‘Silicon Valley’ and the Return of Stoner Television

With experience in both British and American network and cable television, Shapeero has a unique perspective on the shifting attitudes toward marijuana in media. Critics of on screen marijuana use like the Parents Television Council have maintained that normalization of drug use in media sends the wrong message and perpetuates more usage. “I don’t think television is doing anything to be the driving force of that. People are out there in the world.” Even on set, he says filming scenes with a stoned character or marijuana doesn’t require any specific direction only, “Actors will sometimes ask ‘How stoned do you want me to go?’ But I don’t give them any coaching. People bring their own experiences to the performance and marijuana affects everyone differently.” Gillian Jacobs’s character Britta Perry on Community is one of the few open marijuana users on network television. “Dan [Harmon] is very clever at representing the culture in another way and making everybody behave as if was marijuana or some other drug. Those episodes are really fun to work on because you have that sort of freedom back. You’ve replaced the illegal thing that we’re not allowed to talk about or show and now you can tell a story.” Writing for The Atlantic in 2013, Scott Meslow examined the rehabilitation of televised marijuana usage citing mid-90s programs such as Roseanne, Home Improvement, and That ’70s Show as proof the medium was starting to treat the issue with less “Demonization” and more “New frankness.” Acceptability opened up the potential of telling marijuana stories, but criminal justice efforts made visual representations of the drug’s use confront the negative stigma surrounding cannabis. In the twin episodes “Moon Over Point Place” and “Reefer Madness,” not only does the character purchase marijuana off screen and to fit in, but it is contained in a nondescript paper bag like a truck stop porno mag and a police officer appears almost immediately. The trope appeared on 1970s television screens in Barney Miller’s “You Dirty Rat” and Sanford & Son’s “Fred’s Treasure Garden.” The 1980s saw the trope appear in the Laverne and Shirley episode “I Do, I Do,” the 1982 episode of Taxi “The Road Not Taken,” and even as recently as the 2009 episode of Everybody Hates Chris, “Everybody Hates Lasagna.” In 2012, the trope appeared on the 2 Broke Girls episode “…And the High Holidays” when a bag of weed accidentally falls into a batch of cupcakes. Two recent episodes of Raising Hope and Growing Up Fisher featured marijuana usage. Tommy Chong guest starred, as Cloris Leachman’s boyfriend, on the Raising Hope marijuana episode and Leachman uses her age to legitimize her right to smoke. In the 1997 episode “The Canine Mutiny,” marijuana is discovered on a blind character in front of the police. By virtue of their ubiquity, most of the negative associations with marijuana use come from reality television programming like Cops. Other marijuana coverage in reality television has also focused on law enforcement efforts. When asked if legalization would affect cannabis in television, Tristram Shapeero says, “Just because it becomes legal, they won’t ever replace what marijuana does when we’re trying to use it in comedy. Alcohol is legal, but we still use it to great effect because it alters the mind.” Shapeero does point out that, “It may not have the rebellious edge it does now.”

Netflix Are Making A New Weed Comedy Called Disjointed

SHARE. There shall be a way to chill, and it shall be Netflix, and it is good! The watch-when-you-want mogul pops out more projects than Detroit and their latest is going to be all about weed. If you love cannabis comedy, then you need to ‘stay tuned’ for the upcoming series, Disjointed. The Big Bang Theory’s Chuck Lorre and the Daily Show’s David Javerbaum co-wrote the show, putting their talent with script writing together. In searching for a home for the cannabis-themed comedy, the duo initially set their sights on various networks before deciding on making a Netflix exclusive. While the subject of everyday cannabis might seem a little racy for regular network television, Netflix has shown that it can tackle tough subject matter with style and, dare I say, balls. Netflix features original series that have begun to rival the followings of major networks. Disjointed makes the third multi-cam series for the company, after Fuller House and The Ranch. Other Netflix original greats include Orange is the New Black, House of Cards, Narcos, and Bloodline, to name a few. With an original cannabis series added to their impressive collection of documentaries and much-loved movies about the herb, Netflix poses to make on-demand internet streaming media history. From the days of Cheech & Chong, stoner comedy had dug itself a deep hole. Shows such as Weeds have helped to mainstream the image of marijuana into everyday culture if not yet complete acceptance. Netflix placed the order for 20 episodes of Disjointed, and if the excitement over the show is in any way telling of its potential success, we can expect to see many more than that. As for when the show will actually air, we will have to wait and see. What Netflix shows are you addicted to? Tell us on social media or in the comments below.

Kayvan Khalatbari rolls weed, pizza and comedy into Denver empire The Denver Post

Kayvan Khalatbari generally appears calm, happy and confident, whether he’s on stage for a marijuana policy speech, in the conference room of his Denver Relief pot business, handing out coupons after a comedy show, or seated in one of his Sexy Pizza shops – where the free-pie coupons transform into food. On top of that, Khalatbari is also occasionally That Guy in the Chicken Suit, harshly mocking Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper over his stances on legalized marijuana as well as a philanthropist who sits on nonprofit boards and donates his time and money to kids. “I’m glad I’ve done a lot of odd jobs,” Khalatbari said from his Denver Relief office, dressed in his standard black polo shirt bearing the company logo. “There are a million ways to give back and be creative and synergize your business,” said Khalatbari, who in addition to co-founding Denver Relief’s Green Team volunteer group will donate about $50,000 this year to sponsor local comedy podcasts and live showcases – more than double what he gave in 2013. “None of us had made pizza or run a restaurant before,” Khalatbari said of the joint, a former Pizza Vera outlet on Capitol Hill. Khalatbari worked behind the counter at Sexy Pizza for the better part of the year, consistently losing money on his $40,000 personal investment. Early on New Year’s Day in 2009, while coming down from a psychedelic mushroom trip, Khalatbari suggested to some of his Sexy Pizza cohorts that they start a medical-marijuana dispensary. It creates a tight schedule for the early-to-rise Khalatbari, leaving little time for a personal life or romantic relationships – especially since Sexy Pizza now has two more locations. The combined stores are on track to earn about $2.5 million this year, which allows Khalatbari to spend money sponsoring a dozen-plus Denver comedy shows such as “Too Much Fun,” “Propaganda!” and the High Plains Comedy Fest. Later this month, Khalatbari will launch an ambitious Sexpot Comedy website, which seeks to unite the disparate strands of Front Range funny – similar to what the Nerdist network has done in Los Angeles – while also marketing Khalatbari’s cannabis and pizza products to a coveted demographic of young, hip culture hounds. Khalatbari doesn’t expect a traditional financial return from the thousands he devotes to sponsoring local stand-up shows and culture podcasts each month. “Every 30 days I’m spending probably a third of what I would on print advertising and getting much more from it because these are doing weekly and monthly shows,” said Khalatbari, who credits the Grawlix comedy troupe for laying the groundwork for Denver’s nationally renowned stand-up scene. Changing perceptions of his industry – whatever it may be at the time – and helping kids by volunteering for Big Brother programs or serving on boards like the Colorado Youth Symphony Orchestra is “a selfish act,” Khalatbari claims. “I’m internally frustrated with myself all the time,” said Khalatbari, whose work ethic helps balance a self-described “Depressed” state.

How TV Fell in Love With Marijuana

The increasingly normalized depiction of marijuana use on television, taken in conjunction with the increase in American marijuana users, raises a chicken-or-the-egg question: Was TV making Americans more tolerant of marijuana use? Or was the increase in American marijuana users encouraging TV to depict the drug less negatively? The Parents Television Council, a media watchdog group, argues the former-and they’re not happy about it. In a 2010 FOX News debate with marijuana legalization advocate Allen St. Pierre, Melissa Henson, the Director of Communications and Public Education for the PTC, argued that TV shows which feature marijuana users “Communicate the idea that it’s not only acceptable behavior, but normal behavior.” TV series like The Simpsons, South Park, and Family Guy have built entire episodes around marijuana legalization, with Family Guy’s “420” offering its own annoyingly catchy song-“A Bag of Weed”-as a counterpoint to the “Wonderful Ways to Say No” of Cartoon All-Stars to the Rescue! Age is a factor: A 2010 ABC study found that 81 percent of Americans support the legalization of medicinal marijuana, while the number drops to 23 percent for Americans aged 65 and older. As American cultural attitudes continue to shape-and be shaped by-depictions of marijuana, it’s hard to imagine that TV will ever go back.

Martha Stewart smoked weed with Snoop Dogg at Bieber roast, Jeff Ross says

Martha Stewart let comedian Jeff Ross shotgun marijuana smoke, courtesy of Snoop Dogg, into her mouth behind the scenes at the Comedy Central Roast of Justin Bieber, the comedian told Conan O’Brien Tuesday. “And Snoop pulled out his – whatever you smoke stuff out of – and me and Martha Stewart got a little stoned,” he added. 73, didn’t actually smoke the weed directly, Mr. Ross said. Ms. Stewart, who had Snoop bake brownies on her show over a decade ago and invited him back to make mashed potatoes in 2008, gave a shoutout to her longtime friend during the roast, which aired March 30. “One of the highest-rated episodes on my show, ‘Martha Stewart Living,’ was when Snoop and I made brownies together. I’ve used his recipe ever since. As a matter of fact, I ate three of them right before they called and asked me to do this roast.”

Ngaio Bealum, a cannabis comedian from Sacramento, reflects on the passage of Proposition 64 in California

During a recent lunch hour at midtown’s Hook & Ladder, exactly one week after Proposition 64 was passed by California voters, Sacramento’s leading cannabis celebrity reached into the pocket of his sports coat, pulled out a small baggie filled with Red Diesel marijuana buds, and slapped it defiantly on the table. 64, which legalized the recreational use of marijuana in California, despite some push back within the cannabis community. Bealum, a cannabis activist since 1990, was sold on the decriminalization aspects of Prop. “You don’t know how relaxing it is as a cannabis user that you can be driving in your car – not smoking weed in your car – and not be sweated over, especially as a person of color,” Bealum said. Though marijuana is now decriminalized in 29 states and Washington, D.C., cannabis remains illegal under federal law.

Joe Rogan UFC Marijuana DMT Comedy Videos

The reason we’re highlighting on BigBudsMag.com is that Joe Rogan so effectively explains why marijuana is a portal to enlightened consciousness, and why there’s a war against it. Cannabis is associated with hippies, anti-war protestors people whose use of marijuana helps them see through society’s lies, Rogan explains. The Joe Rogan UFC persona makes sense if you put it with the Joe Rogan Fear Factor, martial artist, and animal hunter personas. When you listen to his Joe Rogan Experience podcast, you recognize the spiritual effects psychedelics have had on him, and you wonder if Joe Rogan UFC guy might by now have moved past violence after he had all those DMT and marijuana visions. You hear the enlightenment when Rogan talks about humans as crazed monkeys, and asks us to move up to be “Higher primates” instead. Rogan’s stand-up comedy is underrated and it’s full of hilarious, insightful references to marijuana.

Highly Hilarious: Top 10 Cannabis Comedians

One of the official ‘Pot Comics’ working today and the Bongmeister behind the landmark marijuana documentary, ‘Super High Me’ and the theatre piece, The Marijuana-Logues, Doug works all over the world now. “A lot of good has come from drugs. I think ‘Penny Lane’ is worth 10 dead kids. Dark Side of the Moon is worth 100 dead kids. Because a lot of kids wouldn’t even be born if it weren’t for that album, so it evens out.” Speaking of political comics, I wouldn’t call Bill Maher a “Pot Comic,” even though he’s probably been more vocal than any other performer this side of Tommy Chong when it comes to the marijuana question as national issue. What can you say about George Carlin? The first real significant pot comic that brought home the message to the masses that maybe, just maybe, drugs can be funny. For many of us, something happened to us, after Mr. Carlin’s transitioned from button-down comic of the Eisenhower era to long-hair free-form artist that we grew to know and love in the late Sixties or early Seventies.

Comedy and tragedy: When the GOP debate turned to marijuana

“There is at least one prominent example on the stage of someone who says they smoked pot in high school, and yet the people going to – to jail for this are poor people, often African-Americans and often Hispanics, and yet the rich kids who use drugs aren’t.” “So, 40 years ago, I smoked marijuana, and I admit it. I’m sure that other people might have done it and may not want to say it in front of 25 million people. My mom’s not happy that I just did.” “People’s families are – are being torn apart. It is appropriate for the government to play a consistent role to be able to provide more treatment, more prevention – we’re the state that has the most drug courts across every circuit in – in – in Florida, there are drug courts to give people a second chance.” “I agree with Senator Paul. I agree with states’ rights. But we are misleading young people when we tell them that marijuana is just like having a beer. It’s not. And the marijuana that kids are smoking today is not the same as the marijuana that Jeb Bush smoked 40 years ago.” “We do – sorry, Barbara. We do need – we do need criminal justice reform. We have the highest incarceration rates in the world. Two-thirds of the people in our prisons are there for non-violent offenses, mostly drug related. It’s clearly not working.”

An Interview with TJ Miller About His Latest Gig, the First Openly Cannabis-Themed Comedy Tour

He’s the guy from Silicon Valley and Yogi Bear 3D. The Leafly Cannabis Comedy tour kicks off in Seattle at the Crocodile on January 2, with an opening act by Emmett Montgomery. I understand this is “The world’s first-ever cannabis comedy tour”? What makes it a cannabis comedy tour? Obviously comedians smoke a lot of weed, and weed makes you think things are funny, but. That’s the new thing to talk about! No one’s talkin’ about that on the cannabis tour! That’s the way I’m going to be different. So that’s the thing, I don’t talk about weed so much as I perform material that’s very fun to watch high. You gotta take an extra beat waiting for them to be like, “Ohhhh yeahhh!” Sometimes you get that, but other times people are high and the more bizarre I get, the more I riff, the more they’re into it.

Netflix Orders Chuck Lorre and Kathy Bates Pot Comedy

On Wednesday, the streaming giant ordered to series Disjointed, a new comedy from The Big Bang Theory’s Chuck Lorre set at an L.A.-based pot dispensary. The series, which was originally shopped around to the networks before landing at Netflix, is a multi-camera comedy co-written by Lorre and David Javerbaum. In addition to Bates’ pot-shop owner, the workplace comedy will feature the shop’s three budtenders, Bates’ character’s 20-something-year-old son and the shop’s security guard. Netflix points out that all characters will be “More or less constantly high.” Disjointed is Netflix’s third multi-cam series, the first two being the Ashton Kutcher-led series The Ranch and the wildly successful Fuller House.

Judge Doobie: on the set of The High Court with Doug Benson

When visiting the set of the new Comedy Central series The High Court with Doug Benson – a parody of daytime courtroom shows such as Judge Judy – the thing that stood out was the ventilation system designed to filter out smoke. Benson, a standup comic best known for his podcast Getting Doug with High and the documentary Super High Me, is the drug-fueled mind behind the new series. Plus, as Benson puts it, “Sound stages have very high ceilings, so the smoke would just float up, up and away”. Each of the 20 first season episodes of the High Court is a scant 15 minutes long, making it feel more like a deep cut Adult Swim show than the standard Comedy Central fare. The High Court with Doug Benson starts at midnight tonight ET on Comedy Central.

Marijuana Philosophies + Sock comedy + bloopers

Sketches a few of us hammered out as part of Classic TV, we had 36 hours to write film and edit as many as possible, these are some of the funnier ones.

Here’s the not-so-well-kept secret shared amongst all filmmakers dabbling in the “Stoner comedy” genre: The movies themselves don’t really need to be any good. That’s not to say that all of the funniest stoner comedies are actually trash when evaluated while sober; as you’re about to see, several of the films on our following countdown of The 25 Best Stoner Comedies Of All Time are legitimately good films. Hitting theaters today is a Mary Jane flick that’s on the more positive end of the critical spectrum: A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas, the third pot-heavy adventure starring everyone’s favorite racially diverse, and positively hemmed, antiheroes. Much funnier than its mediocre predecessor, 2008’s Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay, the fellas’ Yuletide romp is the best stoner comedy in years, earning its place amongst the greatest sticky icky pics. To see the movies that it just falls short of blow through the smoke and peep what’s next.

Watch John Oliver Blaze Through the Problems with Marijuana Legalization :: Comedy :: Video :: John Oliver :: Paste

The issue of marijuana is like Mark Wahlberg being seen as a serious actor. That’s part of the central thesis of John Oliver’s latest piece on marijuana legalization; it’s something we’ve all grown to accept, but is still fraught with problems. For legalization, it’s a matter of new state laws about weed use being in serious conflict with existing federal laws about everything from shipping to paying employees of legal dispensaries, to individuals with disabilities being able to use marijuana. As Oliver points out in his piece, “Golf in human form” has a major problem with pot. Oliver shows that such a fervent anti-weed agenda from the nation’s “Top cop” places these new laws, such as the one California passed in November 2016, in serious limbo and has more than a few people scratching their heads.

High Maintenance Trailer: Watch the Trailer for HBO’s New Comedy

“There’s infinitely more tonal and aesthetic variety in these mostly-funny-but-not-always comedies than in any comparable list of dramas you could put together,” as Matt Zoller Seitz wrote in New York Magazine. Louis CK, the most important man in comedy today, released his new show as a surprise on his own website. A show can start out as a webseries on Vemeo then become a full-fleged HBO series, as High Maintenance did. The show, which follows pot deliveryman in New York, will make its HBO debut this fall. Having debuted in 2012, the show has run for six three-episode seasons, which will all be available on HBO Now and HBO Go.In the first trailer for the new season on HBO, it looks like High Maintenance creators Katja Blichfeld and Ben Sinclair have lost none of their fleeting, stoner charm in the movie to a premium network.

Pot legalization baked into this year’s Sketchfest comedy

SF Sketchfest is back with the keyed-up fanaticism of a major comic book convention, only beefed up to last half a month and dedicated to comedy instead. The celebration spans 17 days in January, with a seemingly unending bill of performances, film screenings, podcast recordings, game shows, tributes and even debates to attend. Returning Jan. 12-29 in venues throughout San Francisco, the 2017 festival lineup promises more than 200 events featuring some of comedy’s most distinguished performers, including a live stage reading with sketch comedy troupe the Kids in the Hall, a 20th anniversary reunion of the cast and creators of the hit animated television show “King of the Hill,” and a tribute to black comedy vanguards Robert Townsend and Keenen Ivory Wayans. This year’s Sketchfest will be the first held under California’s new legal marijuana laws, allowing San Francisco to finally embrace two core parts of the city’s identity – comedy and cannabis. Pot has played a major role in modern comedy, even defining its own culture through acts like Cheech & Chong and Dave Chappelle, and with cult classic movies like “Half Baked,” “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle” and “Kentucky Fried Movie.” Patton Oswalt, who is scheduled to appear at a Sketchfest event for children called Story Pirates, is a comedian who used to bring up the topic of pot in his stand-up comedy, although he hasn’t smoked for about 20 years now.

Netflix Orders Marijuana Comedy Series Starring Kathy Bates

The excellent Kathy Bates will take the lead role as the store owner, managing a group of constantly high employees -undoubtedly the source for ensuing dope centrist humor. Lorre has found previous success working on various sitcoms, writing several episodes of Roseanne in the early 1990s and cycling through various series before ending up at the helm of the hugely popular Big Bang Theory. The network’s open minded attitude towards traditionally controversial subject matter should make it a great fit for a weed orientated show, allowing Lorre more freedom to explore this potentially hilarious context than his usual home on CBS. It should be fun to see Bates take on a lead role in a sitcom and spread her comedic wings within this role as a marijuana matriarch. With Bates on board and the proven comedic expertise from its showrunners, this series has the potential to be something special. With luck, Lorre will be able to land some equally good talent to play the other regulars at Bates’ dispensary, and it will be interesting to see how the showrunner handles the move to a streaming platform like Netflix.

Weed-themed game show lands in Wilmington

Philadelphia-based marijuana-themed game show “Weeding Out the Stoned” is coming to Wilmington this weekend. “We had a show Wednesday and it was the second time they got it right out of like 20 or 25 shows.” The other is the 10 p.m. “Eat Your Beats” game show, which features comedians competing in food-themed classic hip-hop-infused rap battles. New shows like MTV’s “Mary + Jane” and web series-turned-HBO show “High Maintenance,” along with Viceland’s “Weediquette” and “Bong Appétit,” will soon be joined by “Super High Me” comedian Doug Benson’s “The High Court” on Comedy Central. It was in November when they both were booked for a comedy show being held at Bootless Stageworks that they, along with New Castle-based comedian and show booker Brandon Jackson, realized the space was big enough for their concept shows.

Exclusive: Tommy Chong Talks New Comedy Tour, His Marijuana Motto & More – High Times

When cannabis icons are brought up, it’s hard not to think of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong. We sat down with one half of the legendary duo, Tommy Chong, to discuss his history with cannabis, writing jokes about it and working with Cheech after all these years. HIGH TIMES: What’s it like working with Cheech after all these years?Tommy Chong: I met Cheech in Canada, but I didn’t really appreciate the fact that he was Mexican until we got to L.A. There’s one thing about Los Angeles, you can’t make it in this town without a Mexican connection. Here’s my motto, it’s not how little you toke, it’s how much you toke it. There’s been times when I’m in the basement with my bongs, and I’ll take a toke, then a half hour later, I’ll take another toke and then maybe another toke.

Marijuana comedy club creating a ‘buzz’ in Brampton

He faced “a few challenges” opening a cannabis lounge in Brampton. “Not surprisingly, even the City of Brampton tried their best to have me go away quietly.,” Lafferre said in an email. Peel police had a different take on the issue when asked by The Guardian if that was the official position on the lounge. Police responded by saying possession and/or consumption of marijuana without a medicinal use licence is still a criminal offence and “Will be investigated by Peel Regional Police accordingly.” “Peel Regional Police does not condone or endorse any establishment that allows the illegal possession and/or consumption of a controlled substance,” police said in a statement to The Guardian.

‘Budding Prospects’, Amazon’s New Weed Comedy Set In Northern California, Premieres Pilot: SFist

One of the new shows in Amazon’s pilot season is Budding Prospects, based on the 1990 novel of the same name by TC Boyle, and it centers on three guys from San Francisco who head north to grow marijuana in the early 1980’s. The book was mentioned by several commenters when SFist published this list of great SF-set novels two years back, and it’s one of several shows Amazon is premiering, with the pilot available for viewing right now on Amazon Prime. In 1983, three hapless guys from San Francisco are lured from their sex and drugs lifestyle to the countryside to grow marijuana. They find themselves stuck in a run-down cabin in the middle of nowhere, with harsh and unfriendly growing conditions, nosy neighbors, dangerous locals, and menacing law enforcement. They haven’t reckoned on nosy Northern California-style neighbors, torrential rain, demands of the flesh, and Felix’s improbable new love, a wayward sculptress on whose behalf he undertakes a one-man vendetta against a drug-busting state trooper named Jerpbak.

New marijuana workplace web comedy series filming in DC

WASHINGTON – It has been just over a year since D.C. voters approved Initiative 71, which made it legal to possess and cultivate marijuana with some limitations. What do you get when you mix a woman with a film and media background and a man who has worked for years as a consultant for medical marijuana cultivation centers? One young duo hopes the answer is a smoking hot new fictional comedy series. Washington D.C. has been the focus of plenty of hit shows, but one local couple said it is high time for a new kind of series – one focused on D.C.’s marijuana industry. “There are a lot of TV shows made about D.C., but they aren’t being made about the part of D.C. that most local residents are experiencing and they are not being made by people who live here,” said writer, director and co-creator Amy Tasillo. They have been working on the pilot at the Mess Hall in Northeast D.C. They have turned a commercial kitchen space into a fictional marijuana cultivation center.

New Indie Stoner Comedy Giving Out Free Weed to Try and Get Seen| Heat Street

New indie comedy One Week and a Day, which opens tomorrow, is a stoner shiva tragicomedy about Eyal, a father who responds to his twentysomething son’s death by stealing his bag of medical marijuana and developing a passion for air guitar. Anxious to make One Week and a Day pop out of the movie calendar and not sink without trace, its distributor Oscilloscope Laboratories has come up with a new strategy: give out free weed to their social media followers in a competition to attract attention to the film. “In an Instagram post headlined ‘FREE WEED’, Oscilloscope wrote:”We’re giving away pot!Do you have cataracts? Sleep apnea? Just like to get blitzed? It’s worth noting that most of those who have signed up to get the weed live in Seattle or California. Doesn’t look like giving out free pot will result in One Week and a Day beating Guardians of the Galaxy 2 at the box office just yet.
