Uptown! plans spectacular New Year’s celebration

Co-chairs, and husband and wife team, Sandy Riper, of Sunset Hills Jewelers, and lawyer and board member, Joe Riper, have been planning the 2018 celebration to support Uptown! since the 2017 version ended. Guests will enjoy dinner from John Serock Catering, drinks, dancing on the stage to the band New Street Heat, entertainment, a raffle and a Broadway in the Borough performance by RTC, the Resident Theatre Company. The 327-seat non-profit theater opened its doors to coincide with the gala on New Year’s Eve 2016-17. This is the third year the event has been held at the theater and a tradition since plans for showplace commenced about a decade ago.

For the first year at the theater it was a black tie event and this year patrons of the arts will wear cocktail attire. Sandy and Joe Riper have been with the theater since the planning stages. The celebration helps maintain programs, preserve the former National Guard Armory, an historic building, keep ticket prices in check and helps to pay staff. Angela Scully, executive director, said the annual event is the roots of support and helped launch the theater. The theater is home to seven resident companies, works with youth and regularly sells out Jazz and Better than Bacon Improv comedy shows.

Ticket sales begin for Uptown! members on August 31.

Thursday: Hili dialogue « Why Evolution Is True

On August 2, 1610, Henry Hudson, during his futile search for the Northwest Passage, stumbled onto what is now called Hudson’s Bay. July 4, regarded by many Americans as the day the Declaration was signed, was actually when it was ratified by Congress. On this day in 1790, the first official U.S. census was conducted. At that time the population was recorded as 3,929,326.

On this day in 1934, Adolf Hitler became Führer of Germany after President von Hindenburg died. A black day for stoners: on August 2, 1937, the Marihuana Tax Act of 1937 was passed, making marijuana and all its products illegal. It was on this day in 1939 that Albert Einstein and Leo Szilard wrote their famous letter to Franklin Roosevelt, urging him to start developing a nuclear weapon. It was on August 2, 1943 that the the motor torpedo boat PT-109 was sunk by a Japanese destroyer, cutting it in half and killing one man. The men were rescued after 6 days on the island and Kennedy became a war hero, helping get him elected as President two decades down the line.

Finally, on this day in 1990, Iraq invaded Kuwait, precipitating the Gulf War. Hili seems sagacious-in her own way! Another tweet from First Amendment lawyer Marc Randazza; read the piece!
