed the substance from Shop Therapy’s shelves the day before police visited the store. While he understands the health risks involved with synthetic pot, Kennedy said the voluntary removal hurts business due to continued demand for the substance,. McMahon said the police department, together with the Drug Enforcement Administration, is pushing for the illegalization of the chemicals in synthetic marijuana, which are now under investigation.

From comedy to cannabis: Roseanne Barr invests in Santa Ana pot shop – Orange County Register

SANTA ANA – First, comedian Roseanne Barr blazed trails with her sitcom; more recently she joined the growing reality TV world as she farmed macadamia nuts in Hawaii. Barr will be an investor and have a licensing agreement with a dispensary that’s one of 20 that won a city lottery last year allowing it to apply to operate in Santa Ana, the actress’ spokesman and the dispensary’s partners said this week. The dispensary will be called Roseanne’s Joint and will sell marijuana products bearing its name, said partner Aaron Herzberg, 46. Barr joins a growing number of celebrities trying their hand at medical marijuana ventures, in Santa Ana and beyond. Cypress Hill rapper B-Real was the first celebrity to jump into the local pot scene when his dispensary was among those to win Santa Ana’s dispensary license lottery. Last week, actor Woody Harrelson applied for a marijuana dispensary license in Hawaii. Herzberg said construction for Roseanne’s Joint could be completed by late April, a necessary element to receive the regulatory safety permit, and the dispensary could open shortly afterward. Dispensary partners see Roseanne’s Joint as only the start. Barr’s licensed products could someday be distributed at other stores and she could be involved in other pot shop ventures, Herzberg said. The building is 5,000 square feet, about three times the average dispensary size, said Francey, who’s already opened his first medicial marijuana shop in the city, OC3 at 3122 S. Halladay St. He and Herzberg said they hope the city will consider allowing cultivation or a coffee shop operation at licensed dispensaries.
