Film Review: A good cast can’t save contrived marijuana flick ‘Gringo’

Oyelowo plays Harold, a Nigerian immigrant and middle manager for a pharma company run by his friend Richard. His bosses are mass producing a marijuana pill so that they’ll be ready to conquer the market when it’s legalized in the U.S., but unbeknownst to him they’re sustaining their business on illegal sales in Mexico facilitated by a local drug lord. We know Harold’s life is sad because we’re introduced to him in the middle of a bitter Chicago winter. He takes his pup out in the freezing cold in the morning and then goes to meet with his accountant, who informs Harold that his wife, Bonnie is digging them into massive debt with her costly and unsuccessful interior design business. When Harold suggests that perhaps Bonnie not rent out expensive office space while she’s still launching the business and has only one client, she scoffs and it’s the end of the discussion.

Elaine, Richard and Harold go off to Mexico to cut off the illegal arm of their business, which Harold knows nothing about. None of them speak Spanish, even Harold, who is supposed to be the main liaison there. Naturally, the drug lord they’re in business with, the Black Panther, is not ready to give up this weed pill supply and sets off to kidnap Harold. Every character we meet there, whether it’s the office manager with a half dozen kids, the sleazy hotel managers, the bartender, etc. It never really pays off or connects in any meaningful way, other than the fact that they happen to run into Harold a lot.

There’s a lot of gun violence, casual racism, and hatefulness in general, especially toward women. Oyelowo is the one who comes off without a scratch and actually has some quite amusing moments.

Toronto’s Marijuana Infused Comedy Scene

The center of Canada’s comedy universe is home to a series of weekly rooms where audience members can openly smoke marijuana while enjoying some of the best standup the city has to offer. Third Klass Thursdays along with Weedy Wednesdays and Stoner Sundays are three of the biggest weekly standup shows in Toronto, vapor lounge or not and all three happen at Vapor Central on Yonge Street. Despite hosting three of the biggest weekly shows in the city, Chris won’t take credit for creating the weed-infused comedy circuit. Joey aka Puff Mama is a former comedy club employee at the now defunct Comedy Wood in Toronto. She started producing her own shows once the club shut down.

The Underground Comedy Club quickly became a popular stop for touring pros coming to Toronto. Local comedian Rob Mailloux has performed on and produced several shows at Underground. With consistently sold out rooms featuring touring pros and stacked lineups of local acts, the Vapor Lounge series of shows are some of the strongest and most successful in the city. It’s a community of shows that’s thriving in the heavily saturated Toronto comedy scene. Sold out rooms full of comedy fans openly smoking weed, carefree.

There are a few rules that everyone must follow at the shows. Whether visiting Toronto as a comedian, comedy fan, marijuana enthusiast or curious cat, the Vapor Lounge series of shows are worth checking out.

Remembering Miloš Forman, The First Marijuana Comedy Director

You may never have heard of Miloš Forman, but you should have. At least if you think movies about weed are funny, you should have heard of him. Miloš Forman did win two Academy Awards for directing two amazing films, Amadeus and One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Next of course starring Jack Nicholson. The movie you may never have heard of and may become a quick favorite is Taking Off from 1971. Mr.

Forman passed away last week at the age of 86. In his movie Taking Off, rich New Yorkers just do not know what to do about their out of control children that are regular potheads. They seek out guidance from a support group led by Vincent Schiavelli to discover how to manage their young stoners. They are advised by their support group to learn and understand what could be drawing their teenagers to marijuana by indulging in a smoke session themselves. Joints are passed around the group that do not seem entirely turned off by the idea and hilarity ensues.

On top of winning two Academy Awards, Miloš Forman won the Grand Prix award at the 1971 Cannes Film Festival for Taking Off. The Grand Prix award virtually makes Taking Off to most acclaimed stoner movie of all time. It makes movies like Pineapple Express make a lot of sense even though they may never had planned on it making sense in the first place.
