Legalizing Marijuana in Canada | RON JAMES

Is it legal to mail marijuana between states? Here’s what federal and state laws say.

Mailing pot across state lines is an incredibly bad idea, according to Erik Altieri, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws. Under the Controlled Substances Act – which was signed into law by President Richard Nixon in 1970 to regulate the manufacture, possession and use of certain drugs – marijuana is a Schedule 1 drug. Drug trafficking penalties vary depending on the schedule of the drug being trafficked and the amount. For less than 50 kilograms of marijuana, the maximum penalty for the first offense is up to five years in jail and a fine of up to $250,000 for a single individual. For the second offense, the maximum penalty doubles: up to 10 years behind bars and a fine not to exceed $500,000.

The DEA lists penalties for more serious crimes on its website. These penalties can apply to both sender and recipient. Marijuana is also the most commonly seized drug by postal inspectors. In fiscal year 2014, inspectors seized 39,301 pounds of marijuana. That number dropped to 34,305 in 2015, the first full fiscal year for which medical marijuana was legal in Colorado and Washington.

Jersey City to Decriminalize Marijuana

Marijuana laws in Jersey City go up in smoke as of Thursday, July 19, as Mayor Steven Fulop and Chief Prosecutor Jake Hudnut direct all Jersey City prosecutors to cease prosecuting marijuana possession cases before the municipal courts. Jersey City will be the first in New Jersey to put forward a policy to address decriminalization on a local level, in the hopes of guiding other towns across the state to enact similar changes to outdated marijuana policies. As the state continues to pass around various versions of a marijuana decriminalization program, Jersey City simply took it upon themselves to spark their own effort. According to the City, there are more than 25,000 arrests for marijuana possession each year in New Jersey-and it is estimated that prosecution following these arrests has cost the state well more than $1 billion each decade in policing, court operations, probation, and jailing.

Bongoloids – the Medical Marijuana comedy that’ll have you coughing your ass off.

Trump Confirms He Will Support Bill Ending Federal Marijuana Ban

Talking with reporters Friday morning before heading to G7 in Canada, Trump said he will back a bill that protects states that have legalized marijuana from federal prohibition. The bill, introduced by Sen. Cory Gardner and Elizabeth Warren, would make federal marijuana laws inapplicable in states, federal territories, and tribal lands that have passed legalization measures. Trump’s statement is in opposition to Attorney General Jeff Sessions’ stance on the matter as the DOJ has been cracking down on cannabis decriminalization laws under his reign. In the video below, former congressman Billy Tauzin predicts fully legal weed within five years.

Urban Dictionary: Dank

Dank, is an adjective which is over-used by people in general and mostly by people trying to appear cool to their stoner friends. It was originally a common word to describe disgusting basements and caves ect. Then the world of pot took it over and was using it very correctly to describe very potent strains of marijuana, seeing as the definition of dank meets all the qualities you find in good marijuana. In reality it makes them seem as illiterate as an ape. M&M’s are not dank, chips are not dank, and your clothes are definitely not dank, you need to stop overusing and killing the word.

Barry Chuckle of UK comedy duo Chuckle Brothers dies at 73

British children’s entertainer Barry Chuckle, half of sibling duo the Chuckle Brothers, has died at age 73. Barry and his younger brother Paul came from a family of entertainers in northern England – their father performed alongside a young Peter Sellers – and developed a double act that combined visual gags, catchphrases and the brothers’ natural warmth. The brothers typically undertook a new task in each episode, producing slapstick results. The duo were awarded a special British Academy award in 2008 for their contribution to children’s television.

Should the NFL allow marijuana use?

As a federally sanctioned and regulated monopoly, the NFL really has no choice here. The league is also very conscious of the fact that players play in different states. Players are required to pay state income tax for where they play that week, not where they live or play their home games. Local laws have to be honored, as state government is often the source of funding for new stadiums, and most states have not legalized pot.

Roseanne’s Marijuana Episode Part 3

Report: Legal marijuana boosts government revenue

A new report finds that legalizing and taxing marijuana boosts revenue for state and local governments, but not by much. The credit rating agency Moody’s Investor Service says in a study released Tuesday that legalizing recreational use of marijuana brings governments more money than it costs to regulate it. Despite high taxes on the legal sales of the drug, the revenue accounts for a small portion of government budgets. In Colorado, the first state to legalize recreational use, a marijuana tax brings in the equivalent of about 2 percent of the state budget. In Washington state, gross revenue from marijuana legalization equaled 1.2 percent of general fund revenue in the 2015-17 state budget.

Most of the states that have legalized marijuana earmark the revenue for law enforcement, drug treatment and other specific programs, which doesn’t help the states’ financial flexibility. Moody’s described the revenue effect as minimal on local governments in states with legalized pot. Creating revenue for the state is one argument proponents use for legalization in New Jersey. Gov. Phil Murphy, who supports the effort, is planning on having an additional $60 million in taxes from legalized marijuana in the next fiscal year.

Twenty-nine states now allow marijuana for either medicinal or recreational uses, and the business is growing quickly. Illegal marijuana sales are estimated at $40 billion. Many employers across the country are quietly taking what once would have been a radical step: They’re dropping marijuana from the drug tests they require of prospective employees.

Legalization of Marijuana Essay examples

Legalization of Marijuana Purpose: The reason why I am up here is to talk about the legalization of Marijuana. Thesis: Although you may all think that I am here to talk about the legalization of marijuana in the positive way, I am not. A. Hello fellow classmates, my name is Ivan and I am here to talk about the legalization of marijuana as it continues to grow as important controversial issue in the United States. C.

As a person that has been around the use of marijuana and have read several articles throughout my life, I believe that I have sufficient knowledge on weed. Let’s be honest here, our government as a whole is corrupt, and adding on to the big businesses such as Monsanto and Philip Morris, marijuana wouldn’t be naturally grown. II. Body.A. Weed will not be the same if big business gets a hold of the crop.

The way marijuana is grown would be absolutely different. Furthermore on if a big business got rights to the crop; the whole structure of marijuana growth would be different. B. Raise your hand if you’ve ever smoked weed. My point is, if marijuana is legalized, America would lose its place in the world.

According to all my friends that use marijuana, there really isn’t anything they do productive unless they show up to class or work high. I have evaluated my friends use of marijuana over the past couple years of my life and the main things they do on this drug is eat, smoke more weed, watch a movie, pass out on the couch after watching a movie.

‘Disjointed’ Review: Kathy Bates’ Weed-Themed Netflix Comedy

You might have seen that Disjointed stars the great Kathy Bates and airs on Netflix, and assumed that it must be innovative in some way. Don’t be fooled: This is basically a lame CBS sitcom dressed up in hip, streaming-service clothing. Disjointed is a generic workplace sitcom that might as well take place at a health-food store, or a chiropractor’s office. Disjointed’s hacky sitcom format is a poor fit for Bates, who looks uncomfortable throughout, even appearing to read her lines off of cue cards at times. I have no doubt Bates could be hilarious and terrific in the right TV comedy.

Disjointed’s supporting cast is mostly forgettable, because their characters are patched together from sitcom clichés. Across the board, Disjointed is marred by very broad, yell-y acting, with the cast straining to sell woeful jokes that range from tired pothead stereotypes to vulgar double-entendres. With shows like this and Fuller House, Netflix seems to be trying to establish a foothold in the traditional three-camera sitcom game. Disjointed’s failings just underline why the old-fashioned sitcom is a dying art these days. Michael Douglas actually just signed on to star in a new Netflix comedy series produced by Lorre.

Mike, buddy, save yourself a lot of time and heartache: Watch five minutes of Disjointed to get an idea of what you’re in for and then run for the hills. THE TVLINE BOTTOM LINE: Just say no to Netflix’s Disjointed – a strained, dreadfully unfunny sitcom that squanders the talents of Kathy Bates.

Xanax Addiction: The Risks & Side Effects of Xanax Abuse

Xanax is a brand name for the drug alprazolam, one of several in a group of drugs known as benzodiazepines. Xanax is commonly prescribed for the treatment of panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder or social anxiety disorder. Xanax works by boosting the effects of a natural chemical made in the brain called gamma-aminobutyric acid. In 2015, Xanax was the ninth bestselling drug and fifth most prescribed drug in the U.S.3. From 2004-2009, Xanax saw the second largest pharmaceutical increase in production, with rates increasing 148%.

The only drug that saw higher levels of production was oxycodone. As a generic, Xanax is prescribed more than the sleeping pill Ambien and more than the antidepressant Zoloft. The average person with a Xanax addiction takes about 20 to 30 pills every day.3. Long before a person becomes addicted, Xanax use carries a number of risks and dangers. The most serious risk of Xanax abuse is associated with taking it with other drugs and alcohol.

According to two clinical studies, the majority of people who are prescribed Xanax by a medical professional do not develop a substance use disorder. It is fairly common for users to become physically dependent, which equates to an addiction to Xanax. While the severity and incidence of withdrawal symptoms appear to be related to dosage and duration of treatment, people taking Xanax for brief periods at recommended doses have reported withdrawal symptoms including seizures.

Watch John Oliver Blaze Through the Problems with Marijuana Legalization :: Comedy :: Video :: John Oliver :: Paste

The issue of marijuana is like Mark Wahlberg being seen as a serious actor. That’s part of the central thesis of John Oliver’s latest piece on marijuana legalization; it’s something we’ve all grown to accept, but is still fraught with problems. In the case of Wahlberg, it’s films such as Transformers. For legalization, it’s a matter of new state laws about weed use being in serious conflict with existing federal laws about everything from shipping to paying employees of legal dispensaries, to individuals with disabilities being able to use marijuana. Many of those federal laws are decades old and were less strictly enforced under President Obama’s tenure.

Netflix Orders Marijuana Comedy Series Starring Kathy Bates

TV, making a 20 episode series order for the show that has the veteran skills of Chuck Lorre and David Javerbaum at the helm. Disjointed is a stoner comedy based around an L.A. cannabis dispensary. The excellent Kathy Bates will take the lead role as the store owner, managing a group of constantly high employees -undoubtedly the source for ensuing dope centrist humor. Deadline reports that Bates’ character is a long-time campaigner for marijuana legalization, who is taking advantage of the relaxed cannabis laws in California and achieving her ambitions by running a dispensary. This will not be the first time Lorre has acquired the notable talent of Bates for one of his projects; the Oscar-nominated actress earned an Emmy for her guest appearance on Two And A Half Men in 2012. Lorre has found previous success working on various sitcoms, writing several episodes of Roseanne in the early 1990s and cycling through various series before ending up at the helm of the hugely popular Big Bang Theory. Netflix has a growing collection of original sitcoms, such as Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Grace And Frankie. The network’s open minded attitude towards traditionally controversial subject matter should make it a great fit for a weed orientated show, allowing Lorre more freedom to explore this potentially hilarious context than his usual home on CBS. It should be fun to see Bates take on a lead role in a sitcom and spread her comedic wings within this role as a marijuana matriarch. With Bates on board and the proven comedic expertise from its showrunners, this series has the potential to be something special. With luck, Lorre will be able to land some equally good talent to play the other regulars at Bates’ dispensary, and it will be interesting to see how the showrunner handles the move to a streaming platform like Netflix.

The Tragedy of Stoner Comedy

Fourteen states have effectively decriminalized possession of small amounts of marijuana, and on June 4 Mayor Bloomberg and the New York Police Department announced plans to follow suit in NYC. As marijuana goes mainstream, its media portrayal has likewise softened. In the film, marijuana transforms seemingly normal, upstanding American youth into maniacs similar to the opium fiends of earlier stereotypes. Drugs were everywhere: on the strip, where people dropped microtabs of acid and then painted themselves blue; in middle schools, where young pushers did the work of the Fagin-esque masterminds of the marijuana trade; and in middle-class homes, where the sharing of one joint led a young Don and Betty Draper-esque couple to neglect its newborn in a bathtub with a running faucet, where the tot ineluctably drowned. Their straggly long hair, stoner talk, and constant fiending for the demon weed established the stereotype that prevails, in various permutations, to this day. Of late, the stoner comedy has become more realistic. The movie blended stoner stereotypes and broad humor with blood, gore, and violence. More than likely, the stoner comedies of the future will continue to play up the humor while conveniently overlooking the tragedy at the heart of American marijuana prohibition. Whatever the case, there will be no stoner comedy that deals with the harm inflicted on a family when an adult male breadwinner is sent to state prison for what is essentially a victimless crime. Marijuana prohibition has been the gateway to an exponential expansion of the prison-industrial complex, but that’s a reality silver-screen fantasies will not touch. As with romantic comedies, which give us a skewed view of love, the stoner genre is riddled with distortions and misrepresentations-a bad trip worthy of the worst directors in Hollywood.

Stewart Richlin’s Long Strange Trip To Become a Weed Lawyer

On any given night, past security and down a long corridor emanating a skunky, aromatic haze, attorney Stewart Richlin can be found in the lounge of a cannabis speakeasy comedy club. The people who select themselves into the cannabis community are groovy people who have a nice aura around them. After studying at UCLA and Southwestern Law before becoming an attorney in 1986, Richlin quit his job in 1995 to become a yoga teacher. Without a break between kindergarten and law school, Richlin says he was beginning to feel burned out after taking the bar exam. Though he practiced law for a few years, yoga offered the kind of break he needed and re-inspired his law practice later on. In 2002, Richlin reopened his own law practice, focusing on the then-brand new medical marijuana industry, helping growers and dispensary owners comply with state regulations. Until the implementation of Assembly Bill 266, which requires growers, dispensaries, delivery services, manufacturers and others in the medical marijuana industry to obtain state and city licenses while forcing some to shut down by 2018, when it takes effect, California’s largely unregulated medical marijuana program gave Richlin an opportunity to apply what he learned from yoga to his law practice. L.A. County alone is home to the city of Los Angeles, 88 independent cities and county land, so there are 90 different sets of medical marijuana rules, he says. If the opportunity presents itself, Richlin will also try to make the jury laugh – a little comedy goes a long way in the courtroom, bringing the court and jury down to basic human interaction. It’s part of Richlin’s greater move back into comedy as he prepares for the next stage of his career, which involves writing a TV pilot about opening up a yoga studio.

The 20 Best Stoner Movies Of All Time

Dude in honor of the awesomeness that is Pineapple Express, starring Seth Rogan and James Franco, we offer up our 20 best stoner movies of all time. Somewhere among the stoner humor comes an intelligent film about weed. OK, so you’re not going to find your lighthearted buddy stoner comedy in Homegrown, but that doesn’t mean you should pass it by. While it’s not strictly a pothead movie, PCU has elements of stoner activity among the n’er-do-wells of The Pit and the campus potheads, who spend their days playing Frisbee. Seth Rogen delivers the stoner persona of Ben Stone well – conflicted by having to put his pothead ways behind him and become more responsible as he prepares for a baby. Breaking away from his stoner pals is hard to do because they’re just too much frickin fun. Seth Rogan naturally draws on his stoner experience and James Franco shows a funnier side over some of his serious roles. Friday became an instant stoner hit with the hilarious roles played by Ice Cube and Chris Tucker. A big shout out has to be given to both Harold and Kumar films – the original is the ultimate stoner munchy run gone awry. With so many Cheech and Chong stoner flicks to choose from, we went with the original and probably the best of the series, Up in Smoke, if only for the prestigious honor of having the biggest joint in film history.

‘Disjointed’ Review: Kathy Bates’ Weed-Themed Netflix Comedy

You might have seen that Disjointed stars the great Kathy Bates and airs on Netflix, and assumed that it must be innovative in some way. Disjointed is a generic workplace sitcom that might as well take place at a health-food store, or a chiropractor’s office. Disjointed’s hacky sitcom format is a poor fit for Bates, who looks uncomfortable throughout, even appearing to read her lines off of cue cards at times.

Is Smoking Weed Around Dogs Dangerous?

At around the same time, I also composed a comprehensive website with 100 articles on dog and cat diseases, syndromes and treatments. None of the other 99 articles made much of a splash, but the article on marijuana really got noticed. I talk about canine marijuana intoxication in a straightforward and nonjudgemental way; this has unfortunately led some folks to the misconception that I endorse getting dogs stoned. NJ. The good news is that, unless an animal is confined in a pillowcase or in a room with extreme amounts of smoke, inhaling secondhand marijuana smoke is not likely to lead to intoxication. The bigger concern here is the smoke itself. Dogs have exquisitely sensitive lungs, and smoke can damage them. On the other hand, if the person doing the smoking does not go overboard, doesn’t smoke every day, and keeps a window open while smoking, it is not likely that much harm will come to the dog – from the smoke at least. Bear in mind that although I’ve never seen a dog die from marijuana intoxication, I have seen dogs die as a direct result of their owners getting stoned. The owner’s boyfriend got stoned and decided to hang out on his apartment building’s roof with the dog. It’s fun to write and joke about marijuana on the Internet, but remember that situations involving dogs and marijuana can end poorly.

Colorado Retail Marijuana Sales Finally Beat Medical Sales

Sales of legal retail marijuana have topped sales of medical marijuana in Colorado for the first time since the state’s recreational pot shops opened their doors on Jan. 1, according to tax figures released by the Colorado Department of Revenue. During the month of July, the state received $838,711 from a 2.9% tax on medical marijuana, meaning that patients spent an estimated $28.9 million at dispensaries. The state meanwhile raked in $2.97 million from a 10% sales tax on retail marijuana, putting those sales at about $29.7 million, according to calculations by the Cannabist. Though that amounts to a less than $1 million gap between retail and medical sales, this is a small victory for champions of legalization who have argued that the experiment will be profitable for the state, as revenues have lagged behind some expectations. If that trend holds for the entire year, it will present state officials with a challenge: How to prod a portion of those medical marijuana users into the retail market where they almost certainly belong. Medical marijuana privileges should be confined to genuine patients, particularly now that the retail option exists, and not to those merely seeking a break on price because the taxes are lower. For the legalization experiment to be a success, it needs to be profitable for the state and lure buyers from the black market, a migration that should be reflected in sales figures. Tvert says that prices of retail marijuana, currently around $35 for 1/8 ounce, are far from finalized. Because there is only data about the first six months of sales in an unprecedented market, conclusions about success or failure are impossible to draw. If retail sales continue to increase, while medical marijuana sales hold steady, expectations of a windfall from legal pot are less likely to go up in smoke.

Disjointed’s Kathy Bates on new Netflix comedy, the medicinal benefits of cannabis and American Horror Story

Back in 2012, Kathy Bates lit up a cigar, spat out some salty zingers and won an Emmy for her guest role as the ghost of Charlie Harper in Two and a Half Men, the CBS sitcom co-created by Chuck Lorre. Now she’s lighting up again – only this time it’s a reefer – as Ruth Whitefeather Feldman, the owner of a Southern California medical marijuana dispensary in Disjointed, Lorre’s new Netflix comedy. Ruth wants to rail against The Man; Travis wants to grow their shop into the Walmart of cannabis. When Bates went through breast cancer, she says marijuana really helped her with pain relief. Originally, when I was going through breast cancer, my oncologist prescribed some, because my recovery was painful and the marijuana was a tremendous help. Kathy Bates as the ghost of Charlie Harper in ‘Two and a Half Men’. You see how it’s helping people like the partner of our cannabis consultant, who has cerebral palsy, or the Gridiron Cannabis Coalition, a group of football players I met who were suffering from different head injuries and it helped them tremendously. Q: You aren’t doing ‘American Horror Story’ this season, but you’ve credited Ryan Murphy with reviving your career. I was diagnosed with breast cancer and I felt that, well, maybe I’m done here. This little kid inside me that loves to dress up and pretend, that I thought was done for, just came to life again.

While men are overflowing in the stoner comedy genre, the female stoner remains ever elusive. Pull the name of any stoner film out of a hat, and you’ll find this to be true: Up in Smoke, Pineapple Express, Harold and Kumar, Half Baked, Dude Where’s My Car, Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back-the list goes on. Via GIPHY.If a woman is seen in a stoner movie at all, it’s usually as the level-headed, semi-prudish adult responsible for reigning in their goofy male counterpart who just wants to smoke weed and have fun. According to some reports, women actually smoke more weed than men-and can generally out-smoke them too. Female stoners rarely get the chance to see themselves as protagonists on the big screen. On television, women have been making strides in the stoner genre with shows like Weeds, Mary + Jane, and to some extent Broad City. We’ve yet to see a pair of goofy, stoner, female friends getting unnecessarily high then going on an outlandish comedic adventure to get fast food, or whatever. If you’re a female stoner, you’ve likely seen very few portrayals of yourself on the big screen. The lack of female stoner movies is but one small component of a massive representational bias in the film industry. It’s time to finally put those two things together-weed smoking women and comedy-on the big screen for stoned women, and men, everywhere to enjoy.

Best Stoner Comedy Movies

The stoner comedy genre has always been a voice on political times – perhaps an apathetic, lackadaisical voice, yet nonetheless, a voice. These films have plenty to offer stoned and non-stoned viewers alike. In the counterculture of the late ’70s, they set the tone for the rest of the stoner comedy genre to follow suit. As they bumble and swerve their way down the road, discussing inanities and fleeing cops, they influence entire generations of future stoners, and stoner films, to come. In a word, he became the symbol of the ’80s stoner. One of the few stoner comedies that does not revolve around marijuana, this 1989 film follows perpetual slackers Bill and Ted as they travel through time to learn about history for a high school history presentation. The film refueled the stoner comedy genre of the ’90s by first introducing the world to Matthew McConaughey as party fiend David Wooderson. By showing us the truth in suburban, middle-class banality – heavily influenced by stoner culture – Kevin Smith was able to launch his career with this low-budget classic. In the first film of this series, we follow unemployed stoners Smokey and Craig for the duration of a day as they smoke their entire stash and have to figure out a plot to pay back the money to their dealer. It also became the genre’s archetype for stoner buddy films made over the past 10 years.

Review: ‘Disjointed’ Is One Buzzkill of a Pot Comedy

Even in a more choom-friendly America, it’d be a tough sell at CBS.The result is a mess of a comedy that doesn’t feel as if it belongs anywhere. Ruth runs her shop, Ruth’s Alternative Caring, with her strait-laced M.B.A. son, Travis. For the intoxicant, this kind of wacky family-work hybrid could have aired 25 years ago. It’s also raunchy without much sophistication and distractingly self-conscious. The best subplot involves the security guard, Carter, an Iraq veteran grappling with post-traumatic stress disorder. Back in the present, she shakes her head at how worked up she and the crowd got over what was, in retrospect, lousy pot.

While the downtown club brings in the younger, hipper and edgier comics, Comedy Works South generally brings in the slightly cleaner, nationally known acts. This 21,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility, which also includes a restaurant and a martini bar, is an upgrade on the downtown location, and the comedy theater holds nearly twice as many people. ‘Disjointed’ review: Kathy Bates stars in pot comedy

The writers also play with those conventions, such as incorporating commercial spoofs for pot-themed products, which is probably the cleverest recurring bit the show has to offer. The show veers back to more familiar terrain with the prickly relationship between Bates’ free spirit and her MBA son Travis, who has his own ongoing flirtation with a coworker. TV’s increasingly casual attitude toward pot can be seen in a number of reality shows devoted to the business of medicinal marijuana, as well as its use within premium series.
