NZ On Air: History of Kiwi comedy, Patrick Gower’s look at marijuana among the projects funded

A history of New Zealand comedy, a Stuff Circuit interactive documentary series and a two-part Patrick Gower investigation into marijuana are among the Kiwi factual projects which have received funding in the latest round of handouts from NZ On Air. The independent broadcast funding agency announced a $9m investment in 24 new projects on Monday, amounting to more than 7600 minutes of content. Among the most eye-catching were Funny As: The Story of New Zealand Comedy, a series chronicling what has made Kiwis laugh throughout the years, destined for TVNZ1, and Three’s Patrick Gower: The High Road. The latter will explore the opportunities for New Zealand if marijuana was legalised, with Gower looking at the overseas experience, exploring the pros and cons of legalising marijuana for recreational, as well as medicinal, use. MediaWorks chief content officer Andrew Szusterman said with marijuana use likely to be legalised here in the future they felt it was important for New Zealand society to explore how such a decision has impacted other communities.

For his own part, Newshub’s national correspondent Gower said while he always had his doubts that marijuana wasn’t good for anything more than people getting stoned, every day there seemed to be headline from somewhere in the world proving him wrong. Ironically, The High Road comes hot on the heels of another similarly themed two-part documentary In Pot Pursuit which screened on TVNZ earlier this month. It will be distributed on Stuff and will also screen on Māori Television. Prime will screen Recovery 29, a documentary about the potential re-entry to the Pike River Mine, while The Coconet. Tv’s Talune: Ship of Death will be aiming to enlighten younger generations about the story of a New Zealand ship that arrived in Samoa in 1918 carrying an influenza strain that wiped out a quarter of the Samoan population.

Newly funded lifestyle series include Māori Television’s Pio Terei-hosted Off the Grid and a six-part show following New Zealand NBA star Steven Adams’ Kiwi-based basketball camps, a TVNZ medical information series The Check Up and one on teenagers at a high school teen pregnancy unit, which will also air on the state broadcaster. Existing shows funded for another series include Anika Moa: Unleashed, Prime’s Making New Zealand, reality competition Design Junkies and long-running rural lifestyle series Country Calendar. NZ On Air chief executive Jane Wrightson says the 24 funded projects demonstrated the wealth and diversity of ideas of content creators.

Cannabis cruising: five weed-friendly places to get stoned in the Big Smoke

The good news is that this situation has a built-in solution: there are many lounges and cannabis-friendly businesses already operating that allow customers to consume weed. They do have some things in common, like ID-ing and prohibiting tobacco use, alcohol use and cannabis sales. The Hotbox has knowledgeable, friendly staff to answer any questions you may have and a range of events, including Nintendo competitions, live music and comedy shows. Owner and long-time cannabis activist Abi Roach, who spoke at the Municipal Licensing and Standards committee last month, isn’t nervous about the future – she believes councillors are actually beginning to come around on weed lounges. On October 2, Ward 20 Councillor Joe Cressy was able to push a motion through the Board of Health to re-open the issue of cannabis lounges, albeit through a back door.

People who want to learn more about cannabis concentrates and dabbing can do so here with the proper accessories. Owner Joanne Baker is adamant about putting comedy at the forefront of her business and keeps a fresh lineup of big names coming through her doors. Special rules Bring your own bud for the class offering; be quiet and respectful. Before students at this airy space get down to downward dog, they can take cannabis-infused tea or puff on cannabis using a top-of-the-line vaporizer that creates an environment with nearly no haze or smell. Students are asked to donate sativa or more uplifting strains of cannabis for a communal puff before class to help stimulate focus and energy.

Ganja Yoga student Antuanette-Gomez says she got hooked after her first class – but not to the cannabis she was already used to consuming. Owner Lu Pancini has been teaching yoga for 12 years and tells NOW she is proud of her family-run business, which also offers Thai Yoga Massage, Thai Massage School and Yoga School.

America’s marijuana policy isn’t funny. It’s racist.

When NBC’s Meet the Press over the weekend held a roundtable about the New York Times Editorial Board’s decision to endorse marijuana legalization, participants seemed to take the issue very lightly – regularly making jokes between a few serious policy points. The chuckles are typical in conversations about marijuana policy. Hillary Clinton got in some jokes about marijuana before answering a similar question at a CNN-hosted town hall in the spring. It’s easy to joke about marijuana policy when the idea of legalization feels more like a new freedom, which might be the case for whiter and wealthier populations. Poorer populations, marijuana policy is much closer to a civil rights issue.

Marijuana isn’t just a drug that they would like to be able to use and carry out in the open. Marijuana criminalization has historically been used to harass and arrest people in minority and poor communities at hugely disproportionate rates. A 2013 report from the American Civil Liberties Union found that, even though white and black people use pot at similar rates, black people are 3.7 times more likely to get arrested for marijuana possession. New York decriminalized marijuana in 1977, but as of 2012 had one of the highest arrest rates for pot possession. The problem: New York law allows arrests for marijuana that’s within public view.

Police officers in New York City regularly used this exception to arrest people, particularly minorities, by getting them to empty their pockets during stop-and-frisk searches and expose marijuana that would otherwise have remained hidden. Because for a large chunk of the US population, marijuana policy is simply no joking matter.

Adam Pally: Mindy Project Star Arrested for Marijuana & Cocaine Possession

Adam Pally was arrested for alleged marijuana and cocaine possession on Tuesday night, PEOPLE confirms. A spokesman for the New York Police Department confirmed to PEOPLE that The Mindy Project actor was standing in front of 308 W. 48th in New York on Tuesday evening when officers observed him smoking marijuana in public from an e-cigarette, as was first reported by TMZ. The officers placed him under arrest and conducted a search, during which they found Pally was also in possession of a small amount of cocaine. According to the spokesman, the 35-year-old actor and father of two was arrested at around 10:46 p.m. and was charged with two misdemeanors: criminal possession of a controlled substance and criminal possession of marijuana.

Pally, who plays Peter Prentice on Mindy, received a desk appearance ticket and was allowed to leave from the precinct after his arrest was processed, but he must return to court in June, according to the spokesman. The actor’s arrest comes just a day before Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday that The Mindy Project will return this September on Hulu for its sixth and final season, and the same day his new comedy Most Likely to Murder began filming. Pally is married to Daniella Liben and the couple has two kids. A rep for Pally did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.

Marijuana dispensary Hi Fidelity officially opened Saturday

Hi Fidelity, a new marijuana dispensary located next to Amoeba Music on Telegraph Avenue, officially opened Saturday. Restricting product sales to those made by the best practices is also very high on Hi Fidelity’s list of priorities. These include farming practices that are organic and dry-based, and recruiting producers who agree that cannabis is an essential part of life. Human civilization, according to Weinstein, has systematically kept marijuana from humans, even though cannabis might have helped multitudes of people in the past. In 2016, City Council approved three new cannabis dispensaries in order to meet growing recreational and medicinal demand.

Hi Fidelity is the first of the three to open, and Worthington and Mayor Jesse Arreguín said they consider it an important addition to the Berkeley community. Arreguín said the dispensary provides a foundation not only for increased business and vibrancy among the intersection, but also in regard to paying employees reasonable wages and supporting them by means of a labor union. According to a statement from United Food and Commercial Workers Local 648, or UFCW Local 648, Hi Fidelity’s main stakeholders, including Marc Weinstein, were the first to commit in writing to model labor standards. The statement described Amoeba Records as integral to the city of Berkeley, and a source of satisfactory jobs.

Ep. 93 – Comedy, Marijuana, Psychedelics and Alines with Adrienne Airhart

The Top Ten Reasons Marijuana Should Be Legal

The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and yet: marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually, cannabis is currently the largest cash crop in the United States, and marijuana is grown all over the planet. African-Americans account for approximately 13% of the population of the United States and about 13.5% of annual marijuana users blacks also account for 26% of all marijuana arrests. Recent studies have demonstrated that blacks and Hispanics account for the majority of marijuana possession arrests in New York City, primarily for smoking marijuana in public view. Law enforcement has failed to demonstrate that marijuana laws can be enforced fairly without regard to race; far too often minorities are arrested for marijuana use while white/non-Hispanic Americans face a much lower risk of arrest. A regulated, legal market in marijuana would reduce marijuana sales and use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market.

Canada and European countries have managed to support legal hemp cultivation without legalizing marijuana, but in the United States opposition to legal marijuana remains the biggest obstacle to development of industrial hemp as a valuable agricultural commodity. It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans; marijuana overdoses are nearly impossible, and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. Americans use marijuana because they choose to, and one of the reasons for that choice is their personal observation that the drug has a relatively low dependence liability and easy-to-manage side effects. Most marijuana users develop tolerance to many of marijuana’s side effects, and those who do not, choose to stop using the drug. Marijuana use is the result of informed consent in which individuals have decided that the benefits of use outweigh the risks, especially since, for most Americans, the greatest risk of using marijuana is the relatively low risk of arrest.

Marijuana users are determined to stand up to the injustice of marijuana probation and accomplish legalization, no matter how long or what it takes to succeed. Marijuana will be legalized because marijuana users will continue to fight for it until they succeed.

Oregon Medical & Recreational Marijuana Dispensaries

Oregon is home to rugged coastal beaches, densely canopied forests, ocean-side sand dunes, vast plains, a variety of mountain ranges, and a population of nearly four million. As the first state in the U.S. to decriminalize small amounts of marijuana, Oregon has remained a force of progress when it comes to marijuana reform for the last four decades. Sixteen years later, in 2014, Oregon joined Colorado and Washington in legalizing marijuana recreationally. The state allows cities and jurisdictions to ban marijuana cultivation and sales and, as of March 2017, 73 cities and 16 counties have prohibited licensed marijuana businesses.

Due to the slow creation of the licensing process for recreational dispensaries, lawmakers in Oregon created an emergency law that allowed medical dispensaries to sell marijuana recreationally beginning October 1st, 2015. Since the Oregon Department of Health oversees the medical marijuana program and the Oregon Liquor Control Commission is in charge of running the recreational program, licensed dispensaries will have to choose which focus they want – medical or recreational – once the rules governing recreational dispensaries have become law. The first recreational-only licensed dispensaries in Oregon opened doors October 1st, 2016, nearly two years from when the measure was passed. Medical patients may possess up to 24 ounces of usable marijuana at any time or the equivalent at any time. In comparison, recreational customers are limited to: One ounce of usable marijuana flower.

The state requires you to first complete an educational program available for free online, which includes key information about marijuana laws in Oregon, health, and a variety of other industry related topics. As long as marijuana remains a federally illegal substance, employers can still punish an employee – including firing them – for the use of marijuana on or off the job. Under no circumstance does the legalization of recreational marijuana or possessing a valid medical registry card allow an individual to be under the influence while at work.

Editorial: Correct call on marijuana

The decision isn’t without controversy, but city council was wise to ban the use of marijuana in public places. When the federal government legalizes cannabis later this summer, Calgarians won’t be able to smoke, vape or eat products made with the substance in public spaces, unless they’re a medical marijuana user. That’s led critics of the decision to complain that people who live in multi-family dwellings may not be able to use the drug. Evan Woolley said when the restriction was being discussed by council. Council is simply treating marijuana like we treat tobacco and liquor.

Presumably, the people who won’t be able to smoke pot in their units, are already prevented from lighting up a cigarette indoors – just as they’re prevented from doing so in parks and other public areas. The ban on using marijuana in public is also justified because of its distinct, skunky smell. Public consumption is prohibited in all nine American states where cannabis is legal, including Colorado, California and Nevada. City council has instructed staff to explore the creation of designated cannabis smoking areas, so there’s still the possibility Calgarians who can’t use the drug indoors will have a place to light up in the future. Medical officer of health Dr.

Brent Friesen made a good point when he said the bylaw should not stigmatize users, but it shouldn’t normalize marijuana use either. The doctor said it is essential not to create an environment where young people see adults smoking and vaping marijuana, thinking that it is the customary thing to do. Council made the right call in banning pot smoking in public.

NY Times find that marijuana arrests are heavily tilted toward blacks, Latinos

Even though marijuana is slowly being decriminalized around the country, in New York City, it’s still illegal and people are still getting arrested and booked by the dozen. More often than not, the people getting locked up tend to be Black and brown. The New York Times has found that while there have been changes in policy on weed, the easiest way to be arrested for marijuana possession is to be either Black or Latino. While this may not be shocking to generations of black and brown people, the number found by The Times bear out a stark reality. It is especially glaring when you look at how the arrest rates for marijuana possession differs depending on the section of New York City.

In Queens, the marijuana arrest rate is more than 10 times as high in the precinct covering Queens Village as it is in precinct that serves Forest Hills. Queens Village just over half black, while Forest Hills has a tiny portion of black residents. In Manhattan, Black people were arrested at 15 times the rate of white people. In Brooklyn, officers in Canarsie, which is 85 percent Black, arrested people at a rate more than four times as high as in the precinct that includes Greenpoint-4 percent Black-despite residents calling to complain about marijuana at the same rate, police data show. Black neighborhoods traditionally have more officers, even as crime in New York City has gone down.

What makes the marijuana arrests and disparities so troubling is that police are legally able to stop and search a person spotted smoking marijuana and check for open warrants, which is speculated to be the real reason for these arrests.

Arkansas judge blocks medical marijuana dispensaries in the state

After medical marijuana was approved in the state of Arkansas in early-2017 a judge struck down the idea of letting the businesses sell the plant which grows in the ground naturally. Pulaski County Circuit Judge Wendell Griffen last month ruled that the state’s licensing process for the cultivation facilities violated a 2016 voter-approved constitutional amendment legalizing marijuana for patients with certain medical conditions. To boot, the state made it a stiffer penalty for those who get caught with the plant who do not have a license for medical, making the entire process a sham to enslave and further criminalize.

Urban Dictionary: 420

The term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation. So there ya go, someone’s parents out there invented the term 4/20. And remember this: There are NOT 420 chemicals in Weed.

Goes up or down depending on what you’re smoking.

Marijuana odor from cultivation center continues to seep into north Boulder

The same area of north Boulder that one year ago was the site of some neighborhood frustration over marijuana odor is now host to a near repeat of that drama. This cultivation center is located in the same industrial building, at 4727 Broadway, where the Dandelion Grow was fined last fall. Boulder Botanics does not have the same history with the city, and paid off its fine quickly, according to records. The issue of pot odor persists many neighbors have said. It’s unclear, what Boulder Botanics has done or will do to mitigate the apparent concern. On the phone Friday, a woman who identified herself as the manager of Boulder Botanics’ dispensary, which is located on 30th Street, said she did not know where the dispensary’s grow operation is based. Asked whether the business is in touch with the city about the matter of marijuana odor leaking into the neighborhood, the woman on the phone said she had to go assist customers, and that she was not interested in following up with the Camera on the topic of odor. Boulder’s marijuana regulations state that no odor should be detectable from outside of a pot business. The city law that requires businesses to fully contain odor is, like many of Boulder’s marijuana regulations, tougher than Boulder County’s law on the matter. The recent fine at Boulder Botanics’ grow was the first odor violation in the city since last year’s Dandelion Grow episode.
